Vince Carter Available?

Via the Star-Ledger

"The Nets made big news Thursday night when they traded Richard Jefferson to the Milwaukee Bucks. But before that deal was finalized, New Jersey had an offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers: Wally Szczerbiak for Vince Carter. Nets management thought long and hard about it."

As much as I would hate to do a deal again with NJ, it has to be at least looked at.  Carter, 31, is the same age as Terry, but his contract would put us in a nightmare of a Salary Cap choke hold through the 2010-2011 season (which is still one season less than what Terry is signed too).  Not sure though why NJ would do this deal, except that NJ would have 7 million (Stack) come of their books this next year, but would have Terry for one year longer than they would have Carter.

But from a Mavs perspective,  would VC > JET and Stack?

The last thing this team needs...

Is another no-heart, soft as a baby’s bottom volume shooter that chokes on his own saliva come playoff time…

"Chokes on his own saliva come playoff time."

Just like we did right?

That's why I said...

the last thing this team needs is another player like him… ? Or did you not read?

What I meant by that

was that he can’t be much worse than what we did. He drives to the basket and is very hard to defend. He could force teams not to double Dirk all the time.

But I also want us to have a somewhat low salary after the 2009-2010 season,

so we have a chance at signing the big names that might be available. I don’t think we should make moves so that our salary is really low, because if we don’t get any of those guys, then the moves that we would have made would be for nothing, so do we take a chance and lower our salary, hoping that these guys don’t sign contract extensions and then hoping that they sign with us, or do we take a chance with Carter and win now? If we did trade for Carter, his contract, Dampier’s, and Howard’s would all be up, and there is always good players in free agency, so I say let’s do it.

To get Carter

would mean we are definitely in the WIN NOW mode… which I am not opposed too… but I dont know if Carter would be the right fit. By doing the Carter for Terry and Stack deal, it would free up 7 million for them on the cap to throw at LBJ, which has to be appealing to them. But I bet they could get a better deal done somewhere else, with someone who has an expiring contract after this next season.

On the other hand, I agree though, I would like us to be able to go after bosh or lbj after that season.

I wouldn't want to do this deal, if we could get guys like Diop or Jamaal Tinsley.

Do minor adjustments on the team and also setting them up for the class of 2010-2011, but being over the cap, it would be hard to make an offer better than what some of the other teams could offer, which is way I say do a blockbuster deal.

Well...

I just don’t think adding a guy known for playoff disappearing acts and having a severe lack of leadership skills to a team that already struggles to get it done in the playoffs is a good idea, regardless of what his abilities may be…

Only when

playing for a new contract.

by jonthefon on Jun 29, 2008 1:42 AM CDT up reply actions

or perhaps

with a new team… like he did his first 2 years in NJ

Dirk and an inspired Vince Carter,

I would take that over Dirk and, um, who exactly is our second best player?

kidd VC Howard Dirk Damp/Diop

I’d take that…....we need someone who can drive the lane….period…..

If we get Carter without giving up Howard, and fill out this bench…..I’d be ok with this offseason….
