Webber/Posey to the Mavs?

http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_22959.shtml

Apparently some LA Radio station is reporting the Mavs are interested in signing Webber for a portion of the MLE, and then signing Posey for the remainder.

Seems like the Mavs are really trying to veteran up this team....not sure how I feel about those moves, but I guess I like the CWebb backup to Dirk idea.

Wow
I'd be on board with adding Webber, but where would Posey fit in? We already have Josh, Stack, Ager, George, Reyshawn Terry and Eddie Jones at the 2/3 position.

Doesn't make much sense to me.

The NBA is rigged. I've been telling you it is, and now the FBI backs me up. If you don't believe the truth by now, you've got brain problems.

2nd round picks?
Is there any reason to protect roster spots for 2nd-round picks? Sure it was a deep draft and Terry and Fazekas are both solid prospects, but it makes no sense to hold a spot for them or recent summer league stars(barea, bass, and pops) instead of signing webber if this report is true.

Even with his gimpy knees, signing Webber adds a dimension to the roster that the franchise has never had. Dallas has never had a player with his talent in the post. This is not a diss at Dirk who is arguably better player (I'm comparing their primes, not where they are right now), but Dirk has never been very skilled down low, only sufficient. Avery has done really well with two centers with no offensive game, and having someone playing center who can reliably catch passes will do wonders, I promise

However, I don't know how I still don't know how I feel about signing Webber. I was really positive about this yesterday, but I have to wonder what will be the mavericks ultimate destiny with Webber? Will this increase the jinx factor for the Mavs or will he be a karmic-esque light that leads to the ultimate redemption at the altar of the basketball gods?

p.s. I don't like Dallas signing Posey

I wonder if MBenga
might be the next to go.

As someone pointed out a while back, Fazekas can foul Shaq/Yao 6 times just as well as Mbanga can.

Probably
I would think that it makes more sense to let Mbenga go than Fazekas, especially if you're doing it to make room for Webber.

And Posey.  Yeech.  He can be this year's Croshere- a veteran signing that never gets off the bench.

I also wonder if there's a chance of a trade to the Celtics.  Rayshawn Terry for next years 2nd rounder?  They've got to fill out the roster somehow...

Celtics
If I were them I'd have been all over vets like C-Webb, PJ Brown, ect.

They'd be an attractive place for vets like that to make one last run, you'd think.

It looks like Webb's off the market now, but if I were them I'd be all over PJ Brown and Posey... and I'd be trying like hell to get a decent veteran pg in there.

pg's
Are there any decent veteran pg's on the market?

by Rigaudeau on Aug 6, 2007 6:28 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not really
There's Boykins, but I don't think he even qualifies as a point.

They'd likely have to do it through trade.

I guess having Rondo out there isn't too much of a liability since with all those other scorers out there all you'll be asking him to do is pass and defend.

But if were loading up for a title run these next two years I'd be on the phone with Philly trying to talk them into taking Rondo + Next year's 1st rounder + salary filler for Andre Miller. Then try to grab PJ Brown and whoever else you can off the free agent slag heap.

Shoals comments at fanhouse
http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/08/06/webber-joining-mavs-would-be-everyones-mistake/

"I cannot begin to explain how stupid this would be. When Mutoni discussed it last week, it was in the afterglow of the Kevin Garnett trade. The Mavs, though, aren't the Celtics, building a castle-in-the-sky team that may or may not work anywhere off the printed page. Johnson has a plan, and Webber doesn't fit it. The former Mr. Tyra is a smart player, but his body will only slow further, and his skills have never been of the gutsy variety. His greatest asset now is his passing out of various posts, which is not exactly the offense Avery runs. Plus Webber is soft and a choker, which are two labels this team doesn't need.

Hoops World thinks that Webber could be an effective substitute for Dirk ... to me, this might be cursing both player for the duration of their basketball existences."

What I don't understand is why so many people are down on webber? He's clearly better than p.j. brown, but if the mavs were on the verge of signing p.j., many in the media would be saying, "This IS exactly what the mavs need, a smart, veteran post presence coming off the bench"
