Well...
I guess as Mavs blogger I'm supposed to have some huge post either passing out blame or delivering profound optimism. I won't be though. I refuse to join the millions of people who will be piling on my team the rest of the postseason, and I'm currently incapable of providing the second.
All I can say is that it sucked. It's going to be a long offseason. And I can't wait until November for it to all start again.
GO MAVS

Still a great season
Even if the Dubs shock the world, although not Oakland, and win the championship, we'd still only have 58 wins. You've had a season for the ages and will go down as having accomplished the sixth best regular season AND the regular season MVP.
Plus Cuban handled all the post game stuff with a ton of class. You have nothing to be ashamed of, so hold your collective heads high.

This isn't the end of the world
Anyways, I really hope that this feeling of dissapointment sinks in with the Mavs players and will give them some motivation for next year. How did everything unravel so fast? What would have happened if the Mavs didn't play Golden State in the first round? Why does it seem that the teams that play like dogshit in the regular season and just barely make it in find so much success (see 2005-2006 Miami Heat)?
Oddly enough I find myself not really respecting the Golden State Warriors very much. I can't really place it, but maybe seeing them respond to this like they just won some sort of one-time-only-intergalactic-basketball-championship and have confetti and streamers drop from the ceiling makes me all the more upset that they don't really deserve it because they coasted through the regular season. I hope they have to play Yao Ming because that might be pretty funny to watch.
Oh, and to Baron "Boom-Dizzle" Davis - if you're so hurt and you have to walk around the court and grimace in pain all the time - just retire.

My bad, "coast" should read "struggle" on my post.
Seriously though, your fans were acting like they just pummeled the Monstars from Space Jam.
"The whole world was rooting for us over your soft Dallas team."
In this context, the "whole world" means people who just started watching basketball since the playoffs started and grabbing hideous We Believe shirts off of Ebay?
This was the 1st round dude, your Dubs have a ways to go before any real glory. It is not like you get a shiny championship ring for beating a team in the 1st round of the playoffs.

And um...
Blowing 2-0 leads in the Finals!
And um...
Winning 67 games and then getting knocked out when the games actually matter!
So you just better... you know... watch it! As you continue on... in the playoffs... while the Mavs...go...home...to collect MVP trophies they don't deserve...
Aw.

Dallas Mavericks: 0 Championships.

Thanks as well
I'm with you, Wes, on not going crazy with the blame game. There are several things to be optimistic about:
- Josh Howard continues to raise his game, and was the Mavs' best player
- Devin Harris had a very good series (except for Game 6) and seems to have more confidence in his jump shot
- Diop was very active and even contributed offensively with tip-ins
- Stackhouse provided leadership of the bench -- if it wasn't for him the game would have been a rout in the 1st half

Sick, but conditioned.
67 wins. Man, it's going to be a long time until next season. I guess that's how long we have to wait. again.
Hey Wes, I do have to give you due gratitude for the work you've put into this blog during the season. It seriously felt like it was going to have a special ending, and your hard work keeping us close to the team made it all the more enjoyable. Just make sure that you keep the fix going at least periodically until it's time to tip the opener for '07 - '08.
As hard as it seems now, I think I'll have to pull for the Warriors from here on out.
by DitchThePlaybook on May 4, 2007 3:23 AM CDT 0 recs
Well...
But you have to give Golden State credit. They played really well. As a team, I don't mind Golden State at all (except for Stephen Jackson). So, I hope they give a good showing in the second round.
I really look forward to seeing what moves Dallas will make in the off-season. I don't expect major changes, but I think they need to add some more athleticism.
With that being said, Dallas had a great season. I feel bad for Dirk. He played great in the playoffs last year, and a lot of people seem to forget that.
Oh well, looking forward to next season.
by jesse on May 4, 2007 8:49 AM CDT 0 recs
Gotta hand it to them
There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the future--we have a good young core, and Avery will learn from this. He's had so much success so early, I think sometimes I forget how inexperienced a head coach he really is.
This team got me through some tough times this season--the winning streaks were fun, and they seemed to genuinely gel and like each other. Maybe the defeat this year will lower expectations next year and the team can bounce back.
Anyway, let me add to the chorus of thanks for the hard work on the blog. This is my first post, but I have been a religious reader for months now. Let's keep it going in the off-season and next season!
GO MAVS!

Dallas didn't choke
Another bogus SportsCenter comment: Dallas "gagged" against a team that "barely dragged its way into the playoffs." They imply that Golden State is a terrible team because that makes their "Dallas choked" storyline more dramatic. But the fact is that Golden State has a good team, when healthy, and this was obvious over the last 20 odd games when the Warriors went -- I think -- 16-5 against the toughest schedule in the NBA, beating a bunch of Western Conference playoff teams to get into the playoffs. This was not a normal 8th seed.
One last incorrect SportsCenter theme: "Nowitski was terrible." They just love the drama: an MVP candidate "choked"... The Warriors were double teaming Nowitski 20 feet from the basket! He did what an intelligent basketball player should do in that situation: he passed the ball. Yes, the Mavs lost the series, but I don't think it was because Dirk decided trying to score over a double-team a mile away from the hoop would be a bad idea.

they didn't choke but they weren't themselves
I think a lot of the "choke" criticism is based on Dallas' record alone. 67-15 is an accomplishment. However it's meaningless if you don't carry that momentum into the playoffs.
And how does a team "choke" when the other team had their goat all year long? Nellie knows this Mavs team all too well and forced them to play Golden State's game. Now I would be saying they "choked" if they got beat by the Clippers but certainly not the Warriors becuase of the Matchups and Nellie's expertise.
They didn't choke because they didn't accidentally blew the series - they got beat and it really hurts to say it.

it is hard to call it a choke
did the mavs let a great opportunity slip away... yah they did... but to choke you need to be in control at some point, any point... the mavs were never the better team in this series... the mavs were never in control... choke is probably the wrong word
anyone who knows anything about the NBA knows that these warriors are better than an 8 seed... and will it still be considered a choke when the warriors go to the west finals... still tough to swallow though

apology
It was a choke, though. You won 67 games and lost to a team that only made the playoffs because the Clippers fell to pieces. The Warriors played their hearts out, but come on. It's still an 8 seed. And while no team is impervious to all matchups, and these matchups were considerably worse for the Mavs than any other, playoff experience and poise should have won out, along with coaching. Put this way. I can't see the Spurs losing to the Warriors (and I hate the Spurs).
Finally, Dirk was terrible. He took only 2 shots in the third quarter of his best game. He's the MVP and he has 8 points? 8? Yeah, the Warriors did a great job of bringing the double team, but name a great playoff performance by an MVP candidate, not even winner, just candidate, and I'll bet you they were double teamed. If he's getting doubled when he has the ball and he can't break it, he needs to work the offensive glass (which they completely surrendered last night). There are ways to score and contribute even when you're double teamed (how about Nash's 21 assists in game 4 this year?).
I do feel for the Mavs fans, but you've got a great nucleus and will be back stronger than ever next year.

Thanks Wes
Chin up Mavs fans. We've experienced pain before...we're Mavs fans.
Next season I pray we don't own the other teams (save Golden State and the Suns) throughout the regular season like we did this year. Steve Kerr said something last night about how each team came into the playoffs -- GState fighting, Mavs playing meaningless games. I think there's something to that.
We need a true Point. Love Jet and DHarris, but neither is good at distributing the ball. Jet looks to shoot, D drives then can't see over any of the other players to dish the ball.
Hate to say this, but we may need another big time star. Dirk obviously is not comfortable in the role of #1. But who? What's Baron Davis's contract like?
Lastly, we forgot Avery is still a young coach. But he's a "fool-me-once" kinda coach. He got out-coached, but he learned from it.

Mavs a worthy opponent -- a little unlucky?
- The Dubs were unrealistically hot from the three point line. No way they are that good that they can make off-balance contested threes for 6 games. No one in the NBA can do that. Their best season averages are nowhere that good. Baron is streaky fron three at best. You can't win against a team swishing 30 footers all series. Won't happen.
- Dallas needs a pure point guard in the worst way. Terry and Harris are ok, but both are shoot-first. After wathing this series, it's a wonder Nowitzki scored 15 points per ganme this season. He really gets no easy set-ups from his teammates. He passes and never gets it back in position to score. Make a trade -- do something.
See you next year!

If the cards fall right...
- You have to continue with the hot hand -- making everything you throw up, playing unbelievable D, and riding the wave of euphoria that your crowd can generate.
- If you make it to the WC Finals, you better hope you're playing San Antonio. Because the Suns play just like you, only better.

The Spurs
Also, in a way, if you played the Spurs you'd still be playing the Mavs because of Michael Finley (the Mavs' highest paid player).
The Suns on the other hand are totally on top of their game. You say that everyone's healthy on the Dubs, well take a look at the Suns and let me know whether or not you think that that's the secret to their success this season. They are just like you only a lot better.

New member
Like many of the members, I have been a MAV fan since their inception into the league. Been around for the highs and the lows and without question this one hurts deeply ( more so than last years finals strangely). I never bought into characterizing the Warriors as just the "lowly" 8 seed that was happy just to be in the playoffs. They played tough basketball the last quarter of the season and played at their peak performance and should be lauded for their accomplishment.
The biggest dissapointment hasn't been being beaten by a team that out performed us physically. They have talented players that would have given any team they played a handful playing as they did. Being overmatched on the mental front is far and away the biggest disappointment of this series. I never would have thought that the MAVS would have played so timidly.
When the dust settles I would expect that we will see some new faces comprising the squad next year. I am not one of those that thinks that we need a major overhaul but do feel that we are in need of a low post presence that could provide us a legitimate scoring option (8-12 per game) that would be honored by opponents.
As bad as it seems now, I think that this year will not have been for nothing. There were accomplishments, albeit secondary, that showed that this team is capable of fine basketball. Keep the chins MAV fans...
