It could be worse...
If you thought the re-signing of George was bad, just replace the C with an M in the word "Cavs" from this note at Hoopsworld, and Mavs fans around the world would have all simultaneously dropped dead.
Cavs Getting Desperate?
A report from the Cleveland Plain Dealer has linked the Cleveland Cavaliers to free agent forward Juwan Howard. They cite his numbers from Houston two years ago - 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in 27 minutes per game - and label him "productive." At 35, Howard is not exactly going to improve, and frankly he's one of the least productive players in the league regardless of what his numbers are. He doesn't defend, doesn't rebound well, and brings very little to the game beyond just what the box score says. There's a reason he sat at the very, very end of the Mavericks' bench last season.

Miami used pretty much the same reasons to sign Magloire
Veteran players with a recognizable name unfortunately tend to get overvalued a lot. See this good and funny recent article by Kelly Dwyer on the subject.
The Mavs are one of the teams falling into this trap time and time again, like with the re-signing of George. If you look at our depths chart it looks like some basketball operations intern drew it up, and the last thing we needed was another small forward/shooting guard type, an aging one to boost. Unfortunately I fear it was the GM himself, though it’s hard to understand the reasoning behind it. I keep wondering how the conversation with Mark went, like this?
Donnie Nelson: Yeah, uhm, Mark, I talked to coach Carlisle, and we think we need more small forwards.
Mark Cuban: I just bought you Gerald Green, and James Singleton, and extended Antoine Wright who can play both positions.
Donnie: And I am grateful for that. But you know, they are unproven and Green is a slight head case, so I want some veterans around him.
Cuban: Like who?
Donnie: I want to bring back Devean George.
Cuban: George? The dude is old, can’t consistently defend anyone, doesn’t hit his shots anymore.
Donnie: Yes, I know. But he won championships with the Lakers
Cuban: He blocked my grandiose trade for Jason Kidd that will win us championships
Donnie: Uhuh (thinks: whatever you say)
Cuban: That cost me $11 million to bring back Van Horn out of retirement to finally get it done. And so I really hate his agent!
Donnie: Can I offer him 2 years, 4.2 million?
Cuban: Yeah why not. Give him a player option for the second year, too.
Donnie: Consider it done, boss
Cuban: Oh, and tell Carlise to make the training camp very hard. Maybe at least we get rid of Eddie Jones that way. Boy what a wasted exception. Now leave me alone while I buy me some Cubs.
Odenied: Asked whether he noticed Oden favoring his right knee, Frye dismissed it entirely. "He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors."
