Sam Amick: Mavs offer Bass and Stackhouse for Artest

Yet another internet rumor that gets our hopes up, only to let them back down again... But at least we are trying, and that counts for something... right?

According to a source close to Dallas, the Mavs have offered Brandon Bass and Jerry Stackhouse for the Kings small forward. The chatter was first reported by Hoopsworld here, but I've independently confirmed the pieces in the offer. Stackhouse has a contract that's almost identical to Artest's ($7.4 million, expiring for Artest; $7 million expiring for Stackhouse), and Bass is a young beast of a big man who comes at the bargain price of $826,269 (also expiring). I can't even come close to seeing Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie doing this deal, not unless Josh Howard is involved.
And from what I'm told, that's not going to happen. As the Mavs see it, the perceived risk of taking Artest is acceptable so long as the price of getting him is Bass and Stackhouse. Lose Howard to get Artest, though, and the gamble is too great. As is always the case, though, things could change.

LOL

There’s no way that gets it done…

Least it shows they’re trying though, and I guess it’s a starting point…

Anyone but Bass!

It would be a shame to give up our most promising young player. However, the Mavs FO may feel it will be unable to re-sign him after his current contract expires. If that’s the case and they are intending to cut their losses now, it would still be horrible to lose such a beast.

No…no it doesn’t.

Screw Artest.

I would not trade this guy for anything. If you are going to trade for a small forward then trade for Josh Smith.

The dynasty that should be the Arizona Diamondbacks.

ESPN Reporting the Kings Countered...

Howard for Artest and some type of filler, and Dallas hung up. Doesn’t seem like a match.

however much baggage

However much baggage people think Josh has, Artest has so much more and much more serious baggage. He has Adam Jones-type problems, except their asking the Mavs to give up serious collateral for him. I don’t like it…

Adam Jones type problems?

The type where he’s never been convicted of anything, ever, during his professional career?

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

which?

Which hasn’t been convicted of anything?

Besides, when is that the ultimate judge of whether or not a player has too much baggage around them? They’ve both been arrested and both served significant suspensions. That’s enough for me to throw up red flags. I think the AJ deal was OK because the cowboys didn’t really give up very much. the mavs be giving up a starting player.

Josh for Artest straight up?

I would do that.

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

I do it

clearly the formula isn’t working with Dirk & Josh. You try one time with Artest/Dirk/Kidd. If it fails, Artest, Howard and Kidd are free agents after this year and you still have Dirk + Bass.

I like that idea...

It doesn't matter if you win or lose, as long as you come in first.
