Jones picks up option...

Over at DMN blog Sefko reports that Eddie Jones picked up his $2 million option for this year. AND reports that we will see something happening with Devean George in the next couple days. All I have to say is UGGGGHHHHHHH...

I pretty much new that Eddie Jones was gonna pick up his option (I mean its a no-brainer...who else would pay the old man 2 mil a year?). But this is getting pretty tiring...I know its been fairly quiet with people commenting and posting on Mavsmoneyball (its the offseason and all) but is anyone else really coming to the conclusion that we need to start fresh or something?? I really wouldn't want to be Donnie Nelson right now but this is not looking ver promising...even with a new coach we have to be delusional if we think this team is a top 3-4 team in the Western Conference. I am almost starting to agree with all the pessimists out there that we should start fresh and trade either Dirk, J-Kidd, JET, J-Ho, and Damp. I really don't know what else can be done to get people excited about the Mavs right now...I for one right now am not looking forward to another disappointing Mavs season...I really think that I am starting to lose years off my life by being a fan of this team (and I am only 24!!)

What's keeping me sane...

So many people blasted the Cowboys for their “awful” offseason when it was still way too early in the game. Now, they look pretty damn good. I’m not saying this is exactly how it’ll happen for the Mavs, but I put a ton of faith in Donnie and Cuban. I’m also one that loves the Carlisle selection and what a new system can do for the core players.

Put it this way, I don’t think the Mavs are simply sitting idle and hoping things work out with the Jones’ and George’s of the world. I think this is a long process and whether it be MLE/summer league findings or trades, I think I’ll be pretty content, if not happy, with the Mavs roster going into the season. Just my two cents…

Content was the feeling I think we felt going into last season, when we had many positives to look back on, and call our early playoff exit “a fluke”...

Content is NOT the feeling we will feel, nor SHOULD we feel, if we enter this next season with the same guys 1-9, and a few tweaks of the 10-15 guys that wont see a lick of significant PT.

Just my opinion.

Yeah

Its fair too say that the best thing to come of this is that his contract is trade bait. Add his 2 million dollar EXPIRING contract to Stacks (7 Million) and that gives us 9 million of expiring contracts to go after someone in a sign and trade deal this summer. (cough cough Maggette cough cough)

Im ok with with this signing, as long as Jones never see’s a mavs uniform again… in the sense that he will be traded.

George on the other hand is tricky. I think what he gets will depend on what is leftover from the Diop deal. Unless he can be resigned without us touching the MLE, I am strictly against this deal. Even if he is signed though, what exactly is he bringing to the team other than a body? He was my whipping stick last year for this team… though he had some moments where he looked decent (April PHX game)... but is it worth his up and down play as oppossed to that of a younger guys up and down play… who could get better? Im not against guys like Stack, Finley, Jones, Posey, ect… but your entire bench cant be composed of them. Thats what we had and relied upon last year, and that is one of the many reason which held us back.

My main concern here is that if in fact we bring back basically the same crew we did last year and make no moves this summer, how are the Mavs FO going to sell us that this is the best squad we have ever had routine yet again that we have heard year after year? I am just not seeing the Mavericks in the mix of things, unless something is mixed up… If the FO wants to stick with the big 3, change the roll players. If they want to move on of the big 3 and keep these roll players, fine… But please just do SOMETHING… not just change the coach.

Great Point..

Your last point is exactly what I am fearing…There is no way in hell the Mavs FO can get the fans excited about having the EXACT same team as last year. Even with Carlise as the coach…just wont happen. It will be SO hard for me to get excited about this same team next season. Now if somehow Donnie can pull a sign and trade out of his ass with the Clippers and Maggette we might have something here. If the Clips would bite on a Damp for Maggette or maybe they’ll totally lose their minds and do a JET for Maggette sign and trade…that would be awesome.

I just don’t feel any of this will be accomplished…I do like the optimism though…so thanks for that.

will never happen, but JET very well could. But if we sign and trade for Maggette though, he will bring in anywhere in the 10-12 million dollar per year range, much like the contract Jamison just got. So just JET wont get that done… this is where Jones expiring contract may come into play… to off set that.

Still though, I think the Clipps would really have to WANT JET, and if Davis or Arenas heads there, then we can forget swapping maggette for JET.
