Around SBN: Bills must alter strategy to make offense work

Remember That Starting SG We Need So Badly...

Well, Phoenix just got him... Literally for nothing.

Link

Jason Richardson traded to Phoenix for Raja Bell and Boris Diaw...

I'm not sure how this makes any sense for Charlotte... Bell and Diaw suck, and neither of their contracts are expiring...

Would you have offered up Stackhouse, Devean George, and Brandon Bass to get into these discussions? Two expiring contracts and at least one young player with some upside would have been better than Bell/Diaw, wouldn't it?

Looks like Steve Kerr is conceding that he screwed up nine months ago trying to turn Phoenix into something it wasn't, and making a move to let the Suns get back to what they do best... JRich and Amare on the break is gonna be sick... Losing Bell has little affect because Matt Barnes is basically the same exact player...

Right now, Richardson is basically Shawn Marion with a better jump shot, so he fits real well into what they were doing before they traded Matrix away... Only negative with Richardson is he's about a year or two from going the way of Mike Finley, but I don't think his contract is too long, so it's not a major issue...

Oh, and for those that think this is a playoff team, this puts Phoenix back firmly in front of Dallas, IMO...

What the hell is our front office doing???

he wouldv’e completed our lineup and gave us a shot….

our front office sucks

we could have had Roger Mason Jr and a scrub backup center instead of just Diop, who is a scrub backup center.

Diop has always been a lazy and unmotivated player until his contract was coming to an end.

Have fun Phoenix

in playing under your coach who “preaches defence”. You just traded away your best guard stopper.

Unless of course, they go back to 7 seconds or less. Then it isn’t a bad trade.

Ouch!

that trade stings so bad! Oh well Im sure we could have given them something better but I guess the Bobcats were too impatient to wait til Dec 15 damn! Cross our fingers for Dec 15 onwards. If we here the “we love our team” phrase again then it means we just missed a really big opportunity with that J Rich trade.

Interesting trade for Phoenix

And by ‘interesting’ I mean uh-oh. The famed “Mavs killer” is now on the Suns.

Josh + Stack for Joe Johnson! Do it Donnie! (We can only dream…)

Throw in Bass and may have something there.

Hawks would have to be hanging around 500 and Bass would need a new contract.

I have witnessed time and time again.

Hawks would never.

What they don’t need, is another athletic 3-4 type. You trying to put Howard, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Al Horford, and Brandon Bass all on the same team?

Howard at the 2,

Smith at 3, Bass at 4, Horford in the middle. Acie Law at point. Williams only has 2 years left. Bibby is a free agent and Johnson’s contract ends in 2 years. With those 2 players salaries off the books they can lock up Howard, Bass, Horford and Law.

I have witnessed time and time again.

I guess if you're a 500 team that is going to

lose your 2nd best player this year and your best player next season, you should just keep them instead of trading them for younger players or younger players and draft picks.

I have witnessed time and time again.

Josh Smith

is their second best player.

2 trades

that will make 3 teams better this year..

Josh Howard for Chris Kaman

Erick Dampier and Brandon Bass for Marvin Williams, Zaza Pachulia, and Speedy Claxton.

Clippers: Davis, Howard, Thornton, Randolph, Camby
Hawks: Bibby, Johnson, Smith, Horford, Dampier
Mavs: Kidd, JJ, Marvin, Dirk, Kaman

another wow

Marvin Williams is a waste of sperm!!! He has not produced as a #2 in the draft should. Both those trades would make the mavericks the laughing stock of the league tyd3311

mind u Kaman is a good player both Josh Howard is better. If Kaman is so talented why have the Clippers under produced yr after yr. Even with Camby, Davis, and Randolph there still 8 games under .500

haha maybe that comment was a bit much, but I think Joe Johnson is seriously overrated.

by randyfbaby on Dec 14, 2008 5:20 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He really isn't..

He is the only true scorer they have or had since he has been there, Smith and Williams are still too raw and inconsistent offensively.. never played with a good center.. Bibby can shoot 3’s now, but isn’t the same player he was in Sac. Put him on a team like Dallas, and you would be saying Josh Howard who??

We were not going to get Richardson, how could you think that we might get him.

Have you seen his contract? Too much money for the next two seasons. And Richardson is not basically Marion with a better jump shot. Marion can play great defense, while Richardson, not so much. The Bobcats did this, because they get 2 nice players for a few more years. The Bobcats know they are light years away from becoming a NBA champion, so why trade Richardson for basically Bass, who is a free agent this year, when you can get Bell for 2 years and Diaw for 3. It’s like in the MLB with teams like the A’s among other teams, they know that they are probably not going to be World Series contenders, but they need to fill up their stadiums, so they trade their good players for multiple lesser talented players, who are cheaper and have a few years on their contracts, so they can remain competitive every year and hope that their young players have breakout years at the same time, so they can be a World Series contender every so often. Same thing here, the Bobcats know they are not going to win the title, but they need to fill the arena and to do they need to be a competitive team.

I have witnessed time and time again.

by srdmad on Dec 10, 2008 11:27 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bell and Diaw will attract more fans than Jason Richardson?

Say that out loud and think about how terribly ridiculous it sounds…

Shawn Marion never played ‘great’ defense… He played OK defense that everybody overrated because nobody else on the Suns did…

And I don’t look at Bell as an elite defender, either… Raja Bell does not lock down anybody.

I don’t understand how expiring contracts and clearing cap space shouldn’t be that franchise’s main goal right now. And I don’t understand how they go through with this deal and GIVE UP a draft pick… Getting lucky in the draft or signing a big FA in the next two offseasons is that team’s only chance of becoming relevant any time in the near future…

But, maybe people value marginal, average players like Bell and Boris Diaw more than I do… *shrugs

Who the hell is going to want to play in Charlotte?

Doesn’t matter how much money they got, no big time player is going to go there. Are these two going to attract more fans, probably not, but this trade will make the fans that do go to their games come back, because they will be still be a competive team. Now D. J. Augustein can grow more, because Richardson isn’t there taking his shots away from him.

I have witnessed time and time again.

for nothing?

hardly… this undoubtably favors phx, but its not a gasol/garnett/artest trade by any means. In fact, I think phx is walking on pretty thin ice in a couple of areas now after doing this trade, and is not any better/worse than the Mavs are right now.

Their front court is REALLY thin now… there is no legit back up PF behind Amare, Lopez (a rookie) backs up Snaq and will see much more time at the C position on back to backs and when he gets injured this year.

Jrich is great offensively, but hardly the defensive guy Bell was. If Mr. Pringles were still coaching, this team would flourish and be really scary. But with Marion and Bell gone now, they really are left with Barnes or the injury-prone Hill as being their best defender… does that really intimidate you as an opposing team? With Porter preaching defense and wanting to implement a slower paced offense, I dont see how Jrich fills that void on their roster.

Diaw/Bell hands down is a better deal than Stackhouse/Bass/George also… even though for charlotte it was still a bad deal. What you have to hope/wonder is what MJ/Brown has in store for that team over there. Is Wallace available, and if so how and where do we sign up?

by Toddy on Dec 10, 2008 11:28 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Diaw was a legit PF?

Hardly.

Marion’s defensive abilities were terribly, terribly overrated…

by N41D on Dec 11, 2008 11:05 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And did Raja Bell really intimidate you defensively, either?

Let’s be honest, he’s not locking anyone down… He’s made his reputation defensively by chasing Kobe around and trying to play physical with him… That’s it… And Kobe still busts him for 30 on a regular basis…

by N41D on Dec 11, 2008 11:18 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I see no strategy in Phoenix anymore since they go quicker again with that move, but they win that trade

Diaw has a horrible contract, arguably one of the 25 worst in the NBA for the performance he brings. The guy peaked in the season Amare was injured as a jack of all trades, and has not returned to that performance ever since. He was stuck on the bench in Phoenix and I didn’t think they would find a taker for him. He is a mix between a power forward and a small forward, not a position of great need in Charlotte (except if they want to trade away Wallace too?) who rather should have been looking for a better center (e.g. from the Clippers) in order to move Okafor back to power forward and back him up if needed. Okafor, Diaw, Wallace is a nice lineup, but far from amazing. Phoenix can adequately replace Diaw with Lopez and Amundson.

Bell is still a pretty good player with high defensive value and a very good outside shot to replace Richardson, but also rather on the downside of his career. According to the guy who broke the news on RealGM, he was very unhappy about the changes Terry Porter implemented in Phoenix and did everything short of demanding a trade. Yet I doubt he is happy that he landed in Charlotte either, since he should look to get on a championship contender for this part of his career a la Posey. Poor Mr. Singletary is a rookie NBA journeyman, and has already been thrown into trades by the Kings, Rockets, and now Suns ;-)
At best, that is a sideways move for the Bobcats to fill their thin roster, and I really can’t see how that makes them ready to reach the playoffs.

Compared to the core of the Suns and the players they gave away (26, 32), at 27 Richardson doesn’t make them older and is still a great athlete with a solid outside shot which could be especially valuable when playing off Shaq and Amare (and with Nash). Lots of open looks. Dudley is a nice young player that could be useful one day when Hill retires. I don’t understand why Charlotte threw him in, since he was a first round pick, still on his cheap rookie contract and the deal would have worked without him.

Phoenix most glaring hole is at backup point guard at the moment, since Dragic still needs a long time to develop while Nash could use a reduction in minutes. They will focus more on offense, and maybe that brings back an identity for them which they lacked so far in the season. I like that move for them.

—-
In other news, New Orleans today got their new backup PG in Antonio Daniels. The West just got tougher again.

We’ll beat the shit out of Phoenix again anyway if they keep playing the Porter system with J-Rich.

If they switch back to up-tempo though…
