What should he have done?

This is in regards to David West tapping Dirk's cheek and Dirk choosing not to retaliate.  Should Dirk have done something at that point or was he ultimately smarter for not stooping to West's level?

Apparently the guys at TNT had a debate over this very thing (I had gone to the Magic game earlier, so I didn't see any of this) and according to what is reported on DallasBasketball.com, the TNT crew believe that Dirk should have retaliated in some way.

Does doing nothing make Dirk soft?  In my mind, no; maybe this is homer-istic of me or maybe I am biased since he is my favorite player, but I thought it was smart of him to just stand there and not fight back.  He'd already been suspended for an unintentional hard foul on Kirilenko in the regular season.  What would the league have done if he intentionally shoved or slapped West back, even though he was provoked?  The intensity during games is usually turned up several notches come playoff time, but would the referees (or the league) have taken that into account if Dirk physically responded to West's taunts?

Perhaps Dirk, team-oriented as always, was putting the team's interests foremost in his mind.  Retaliation could lead to a suspension and the team can hardly afford not to have him on the floor.

What do you think?

I think he should have at least pushed homeboy out of his face. Just to let dude know, “get out of my grill.”

Ugh...

I’ve defended Dirk to NO END in the whole “Dirk is TOO soft” debates over the years…

But, my God, I won’t be able to defend him with a straight face if someone brings that up. The guy had his hand on your cheek, basically telling you he thinks you’re soft and you won’t do anything, and you don’t do anything. Nothing. You look at him, don’t say anything, and walk off as soon as the official forces himself between you…

That’s the exact reason the Mavericks have flopped the last two years. No backbone.

The Hornets were going at Dirk all night long. Chandler was in his face and pushed him into the crowd after a whistle. David West was in his shorts, then rubbed up on his face when Dirk pushed off a bit…

The fact that none of that drew even the slightest bit of anger or reaction from Dirk bothers me… Find one other superstar in the league that would let someone push them into the crowd after a whistle and then let someone rub up on their face, and not react whatsoever?

There’s not one.

Intensity and toughness on a team starts with your best player. Unfortunately, our best player isn’t tough. He doesn’t care to react to opponents pushing him around or trying to intimidate him.

Silly.

Posturing doesn’t put anything in the win column.

Not doing something that risks a technical or a suspension is the kind of thing that smart players do.

Agreed

I’m surprised he didn’t at least swat West’s arm away, but a shove likely would have earned an ejection or suspension.

What did the 5 fingers say to the face?.....SLAP!

How can you let someone invade your space and tap you repeatedly on the face and do nothing about it?! This reminds me of The Dave Chapelle Show episode where Rick James slaps Charlie Murphy in the face. By sitting there and taking it, you send a message to the opposing team and your team…. “I’m soft”.

Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.

Soft?

It looked like Dirk just wasn’t bothered by it. He was probably happy to get under West’s skin.

no way to win when it was a loss

damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

if the mavs won, whatever he did would have been right, since they lost it will be seen as the wrong thing.

Lacking winners drive

Dirk is an incredable player during the regular season. But he lacks the ability to take it to the next level during playoff season. Dirk also relies too much on his jumpshot. Sometimes it may be better for him to drive to the basket and cause a foul, but he keeps shooting jumpers when he’s going flat. The incident that took place with West could have been handled differently. Dirk does need to show his authority on the court. I also don’t believe he would have gotten thrown out of the game for at least pushing West out of his face. But I’m an old school basketball fan. And none of the legendary great ones would have took that type of dispect. Remember the series between the Bulls and Knicks, how many times did Jordan and Sparks push each other around.

Huh?

Did you watch the 2006 playoffs? I’d say Dirk took it up a notch plenty during that run. He also had a pretty damn good game the other night. His 31 (and 10 baords) weren’t enough for you? Too bad his buddies Josh and JET decided to stay home (apologies, Josh, if your ankle is the reason you couldn’t/wouldn’t take it to the hole in the second half, though past history leads me to think otherwise).

I don't get why

Dirk got T’d up as well. West was slapping him. Something like that should get at least a 5k fine. It is SLAPPING, girls do that.

I still know how to spell Dirk, M-V-P

I don't agree with it

but I think the ref was just trying to defuse the situation without assigning blame. Plus it was a Dirk elbow that got West riled up in the first place.

It’s really not that big of a deal. If Dirk drops 35 tomorrow night, this will become a moot point.

Speaking of the game,

someone else has to make shots. Howard 4-16, Stackhouse 2-9. Those look like batting stats.

ouch

and not even good ones in Stack’s case

by MeanMr.Mustard on Apr 21, 2008 9:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Frankly

I’m of the opinion that if the referees had any control of that game, they would have ejected West in order to prevent the need for these kind of questions (and the attendant retaliation that can/will/should happen).

But that’s my general complaint about refs- they ought to be much slower to call personal fouls, and a million times quicker in calling Ts.
