Eddie Jones

Apparently the Mavs have come to terms with Eddie Jones...or so reports the Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket. Definitely an upgrade over Croshere in my opinion, and I'll take Jones perimeter D over PJ Brown's size. Normally age would be a concern, but Jones is a guy that's aged well. He averaged 10.4 points and 4.0 boards after the All-star break last season.

Does this seal Brown in Phoenix?

Thoughts?

well...
We've had the "glue-man" 2/3 for the whole Cuban era (Strickland, griffin, buckner), and I see him as an upgrade for that role because he has been an all-star and all-defensive 2nd team. It's also pretty clear that Donnie and Avery like him because they tried to pick him up in February last year, but he ended up going to the Heat.

He is 35 though, and while stack and e.j. would have been sweet in '97, I don't care for it much now. Maybe, there is something special about scrappy veteran guards who are "a step slower yet a step wiser" coming off the bench (it certainly hasn't hurt the spurs with van exel, berry, and finley), but I would have rather seen donnie extend an offer to pietrus and wait and see if GS matched it.

mavs stacked at 1, 2 and 3
are decent on 5 (as long as they don't face a stud center)
just need to work on 4

Meh.
we'll see how much perimeter D he has left in the tank. i'm not particularly fond of gambling on these 'glue guys' on the backside of their career at the cost of roster space for young talent that's waiting for PT.

10 and 4 is an okay average when you're 6th option of the offense, but he ain't getting 30 min/game in this rotation like he did in Miami.

yeah i agree...
id much rather have seen webber sign with us and have mo shots get some more pt during the season to find out what to do with him at the end of this season... i think we are too thin on the front court... especially if dirk, damp or diop get hurt... we essentially run a george then at the 4 with no depth... or heaven forbid that slow rookie fazekas we just picked up... lets all pray for the ankles to hold up this year...

Webber
Well, it turns out that Donnie can still pick up Webber, Brown, or Pietrus this offseason. Eddie Jones came on the cheap for just the bi-annual exception.

Avery, according to Chuck Carlton of DMN, said in a teleconference that "Before training camp, we're going to add two key veterans to our team. It's not going to be anybody that's going to necessarily lead to a championship, but two key veterans who we think can help us achieve our goal of winning a championship."

Well, with Jones signed, it sounds like Dallas is going after Webber and Brown.

Webber coming to Dallas would be grand. The Mavericks, who may be pro sports most heart-wrenching franchise, and Webber with his "Michigan time-out curse" seem like a perfect match to turn things around together. Free Dallas and Webber from the shackles of loserdom!

Finally
The superstar we need so that league will let us win a title!
The NBA is rigged. I've been telling you it is, and now the FBI backs me up. If you don't believe the truth by now, you've got brain problems.

But what about the roster . . .
But what about the bigger problem:  who's gonna be cut?  Our roster is too crowded now.

1 - Terry / Harris / Barea
2 - Jones / Buck / Ager
3 - Howard / Stack / George
4 - Dirk / Fazekas / Bass
5 - Diop / Damp / Mbenga

What about Pops?  What about Reyshawn Terry?  I think Pops is definitely an NBA player, as not very many people can BOTH rebound and run the floor like he can.  I'm not as confident about Terry, but he certainly seems to be worth a spot for a year at least.  We did trade up to get him, remember . . .

I proposed earlier that we should cut Mbenga so that we can keep Pops.  Should we also cut (well, buy-out) Buckner so we can keep Terry?  We know Mark Cuban has the deep pockets . . .

And how the heck would we have room for PJ Brown or Chris Webber?

(P.S. The depth chart is a VERY rough estimate, and I'm not looking to debate the positions on it.  I just want to show how crowded the roster is.)
