OT: The Dark Knight
So I guess early reports are, that its setting new weekend and single day records.
"The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007 and pacing Hollywood to its biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.
"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight." The movie should shoot past the $200 million mark by the end of the week, he said.
I saw it on the IMAX, and thought it was really good. Definitely the best Batman movie. Not to give away too much about the story or movie, but I really appreciated them going away from the "My parents died, so I need to become Batman" theme they have done in just about every Batman movie.
Ledger was awesome BTW.
So feel free to comment on it here, but without spoiling it for those who havent seen it yet.

Haven't seen it yet
Waiting until it dies down a bit or until I can’t hold off any longer and settle to watch it in a regular theatre instead of IMAX. Also looking forward to seeing the Watchmen trailer on the big screen instead of on my laptop.

Ho. Ly. Shit.
Just amazing. I saw it twice in the first 24 hours of release.
The first real thought I have about it is that THIS movie ought to have been “Batman Begins. This was really the story of how Bruce Wayne really becomes Batman, rather than just any other superhero.
And it’s also amazing to go into the theater with completely unrealistic expectations for Ledgers performance, and then having them exceeded.

You definitely hit the nail on the head with this. With such poor performances in almost all his other movies, I really was skeptical about him being The Joker. He was really spectacular. And boy, was Jack Nickolas wrong.
MTV: What do you think of another actor, Heath Ledger, playing the Joker in next summer’s “The Dark Knight”?Nicholson: Let me be the way I’m not in interviews. I’m furious. I’m furious. [He laughs.] They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that! Nobody ever asked me.
MTV: It was never brought up?
Nicholson: No. It’s like, in any area, you can’t believe the reasons things do or don’t happen. Not asking me how to do the sequel is that kind of thing. Maybe it’s not a mistake. Maybe it was the right thing, but to be candid, I’m furious.
MTV: I’m surprised to hear you sounding competitive about a role like that.
Nicholson: Well, the Joker comes from my childhood. That’s how I got involved with it in the first place. It’s a part I always thought I should play.

It's funny
Nicholson was so awesome as the Joker, it was like no one could’ve played that part any better. But after The Dark Knight, Ledger IMO has officially become the Joker. I don’t think anyone will ever top that performance. For a Batman movie, this couldn’t have been any better. I had a feeling this one was gonna shatter some records…

Transcendent, epic, magnificent, awe-inspiring, heart-stopping,
Revolutionary, groundbreaking,
Effing fantastic.
Seriously, I haven’t seen a better movie since the Shawshank Redemption.
And Ledger’s Joker may have usurped Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs and claimed the title of Creepiest, Most Chilling VIllain Ever.

Most Chilling Ever
That’s my opinion. He’s just, amazing. It’s scary, it’s demented, it’s serious and dark. The best line is “I’m like a dog chasing a car, I wouldn’t know what to do with it when I caught it.” And I think that’s what makes him so scary. He’s just doing it because he enjoys it, without a real plan- just an agenda.
One more thought. What’s Alfred’s back story? Is that something that’s developed more fully in the comics? Because based on the story about the forest, I’m intrigued if maybe we don’t get more of him or another tie in in the next one.

Ledger...
Best super-villain performance ever… The way he portrays the sick, sadistic side of the Joker, while at the same time having the audience laughing at the mannerisms and nuances of the character is absolutely incredible… He played that role to perfection… Definitely an Oscar-worthy performance, and a hell of a way for an extremely talented young actor to go out… With the third Batman film in this series already being rumored and talked about, I’m really hoping Chris Nolan retires the Joker and leaves the part to Ledger out of respect… And, frankly, I think you’re going to have a damn hard time selling an audience on the Joker if it isn’t Heath Ledger. Let Heath take that part to the grave with him, because as far as I’m concerned, that’s his part. I wouldn’t be able to take another actor seriously in that role… RIP Heath…
Bale is signed on for a third film so long as Nolan is back in the Director’s seat… Gotta think The Riddler is gonna be the villain in a third installment, which I really think has a load of potential… CGI and technology being what they are in the film industry these days, Riddler could be something to really look forward to…
Question is, who plays The Riddler? I’ve seen a ton of speculation that says with the way Nolan has steered away from some of the more “traditional” details of the past Batman series, he could go away from the Edward Nygma alias, and have Riddler played by a different character… Possibly Reese the accountant from Wayne Enterprises who discovered Batman’s identity in Dark Knight? I’ve read that rumor, but I just cannot see that role being handed to an actor with relatively no track record, so I doubt it’s a real option. But then you wonder if that’s the case, why even have the whole scene about revealing Batman’s identity in the first place?. I dunno, but all I can say is after seeing Dark Knight twice this weekend, I’m already looking forward to the third installment of the new Batman series…
And am I the only person that thinks Maggie Gyllenhall is absolutely hideous? They couldn’t find a more attractive actress to play Rachel?

She's not ugly
Just not a hot. I think most of us would be quite pleased with landing that.
But yeah, I’m surprised they couldn’t find a talented, good-looking actress to play a part in this movie.

Bane
Loved the movie and hope the next one features the villain Bane.
Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!

It'll probably be the Riddler primarily
Although It’ll be odd to follow up the Joker with the Riddler.
They’ll likely factor in a complementary villain (Bane, Scarecrow; don’t even rule out Two-Face-regardless of the developments in this movie, which I won’t discuss for obvious spoiling reasons).
If Bane does make the cut, I propose Shawne Merriman to play the role.

Merriman the juicer playing a juiced villain would be funny. I was thinking more of the Rock myself.

I wonder if Scarecrow doesn't get a larger role...
He gets a short cameo in this one in the beginning of the movie, and he’s seen on the prisoner’s boat at the end of Dark Knight… He could play a larger role, but he wouldn’t be my first choice…
Riddler and Bane would be nice, and I think I’m one of the relatively few people that would enjoy seeing Mr Freeze come back, so long as he isn’t played by Schwarzenegger LOL…

Freeze is too implausible
Nolan’s staying away from the really wacky, over the top characters. He’s nixed Robin and the Penguin already.

I think Scarecrow had his run in Batman Begins
so I don’t know if he’ll be coming back or not. I think it’s odd though, the last scene with the Joker is him dangling from whatever it was after his scuffle with Batman. It’s hard to see him go out like that with no idea of what happens to him next. But I don’t see the Joker coming back in the next film, so what do I know…I’ve even heard rumors of a potential Batman vs. Superman movie? Any thoughts???

Batman vs. Superman...

Would be nice, but I had heard the idea was nixed… It’d have a ton of potential if they kept up the dark, troubled themes for Batman that they’ve done with Begins and Dark Knight… And they’d have to get Christopher Nolan to direct… Just not sure how you intertwine those two stories, though.

There's a rumor floating around
That the ending was actually revamped after Ledger died. If so, that’s the best impromptu shift in plotline ever.

I'll quote Chuck Klosterman from Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs
The idea of making a sophisticated movie that could be brilliant and commercially massive is almost unthinkable, and that schism is relatively new. In the early seventies, The Godfather films made tons of money, won bushels of Academy Awards, and - most notably - were anecdotally regarded as damn-near perfect by every non-Italian tier of society, both intellectually and emotionally. They succeeded in every dimension. That could never happen today; interesting movies rarely earn money and Oscar winning movies are rarely better than good.
Dark Knight did it.
