Want Him or Don't Want Him: Dirk Nowitzki
| Contract Status | ||
| Year | $$$$ | Age @ End of Season |
| 08/09 | $18,077,904 | 30 |
| 09/10 | $19,795,714 | 31 |
| 10/11 | $21,513,524 (player option) | 32 |
I figured we would get the obvious (or it should be anyway) one out of the way first.
Case for: He's Dirk. He's the best player on the team. And in a league where you usually can't win a title without a top ten player on your team, it might not be a good idea to get rid of one.
Case against: Losing > Winning?

Mostly because
law school means I only have time to follow one sport. Plus, living in DC means that it requires quite a bit of effort to follow a Dallas sports team. Honestly, I couldn’t even tell you who the starting rotation was at this point.
Oh well. I should be back in Tx soon, and then I’ll pick them up.

I'd light myself on fire if we traded Dirkles
He’s by far my favorite professional athlete ever.
And besides all the basketball reasons (and there are MANY of those), I just plain like the guy. I’m glad he’s on my team and I want him here for as long as he wants to be here.

OT: Brandon Bass
I can’t find out exactly what his contract situation is.
I didn’t want to start a whole new thread on this, but I’m interested seeing as how he was usually the second best player we put on the floor toward the end of the season.

bass is under contract next year for $826 thousand. he will be an unrestricted free agent next summer…. a cold chill just went up my spine.
by bass_the_beast on May 2, 2008 6:01 PM CDT 0 recs
Thanks
The site I looked at said this was his only season, but I figured it was wrong cause if Bass was an unrestricted FA this off season we’d have heard about it by now.

The FO is going
to have to get pretty creative if we want to keep him after this year… That’s why I almost say we sell high right now. I love Bass to death, but realistically it might be hard to keep him after next year, and if we let him go for nothing, because we cant sign him to a big enough deal, then we shoot ourselves in the foot again.

Why couldn't we sign him to a big enough deal?
He’s been in the league more than two years now, and he’s been with us for two, so we own his complete Bird rights, no?
And even if we don’t, as much as I love Bass as an energy-hustle-banger guy, is he really the kind of guy you see a team spending more than the full mid-level exemption to bring in? Cause no matter what we’d be able to match the mid-level if we wanted to.
That being said… I like your idea of selling high on him. If adding him to a Josh/Stack package allows us to bring in a serious secondary scoring threat, you pretty much have to do it, right?

He will have been with us for two…. meaning at the end of next season we;ll own his Bird rights.

I bet,
they take the same approach as we did last summer…
“well we won 66 games…”
But who knows, but they feel like they need a overrated point guard to put them over, and we can send kidd to them for Rondo, Perkins, and a couple of first rounders!

I know this sound crazy, but Terry plus about a million dollars for Marcus Camby works.
Those first round picks would come in handy here.

Report: Nuggets likely to trade Camby
Kenyon Martin and Nene are close to untradeable. It would be stunning if the Nuggets dealt Carmelo Anthony. And any trade of Allen Iverson, who would be attractive because of his expiring contract, would be an admission the blockbuster December 2006 trade didn’t work. A source said Marcus Camby is the most likely big-dollar player to be dealt. But with Nene’s health not a total certainty as he returns from testicular cancer, that could create a big void in the post. —Rocky Mountain News

Sorry.
He’s worth much more elsewhere than in Dallas, and the multiple players you could get for him will advance the rebuilding effort by a couple of years. Admit that this team as currently structured is a tire fire and start over.
by Nyghtewynd on May 2, 2008 6:20 PM CDT 0 recs
?
This is nearly the exact same team that won 67 games two years ago, and won 50+ this year despite obvious chemistry/coach issues post-trade. If that’s “tire fire” then I don’t know what a good team looks like.

Honestly
a good team looks like the 2006 squad… where you had Devin+Josh+Dirk all playing well together at once.
That didnt happen in the 2007 playoffs, and definitely didnt happen at the beginning of this season (devin and josh were playing well, but dirk wasnt), nor the end (Dirk by himself, kidd and Josh were in la-la land). Its why the Spurs have been good. Those three rotate in superstar play, while the others consistently play consistent… even on their off nights. Its what we were missing this year.

Well, if we don't trade guys then we have to sign guys.
Problem is, I don’t think guys like Josh Smith, Luol Deng, and Allen Iverson would want to come off the bench.
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?
by srdmad on May 2, 2008 7:20 PM CDT 0 recs
Smith and Deng
IF some miracle happens where we were ever to sign these guys… Josh Howard would move down to the 2 and we’d have one of the best starting 5 (assuming Josh howard humbles himself this summer to realize that he needs to stop sucking) with Kidd, J5, smith/deng, Dirk and Damp.
But I doubt we could sign either of these guys without doing a sign and trade deal.

Dirk
Is the quintissential example of a player who ought to, if there is a god, play his entire career with one team. It’s not like he’s Garnett, and wasting away in a basketball purgatory.

I seriously hope
he ends his career here. I was kinda upset when we let finely go, because of the huge hole he pulled us out of in the 90s… but in what was best for both him and the team, I’m glad he left and got his ring. He definitely deserves it. I hope Dirk doesnt end up like the Malones/Barkley’s in the league trying to find his way to a championship if he doesnt get one now though…

Dirk is a franchise player. Through high and low times, he’s the type of player you try to keep. The Mavericks would only be starting from scratch without him and it would take another decade to become somewhat of an elite team again, since losing two playoff first rounds dropped them out of the category.
Keep Dirk, build team around Kidd. If anyone is to go, trade Josh Howard if he’s still putting up bricks and can’t adjust to a new point guard’s playing style.

Really, chill
If you had bothered to read the post before, you would see that Wes is going to do this for every player and front office exec. Cubes said that nobody’s safe, and while I don’t quite believe that, after the complete disasters that have been the playoffs these last two years you have to think that there’s some truth to the matter.
I’d imagine that Wes will ask the same question about Donnie, and that answer ought to be just as overwhelming.

Dirk
With my MMB name, it goes without saying that I want him on the Mavs until the day he decides to hang them up. The guy’s just reached his peak, and I’m looking forward to him playing with Kidd for a full year. He really seemed re-energized and happy after the trade (with the stats to prove it), and hopefully we’ll get a coach who won’t try to turn him into something he isn’t. However, Avery did make Dirk a better (not great) defender and deserves credit there.

Get rid of Dirk? Yeah right. And watch a quarter of your fanbase and all of your championship chances go up in smoke.
