What to do with the MLE?
Espn is reporting that the Jazz have made a qualifying offer to the Resricted Free Agent CJ Miles, meaning that if he choses, he can test the waters of the FA to get a better deal done, but that the Jazz could match any deal offered...
What that essentially means (I think) to us, is that should we go after him, we would essentially have to over pay what he is worth to get him (3 yrs, 5 mil per year, essentially using up all the MLE). I think that us using up our all the MLE to get any significant player, whether it be Diop, Miles, ect. is going to be necessary.
But as it stands, what should the MLE be used for? A center, who some Mavs sources said could actually start over the 11 million center we currently have, or be used on what has been the biggest hole in this teams rotation for the past 4 years?

A SG,
we managed with just Dampier after we traded Diop. If we got a SG, we could trade Terry.
The talent that is Josh Hamilton.

If that worse contract is Vince Carter than I'm doing that trade.

I tend to agree
both players are the same age, terry and Carter that is, and to me VC > JET + Stack

Maggette
is looking to sign with the Magic for JUST THE MLE…
Maggette has until today to opt out of the final year of his contract for $7 million and become an unrestricted free agent Tuesday. Under salary-cap rules, the Magic have only the middle-class exception of $5.8 million to offer him in the first year of a deal. The Magic could build a five-year deal worth close to $40 million.
Its a long shot, but the Mavs should by doing everything with in their power to be going after this guy for the MLE

another possible
One intriguing possibility is restricted free agent Monta Ellis, whom the Knicks could offer only the mid-level exception or acquire in a sign-and-trade. Ellis is intrigued by Mike D’Antoni’s wide-open system but is more of a scorer than a ball-mover. He averaged only 1.82 assists-to-turnovers per possession last season.

Artest update
looks like he wont be opting out...
Opting out makes little financial sense for Artest. The Lakers, for example, might be able to offer a shot at the title, but they would be restricted to a midlevel exception offer (approximately $6 million per season) for a contract – a plight shared by most of the league. Artest’s agent, Mark Stevens, said it was “obvious” opting out would result in a midlevel exception deal.If Artest opts out, the Kings, who hold Artest’s Bird rights, could execute a sign-and-trade deal in which he can sign a sixyear deal rather than the maximum five with other teams.
In an e-mail to The Bee last week, Artest sounded as if the allure of joining a title contender was enough to lose money. “I never knew so many teams would be coming after me,” he wrote. “All I can say is I made a (big) turnaround.”
Yet after the exchange with Artest, Stevens reiterated opting out remains unlikely. He was asked about a recentNewYork Post column that reported Artest would opt out.

I'd probably say shooting guard.
I’m not a huge CJ Miles fan but I think that might be because I get him and Darius Miles confused.
