What a Great Day
This is one of the best days ever. It is so refreshing to watch Mark and Dirk and Avery in total shock. Steve Nash blows Dirk away. Way to go Golden State. I love that you made history at the Mavs expense!

No pressure
But you guys need to take your live-blogging to another level tonight.  I have an International Trade final at 9:30 AM EST tomorrow, and then get on a flight back to Texas for the weekend, studying for Family Law en route.  Needless to say, a 10:30 eastern start time is a little late for me.  I may be up  for a half hour, but I'm counting on yall to give me something to read tomorrown when I'm looking for info on the win ;)

by BrodyV on May 3, 2007 9:36 PM CDT reply actions

well...
at least the jazz-rocket series is going 7 too.  Gotta bring it tonight... Im not as worried as I was before last game... then again, I wasnt worried at the begining of the playoffs either... could get crazy tonight, I hope dirk brings it.

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 9:39 PM CDT reply actions

Good Omen
The Jazz clawed their way back into that series, evened it up, and sent it to a winner take all game 7.

Here's hoping the Mavs follow their lead.

by BrodyV on May 3, 2007 9:39 PM CDT reply actions

I'm so freaking nervous
Not sure what I'd do if the Mavericks lose.  I probably won't watch the rest of the playoffs.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

Good evening!
Are you done with your finals?  Enjoying the playoffs guilt free, unlike me?

The basic philosophical differences between countervailing duties and anti-dumping duties is the entity that takes the action that constitutes unfair trade practices...

AAAAAAARRRRGH!

Yes, finals week was last week for me
Just waiting for my grades.  Good luck with yours!

By the way
This Day in Mavs History
2001 In the first round of the playoffs, Dallas defeated Utah 84-83 to take the series 3-2 and advance to the second round. It was only the 13th time in league history that a team that was down 0-2 came back and won the series (7th time as a best-of-5 series).

by Wes Cox on May 3, 2007 9:52 PM CDT reply actions

pace is way too fast...
need to slow it down... we are not gonna out shoot them!!
We cant hit anything right now... and play defense

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 9:57 PM CDT reply actions

This is not going well
I think all their FG attempts are jumpshots.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 9:58 PM CDT reply actions

why no double team on davis?
keep taking it to the hole though... get em in foul trouble

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

Brick City
We can't buy a bucket.

by Poke @ Mavs Moneyball on May 3, 2007 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

Its over
But take comfort in one thing, we lost to a team that was better than us.

by TexGoesYard on May 3, 2007 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

too many 3s!!!
we will not beat them like this... ever

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

All of their points are 3s
Not happy about that...they're not the Suns.  Take it to the hole and draw fouls!

by Marie on May 3, 2007 10:01 PM CDT reply actions

Stack needs to start
gives us leadership and pose on the court

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 10:01 PM CDT reply actions

All our FGs are 3 balls
DRIVE the LANE!!!

by Poke @ Mavs Moneyball on May 3, 2007 10:01 PM CDT reply actions

Golden State
Clearly focusing on stopping penetration.

by Wes Cox on May 3, 2007 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

What in the world
Effective, but I don't like it.

by BrodyV on May 3, 2007 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

It'd be nice if...
...during a D. Harris drive, someone would at least try to get open.

by Poke @ Mavs Moneyball on May 3, 2007 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

3 drives to the hole...
0 fouls called... that cant happen, he's gotta keep going in there and the calls will come

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Stack
3 for 3 from that corner

by Wes Cox on May 3, 2007 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

Geez
Stack's playing like Finley last night

by Marie on May 3, 2007 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

STACK!!!
FOR MVP!!!! BUT DRIVE IT TO THE HOLE!!!

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

It looks
Like a college game out there.  Might as well be McNeese State v. Bucknell

by BrodyV on May 3, 2007 10:04 PM CDT reply actions

We have to slow it down
We're playing into their hands.

by Poke @ Mavs Moneyball on May 3, 2007 10:04 PM CDT reply actions

agreed...
we are caught up in what they want us to be doing, thats running and gunning and taking only 3s.  I'd like to see dirk get down on the block and DRIVE THE DAMN BALL to the hole.

by Toddy on May 3, 2007 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno
I thought the Mavs did a good job staying with the Warriors at their own game.  At least in the first half.

by achiappanza on May 4, 2007 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

what is so hard about iso-ing d harris or stack and having them DRIVE the ball??  Howard is a beast right now... I like it

And it's only the first quarter.  Be more aggressive!

Dirk
third time he hasn't picked someone up getting back on D

Golden State
really crowding the paint on defense.

by Wes Cox on May 3, 2007 10:14 PM CDT reply actions

terrible
the mavs should have had that quarter by a lot.  they got really complacent.  avery should have called a timeout.

by ab03 @ Mavs Moneyball on May 3, 2007 10:14 PM CDT reply actions

Now Baron's back
Stack is keeping us in this game.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 10:14 PM CDT reply actions

Damnit!
Ok, I promised myself I'd go to bed after the first.

I haven't been able to go to sleep till after 2 am the days I've watched the games.  Can't do that today.  So have fun guys.

Nice rotation tonight
Hello all.

I like what Avery's doing - seems like Devin is bringing good energy. Diop is doing what he needs to be doing. Just hope Avery doesn't forget about Croshere.

by rwake on May 3, 2007 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

this game
really pissing me off.  dallas is getting all the foul calls and they are taking terrible shots still.  dirk is playing like he is sleep walking.  this could easily turn on them in the second half.

where is the urgency?

I hope he keeps firing, though. I trust that he'll get it going. If he stops shooting, that'll throw off the rest of the offense.

by rwake on May 3, 2007 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Dirk
Come on, he had 6 games.  Surely you're not going to claim that the real Dirk didn't show up.  The real Dirk just got defended well.

Again I say, if this guy can't drive to the hoop regardless of defense, he doesn't deserve the MVP.

by achiappanza on May 4, 2007 1:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Finally!
He makes one from the field.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 10:45 PM CDT reply actions

Dirk can still
turn it around.  I just hope he doesn't wait until the last 3 minutes.

by caseyrebelde on May 3, 2007 10:48 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, he has the whole half
What's bugging me is that Baron Davis is still a factor even when he's hurt.  He can't run, but he's still hitting his shots.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

It's his Walt Frazier game
If the Mavs couldn't win against a hobbled Baron Davis, then there are no excuses.

by achiappanza on May 4, 2007 1:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I wish
Dirk would get deeper in the paint and post up.  He doesn't actively demand the ball in the paint, instead choosing to remain behind his defender.  It'd be great if he'd break out a spin move now and again.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 10:53 PM CDT reply actions

You know Avery
is going to say something to Dirk at half about his lack of aggressiveness.. This is gonna be an exciting 24 minutes!! GO MAVS

I'd love to know how much he makes during an NBA season

I don't like watching that guy
Just because I get squeamish.  I like the lady with the bowls and she flips them on her head while on a unicycle or some kind of contraption.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Favorite halftime shows
The toilet seat kind of weirds me out as well. I like Quick Change and the bowl lady. The homo-erotic gymnast brothers have always confused me. I'd be interested in the answer to Wes's question - how much does the toilet guy make?

by rwake on May 3, 2007 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh yeah
Quick change.  Unfortunately, I've never seen bowl lady or the quick change people in person.  Whenever I watch live games, the halftime shows are all crappy local acts.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

All I know is
I'm not capable of dealing with a loss right now.  I've been a fan through the dark ages (at least we had the Cowboys) and to lose now would be unthinkable.  I'm really trying to prepare myself for a loss but at this point the Mavs are the root cause of all my pain.

by caseyrebelde on May 3, 2007 11:04 PM CDT reply actions

The Mavs
Have three team fouls already.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:13 PM CDT reply actions

by caseyrebelde on May 3, 2007 11:15 PM CDT reply actions

Explain to me
Why Dirk's main spot tonight is on the far baseline?

They don't even have to think about double teaming him when he's there. Does that make ANY sense?

This defense sucks
And please, Dirk, plant yourself in the paint and demand the ball!

We should have built a comfortable lead by driving to the basket, and now the Mavs need to overcome an 18 pt deficit.

To cut the deficit.  There's a lot of time left; they can chip away at it by attacking the basket.  Unfortunately that's not what they're doing.

three pointers
23 atempts already. This team was woefully unprepared to play in this game, and the big run came after the half, when coaches make adjustments.

Another missed 3...this time by Stack
We're down by 21.

But then he drives to the hoop and stops the run.

But that's sports for you.

by achiappanza on May 4, 2007 1:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure I can watch the 4th
Does that make me a bad fan?  This is just so difficult to swallow.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:39 PM CDT reply actions

No...
Anyone who participates in this blog as much as you is a true fan.

With any other team, I would still think the Mavs could come back, but the Warriors are having an enchanted playoff run -- they're hitting 3s like crazy -- Stephen Jackson and Baron really stepped up.  Unlike Wade, this guy was hurt.  Incredible.

After last year's Finals, we may have to endure this claim to infamy: Mavs were part of the biggest upset in league history.

Dirk's going to get hammered by the media and fans unfortunately.  I have no idea why he was so uninvolved.

by dirk41 on May 3, 2007 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm watching half of the 4th
And will probably follow the score online.  There will be a lot of knocks on the Mavericks, especially Dirk, this postseason.  I think Kerr made a good point during the broadcast; he said that he spoke with Flip Saunders about Dallas' situation and Flip said that the problem may be that a lot of their games toward the end of the season were meaningless and players were sitting out to rest.  They had nothing left to play for (other than being top seed in the West) while all the games for the Warriors were significant since they were fighting for a playoff spot.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

NO EARLY JUMPERS!
I've seen this Mavs team... it's the one that went out in the first round against Sacramento three years ago. ugh

by branwilson on May 3, 2007 11:41 PM CDT reply actions

I think what bugs me the most
Is not only that the Mavericks can be out in the first round, but it's also a historical defeat.  They broke/made a lot of records this year and that, by far, would be the worst.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:42 PM CDT reply actions

MVP Press Conference
I haven't seen an MVP press conference during the offseason. Usually the MVP gets it in front of the home crowd during the second round or conference final.

by OCOEEBALLA on May 3, 2007 11:44 PM CDT reply actions

If Dirk does win it
He ought to hand it to Nash or Duncan or someone.  I know the MVP award is based on performance during the regular season, but it supposed to translate into the postseason too.  Shaq will really think the award is tainted.  That is, if Dirk wins it.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

are you kidding?
It is based on the regular season. Dirk was the best during the regular season. End of story.
Go Horns, Go Vince, Go Mavs

by Cyrus on May 3, 2007 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, it's based on the regular season
But I think it's an unspoken agreement that it's supposed to carry over to the postseason too.  Maybe that's just how I feel about it, I guess.

by Marie on May 3, 2007 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok,
Then Avery needs to give back his coach of the year from last year.

Makes about as much sense.

I would not be surprised if Dirk won it, but Stern takes it away and the public never finds out.  The NBA often strikes me as not above board.

Ok, here's my proposal
hard fouls as close to flagrant as can be on Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson and hope they get themselves thrown out... it is cheap and sickening, but this team has no guts for anything else

Stunned
Did not see this coming after weathering the crowd in the 1st quarter and only being down by 2 while shooting so poorly.  I thought, like Stee Kerr, that we'd own the 2nd half.

Baron Davis is the MVP...

I didn't realize how poor his regular season numbers were compared to the playoffs.

Does the regular season count for anything?

Bill Simmons is a loser
It's pretty easy to call a fanbase the best in the league when they haven't had their hearts ripped out by the NBA.

What makes the GS fanbase any different than the Mavs 5 or 6 years ago?

It's pretty easy to get excited and cheer every good thing for your team or boo everything that goes against your team.

The Mavs suck worse than Bill Simmons though...that is my sad realization.

Yes - Congratulations
That is one awesome offensive team.  And their gambling style of defense is going to give other teams fits too.

The only way the sting will be lessened is if they win the whole thing.

With Avery's insistence on the small ball, and on tonight's game, it's safe to say that he is a Doc Rivers style coach.

Total ownage by Don Nelson too.

We're probably not going to break 90 points
Give Don Nelson a lot of credit.  The offense was totally out of sync.

I never thought scoring points was going to be a problem.  Dirk hasn't even cracked double figures yet (8 points).

Yes, congrats to the Warriors
And especially their fans.  Good luck to the next team that visits the Oracle arena.  Give credit to Don Nelson and his players for pulling this off.  I just wish we could have challenged them throughout the series.  This Dallas team seems completely different than the team that won 67 games.

It Serves Them Right........
.....for not playing their best players in that next to last game of the season. Why wouldn't you take the opportunity to beat an opponent who has owned you all season in one game and instead put yourself in a position to have to beat them FOUR times! It makes absolutely no sense!

Stupidist thing I can imagine!

For next year, we need
no Don Nelson/GSW in the first round.

Other than that, probably a true playmaking PG and an offensive center/PF.

Golden State
Hey, they have been the best team in the NBA over the last month and these two weeks proved it was no fluke. I give them lots of credit.

I am still disappointed in the way the Mavs played. I don't think they played anywhere near their best ball, but it would have taken their best ball to beat the Warriors in this series.

Way to go Dubs.

I satyed in bed for
like three straight days, with only Jack Daniels and a bag of dried fruit I found under my bed to keep my company. I literally only got up to go to the bathroom.

Luckily getting Bavetta'd last year crushed all my hopes and dreams of ever winning a title, so I don't have nearly as far to fall this year.

But at least we got beat by another team this year, rather than by the refs.

You know after thinking about it for a minute
Golden State had better win in the next round. Hell, even in the Conference Finals if they get there.

Why? WE didn't just lose to this team only for them to get swept in the first round. That will make us look even more weak.

Makes sense?

I blame Avery for not laying Damp, but this is the first I've heard of him being too injured to play.

I'm just saying...

Why pay a guy that much money, and play him so much during the regular season... then never play him during the playoffs.

I hope you're right and he was injured, cause otherwise I'm nonplussed.

I have no proof
other than the fact that he's STILL wearing that shoulder brace thing and he couldn't seem to grab a rebound over his head the whole series (could only tip them out)

by Wes Cox on May 4, 2007 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Broken-hearted
Is it wrong to want to see Dirk cry during the post-game conference? I'm his biggest fan and he let me down ... shirking responsibility and never wiping his doomed look off his face the entire series. How dare he act like that ... we won 67 games this season and, make no mistake, he was the biggest reason for it. I wouldn't want that type of behavior on the least talented player on my team, much less my best player/MVP. Shame
