Now the real drama starts...
The expectations were set so low this post-season so it's certainly a lot easier to swallow this defeat than the last two exits in 2006 and 2007.
At least they didn't go out with a whimper and made it slightly exciting there at the end. Brandon Bass made a memorable impression in game 5 to cap a fine season.
I don't want to give up on Josh Howard, but his erratic play is frustrating to watch. Avery's a good guy, but I just don't think he's the coach to lead them to their first title. I'd like to see Antoine Wright (free agent) back. Reyshawn Terry from last year's draft would also be a good addition.
Free agent players I'm pretty sure won't be back:
- Jamaal Magloire (ugh)
- Juwan Howard (his second time here didn't go so great)
- Devean George (although I'd like him back)
- J.J. Barea (has a future in the league, but not as a Mav)
- Tyronn Lue
Malik Allen's a free agent as well, but I'm not sure what the Mavs intend to do with him. I like his attitude, and he's a pretty good all-around player.
Corey Maggette can opt out this summer, and the Mavs should really pursue him (as they did last summer in a proposed trade involving JET). He's only 28 and knows how to attack the rim.
We're going to see at least 1/2 the roster change over the off-season. Maybe we pick up Diop.... Anyway, they'll be plenty of time to speculate since the Mavs couldn't even extend the playoffs into May.

Scorched Earth
Find a way to get rid of everyone except Dirk and Bass. Absolutely everyone else was a huge disappointment this series.

To be fair
JET showed up this series, and I’ve been really hard on him this year (mostly because he deserved it).

True...
but the number one rule of investing is… sell high.
I appreciate everything Terry did for us, but if he is the key for us dumping his contract and getting the likes of Corey… I am all for it.
Now if Maggette gets here and gets finely/howard/walker/stack-ish on us, which is a high possibility given the trend of players who begin their careers as slashers, then fall farther and farther from the rim… it will be a bust because I think Terry has a better shot than him.

Disagree.
Why on earth would you want Devean George back? That guy is awful, I want to vomit every time he enters a game. I know he can play defense, and he hit a couple of big shots tonight… Before tonight, can you remember (without looking it up) when the last time he had more than 4 points? I don’t think he is a very good ‘locker room’ guy either.
Hopefully for the Mavs, we don’t have to endure another year of 1 for 7 stat lines from George.
I really hope Tyronn Lue comes back… I think he, Bass, and Kidd (smirk) were the best additions this year.
I have absolutely given up on Josh Howard, but I don’t think he is going anywhere.
Cuban won’t sit on his hands this off-season, and I think Avery will be the first to go. I’m not sure how I feel about yet…
Never too early to start talking about next year! Besides what am I going to do until Football starts again? Watch Baseball?

Kidd will be back next year
And I actually hope he ends his career as a Maverick. I think he is a great asset in helping us mentor a young point guard, kinda like he did with Nash back in Phx in the 90s. Now obviously he owes us, and cant be seriously expecting us to give him 20 mil again, but I think a 2-3 year extension at about the 4-6 mil a year range to help us develop a young guy would be great for us… Remember Stockon played until his late 30s also. I think though he will need to have that knee looked at though before any commitment from cuban can be made.
Obviously we hope he does not teach him how to shoot and how to handle his personal life… but having the court vision that he has would be huge for a young guy. Look at what kidd has already done with ALL our current players. His passing and play-making abilities can be contagious when not being confined by a limited offensive “system” that we ran.

You beat me too this post...
But David Lord broke down the reality of the Mavs here a few weeks back. It aint pretty guys.
SUMMER SHOPPING – A QUICK GLANCE AHEADThe Mavs will go into the summer with only seven players locked up for next season; all five starters (Dampier, Nowitzki, Josh Howard, Stackhouse, Kidd) plus two key reserves (Terry, Bass).
The status of the other eight players will be as follows:
Jones – player option for another year at about $2M.
George – Mavs will have Early Bird rights to sign him or to use him in a sign-and-trade; despite Cuban’s past protests, given the need to fill up so many roster slots, the Mavs may be wise to keep their options open here
Wright – a fourth-year player whose option was declined, he will be an unrestricted free agent, and if both sides want him to return, the Mavs will have the ability to offer him up to that declined option amount (about a 30% raise) without using MLE money
Barea – restricted free agent, Mavs will have Early Bird rights
Magloire, Allen, Lue, Juwan Howard – all four veterans are coming off one-year minimum salary contracts and the Mavs will have to use MLE money if they want to offer more than a minimum salary contract to keep any of themThe Mavs’ priorities in free agency will be affected by how the current roster plays through the playoffs and which of their free agents want to stay here. Isn’t there also going to be a glaring need for a second center from somewhere else this summer, if Magloire doesn’t discover the fountain of youth?
Based on what we’ve seen so far, we’d definitely love to see Allen, Lue, and even Wright back for at least another year. That still leaves a whole boatload of decisions to make to fill up the roster.
The worst news about all this? Bass is the up and coming star on this team, and it doesnt look like we will be able to hold on to him after next year. At 22 years old, we are losing such a young asset who has played better than all the senior citizen veterans we had on this team.
BRANDON BASS FUTUREAs Bass develops, we offer a cautionary contractual note.
He is on a two-year contract and becomes a free agent in the summer of 2009. Unfortunately, at that point, due to CBA limits the Mavs will only have the ability to offer him a deal that starts at Mid-Level (MLE) money using what is known as the Early Bird cap exception for players with 2 years of consecutive service. The MLE will likely be around $6M, meaning a team with more cap room than that could outbid the Mavs for his ongoing services.
Perhaps a multi-year deal starting at $6M (and raises) will be enough. Or perhaps he would sign a one-year deal for that $6M, getting the Mavs to 3 years of service and the ability to then offer in the summer of 2010 any contractual amount using the full Bird rights that kick in after 3 years.
But the better he gets, the harder it may be to keep him.
Avery, if this shows you anything, its that younger guys CAN play significant roles on this team, if you allow them.

Bring back Wright, Allen, and George...
Tell everyone else to kick rocks…
Tell Eddie Jones if he decides to return that he’ll have little to no role on this team next year.
Found this on another board… Not sure how accurate it is, but it’s somewhat comforting…
Anyways, like a ton of people have said, the Mavs should be able to rebuild on the fly relatively easily. If things aren’t going well early in the year, Kidd’s 21 million dollar expiring will be a SERIOUS asset at some point 8 months from now. Jerry Stackhouse’s contract turns into an 8 million dollar expiring the following summer, and I believe the last year of Dampier’s deal is non-guaranteed, making it essentially an 11 million dollar expiring after next season… If they can’t move Howard now, and decide to cut ties with him later, there’s a team option on the last year of his deal, so he’s another potential expiring after next season…
So really at most, if Cuban went that route and did it thing right, it’s about a 2 year process to completely rebuild.

Trade
It will be hard to do much trading in the West and with playoff teams, so here’s a proposal – Kidd, Howard and Bass to Milwaukee for Redd, Bogut and Williams. I would hate to lose Bass, but we have to give up some value. Maybe the Kidd expiring contract and the chance to match Kidd with Yi will entice them to do it.

What about
Kidd, Howard and Bass to Denver for Carmelo, Camby, Hunter and Atkins?
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=274520064291975261251002&teams=77~766~66&te=&cash=
Denver might deal Melo, and they could do worse than getting two stars (loosely counting Kidd as a star, roll with me), one with an expiring deal, plus Bass. This would give the Mavs another star scorer, plus a defensive stopper in the frontcourt to take pressure off Damp. Hunter and Atkins are obviously just to make the cap space work, but they could be servicable off our bench.

I live in Wisconsin I know how good Redd is.
I think he would great for this team. A pure shooting guard and an actual legit all star to match with Dirk. On realgm.com I found that Howard, Stackhouse, and Jones would work for Redd, but Jones can’t be traded, because of a restriction, so we would have to do a sign and trade with someone(Devean George?).
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?

Dallas has already tried to get Redd once before.
So it’s safe to assume that Donnie probably likes him.

When was this? When he was a free agent in 05?

Nash, Redd, Finley, Dirk.
That would have been a great starting lineup.
