Trade Ideas?

I know a lot of fans have their own little imaginary trades they'd try to make if they were made Mavs GM for a day, and I'm no different. I just wanted to start a diary where us Mavs fans could post our (probably idiotic) trade ideas and then mock each other for how dumb our trade ideas are:)

(And, by the way, if you want to suggest a trade, please use the realgm trade checker found here to make sure it works under the cap.)

I'll get things started: I was perusing the net after the lottery when I ran across someone suggesting the following Mavs-Hawks swap:

-F Marvin Williams
-PG Tyron Lue
-#11th overall draft pick, '07 Draft

for

-PG Devin Harris
-G/F Greg Buckner
-PF Pops Mensa-Bonsu

First of all, this is a completely unsubstantiated rumor. I got the idea from a message board, not from some NBA reporter, so it's not really even a real rumor.

But it does work under the cap, and it would make some sense for both teams. It would finally give Atlanta a good, young PG to run the team, and it would allow Atlanta to take a big man with the #3 pick and not have to worry about over drafting a guy like Conley based on need.

I'm not sure they'd be willing to give up on a guy they were so high on, but they have a glut of SF's, so they could presumably afford give up a guy like Williams to plug that gigantic hole at the point. And Devin Harris is likely the only young PG available with the potential to be an elite guy.

Assuming Atlanta called you and offered to do this deal, would you accept it?

It would give us a young potential star to pair with Josh on the wing. Josh can defend opposing team's two guards, and he and Marvin would make a formidable swingman combo.

But Marvin is a bit of a risk, as he may be two or three years away from being able to help a championship caliber team.

I think I'd pull the trigger on this deal.

Depends
Depends on who the 11th pick turned out to be.  I might consider that deal on draft day if someone I really liked started to slide.

As I suggested in another thread Buckner + Terry for Randolph is an intriguing idea.  That makes the back court a little thin but it does give the Mavs a low post presence they lack.

Randolph for Terrt+Buckner
Where does Randolph play, though?

I guess he could play at center along Dirk to give us one heck of a scoring combo, but he's a pretty weak defensive center. We'd lose any semblance of a shot blocking presence inside.

Terry for Randolph would be great value in the abstract (Randolph>Terry, imo), but since we're a team geared up to win in the here and now, I'm not sure trading for Z-Bo makes sense.

positions
My thinking is that Howard is versatile enough to play guard.  The starting line up would be something like this:

PG Harris
SG Howard
SF Dirk
PF Randolph
C  Diop/Dampier

Dirkles
has gotten so slow that throwing him out there to guard most SF's is going to be a sad proposition.

Maybe it could work, though.

Who knows.

We would match up perfectly with San Antonio... just put Dirk on Bowen, who doesn't do anything on offense anyways.

Done and done
Where do I sign?

I've given up on Harris.  He may be a superstar, but not for Dallas.  Give him the chance to do it somewhere else, and lets stop trying to make him work in a role that he's not going to fill for Dallas.

Why have you given up on him?
The Mavs don't win the SA series last year without him.  Remember that during his first year he went through a coaching change and had to win Avery's respect.  Last season, he was injured near the end of the season.  So I think you can only judge him by this season, and the guy has improved -- just look at his FT % (82.4% after shooting 71.6% last year) or his FG % (49.2% after shooting 42.9% his first season).

He's one of the few guys not afraid to attack the rim, and has devastating speed.

Dallas has a history of letting go of great PGs (Kidd and Nash come to mind). Avery just has to give him more freedom -- I don't like him looking at the bench every time he goes down the floor.

We basically have a Tony Parker type talent here who's gotten better every single year, works hard, and is still very young.

BTW, I wouldn't do this deal because a) D. Harris stays b) the Mavs need a big 2, backup 4, and C/PF - not a SF and c) Tyrone Lue? I don't think so.

I agree
that we should by no means "give up" on Devin. Personally I think he's a much better fit for this team than Jason Terry, and if they both stay I think Harris needs to be the starter and get 35+ minutes of run per game. He's the future, as well as maybe the present.

My thinking regarding the trade was that Marvin Williams would play the 3, and allow Josh Howard to play the role of a very big 2. (Surely he's quick enough defensively to handle it.) We could use FA and the 11th pick to fill the backup 4 and backup PG roles. (Steve Blake and Julian Wright/Tiaggo Splitter, or Mikki Moore and Acie Law... something like that.) Ty Lue was only thrown in to make the cap dollars work.

I'd Love to See Acie Law in a Mavs Uniform
Even though I'm a UT grad, I like this Aggie's game.

BTW, the Dallas area is really becoming a hotbed of NBA talent: Deron Williams, Chris Bosh, heck even Jason Maxiell looked good last night (who went to the same HS I did -- Newman Smith in Carrollton, TX), and eventually Acie Law

heard this one on the ticket...
and i really wish this would come down the pipes like this.  why take Z-bo if he is playing the same postition as dirk?  we need a big that can play D, not one who can take minutes from the MVP!!  so instead, u hope that seattle is geared up to take Durant and is willing to part with Rashard Lewis on a sign and trade(i think he can opt outta his contract).  I think it was Ben of Ben and Skin that suggest that we trade JET and Damp for Rashard.  They might be willing to take on jet cause he is a home town fav that plays well in seattle could take minutes from Ray Allen when he gets hurt again(is his contract up soon? or did he just re-sign?)  and Damp might have a couple of years left on a contract that would make him a viable option for them in the middle for at least a couple of years.  This eases the way for a back court of Harris and howard, while lewis is your small forward(love that jump shot, and he can get to the hoop), while dirk an Gana take the fron court.  This does present problems of course in the front court, but is anyone really gonna remember Damp for anything other than the contract that replaced Nash?
