mickael pietrus

"It's no secret that the Mavericks have thought Pietrus is the sort of player that would fit well in coach Avery Johnson's system. When he was a restricted free agent this off-season, the Mavericks made the obligatory calls to Pietrus' agent if for nothing else than to kick the tires.

Could Pietrus' start on Wednesday have been a chance to showcase him for the Mavericks? "

Eddie Sefko thinks so.

Career avg 8.7 pts, 44% shooting.

Think Mavs are still interested?  Seems like Ju.Howard and Hassell are busts.  He definitely has athleticism in spades.

Hmm
The appealing thing about that is if he plays SF, then we slide Josh to SG, and our backcourt size issue is addressed.

Here's the problem- what do we have that they want?  Sure, Hassel and Fazekas for Pietrus and Perovic works.  But why would they do it?

More likely they'll want George and Jones.  While that makes the Mavs better on paper, I'm not sure that it makes them more likely to win the championship by messing with chemistry.

i've never even heard of perovic
is he even worth picking up? a 7'2" center in the d-league doesn't seem like he has a role on this team behind damp, bass, and diop.

It
was to make the salary work.

I hope not.
I'm not entirely convinced that it would improve them or 'solve' the size problems at the 2. I think George and Jones are capable defenders, which is why they were brought in. Plus, you lose some serious veteran experience on the floor if you trade them - especially for someone that's publicly begging to trade his bird rights for 35 minutes a game. Doesn't outwardly sound like it would bode well for team chemistry.

If Nellie would take Fazekas and Hassel and JuHo and a wheelbarrow full of Bud Light for him, then yeah ship 'em off.  He still ain't gettin' 35 min. a night.

To be clear
That's my feeling too.  Hassel and Faz?  Go for it.    But I think that George getting healthy and Jones getting into the flow of the offense, along with the continued development of Brandon Bass will be the keys to this team.

the key is dj mbenga
he's secretly a mavs undercover agent. we need him to convince the rest of his team and management that hassel and fazekas is a steal.

Oh
now that's sneaky.  Maybe there's a little bit more of a Don / Donnie rivalry than we thought :)

Secret Agent Mbenga!
That needs to be comic book or something. Especially since he's black belt and speaks seven languages.

One problem
It might be a little hard for a 7', 245# guy from Congo to blend into a crowd...

unless...
he's in the congo.

Yes well
There's always that.

(and is it me, or have we absolutely shattered the all time, during work, no game going on, comments for the day?)

now
we just need to get all those other mavs fans on the espn mavs board to come here and it will be nonstop partying.

I'm not so sure about that.
I happen to like the small-ish community we have here. The signal-to-noise ratio is favorable.

After reading the majority of comments on the GSoM blog that Wes mentioned from the game, it makes me appreciate the fact that a large percentage of the comments here on this site are from people who have something insightful to say about basketball. Maybe some in-game threads are exempt, but hey....

Not all of the SB Nation blogs have this luxury. :)

Would that be...
...me? I'm a loyal GSoMer, figured I'd pop over here and set up an account to give you guys a rundown of Mickael Pietrus, although I certainly don't speak for everyone.

Pietrus was a surprise draft pick. I seem to recall Ridnour and Collison were both still on the board, and the Warriors had been linked to them. In any case, Pietrus was considered very athletic, very raw, and perhaps a little light on the basketball IQ. Unfortunately, all of those things have appeared to be true, and for the most part remain so to this point.

In a certain sense, I almost feel like he's regressed while he's been in Golden State. His rookie year he looked like such a phenomenal on ball defender, and showed such power and flash getting to the rim, that I actually advocated trading Jason Richardson and making Mickael the starting 2 guard. But as time went on, his play became more erratic, and I realized that what I had witnessed was more likely a prolonged hot streak, or inspired play sparked by the beginning of his career.

So, here's the nitty gritty... Pietrus can play defense, and do so very effectively. I've seen him play Kobe Bryant admirably and skillfully. Problem is, he's also not terribly smart, and he gets baited into a lot of fouls, some far from the basket (I think it was such a call that killed our momentum against you guys, him and Mbenga) in inexcusable circumstances.

He's not good with the ball in his hands. Once again, he seemed more proficient at creating his own shot before Don Nelson took over, but even watching him dribble upcourt in a fast break scenario can be harrowing. Something he's particularly guilty of is not being able to make his mind up as he goes to the basket whether to dunk or layup or pass, which leads to awkward fumbling and turnovers.

His shooting ability comes and goes, and is probably a little better than people give him credit for. He's got a dead-eye shot from the corner on the near sideline. If a defender closes out quickly on him, though, he has developed a habit of pump faking and hopping to one side before launching a fadeaway jumper, which both brings him inside the three point line and is so awkward that I've only seen him hit it once (against you guys).

Also, he travels. He travels a lot, and it's always the unforced, taking a step before the first dribble kind. Anytime he catches the ball outside the arc and tries to make a move, I hold my breath.

That said, it could well be that he's just not cut out for the kind of team the Warriors are, and he could be a great player in a more structured system. He's supposed to be a very goofy, energetic and beloved personality on the team, for what that's worth. I can honestly say, though, that I'd probably do the swap for Hassell if Dallas threw in a 2nd rounder, that's just me.

From that roundup
It sounds like he'd be a much better player if he played for someone like AJ or Pops or Hubie or even Jerry Sloan (though he seems more personally abrasive than the others).  That being said, although it might be better for Pietrus personally and in his development as a player, he might bridle at that kind of criticism and structure, and end up imploding the team he was on.

Given that, I hope the Mavs don't make the move.

by BrodyV on Jan 4, 2008 1:03 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good breakdown.
I'd say that's pretty much my impression of him in the limited amount of time that I've seen the guy play. It's tempting to see what he might become, but I don't think it's reasonable for ANY player to demand minutes so he can learn how to make good decisions and be disciplined on the floor of regular season games. That's what the D-league and the offseason are for.

As for working under another system, guys who have a 'low basketball IQ' don't tend to last very long around coaches like Pops and AJ.

Thanks for the Insight
I hope the mavs make this move, especially if its just for a hassel, Fazekas, Ager, Barrea, draft pick Etc.  I think Nellie tends to give up on guys a little to quick especially if they don't fit his vision of basketball.

Well...
...I stopped by to see how this place was talking about the Mavs win. It's sort of masochistic. When the Warriors lose, I don't feel better about it until I wrap myself in it a little.

About Nelson... interestingly enough, Nelson seems to have a longer leash on Pietrus than you'd expect, given the shortcomings in his game. In fact, Nelson opened the season playing Pietrus as the starting power forward, and whgile he's acknowledged in interviews that he isn't that smart a player, he's done so tactfully, unlike when he called Mike Dunleavy "the dumbest 'smart' player I've ever seen."

In all honesty, I could see Pietrus doing very well for a team like Orlando or Toronto that has a young, athletic big who can free up shots for him. I'm not sure if Dirk would free up many shots for him, and while he might be the best defensive 2/3 you'd have, he also has an atrocious foul rate, as you can see being discussed here: http://goldenstateofmind.com/story/2008/1/3/1540/68530

Just a friendly Warriors fan, in for a cup of tea...
