Diop traded?

I got a text from cbs11 saying that the Mavs are close to trading Diop to the Bobcats for Matt Carroll and Ryan Hollins. I haven't seen anything else on any other sites, as it's probably just developing. Here are the player profile's from nba.com.

Matt Carroll

Ryan Hollins

The Ticket

Just chimed in with the same report

Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.

Carroll

He’s cheaper, and his contract goes down in price ever year, which is really weird for an NBA contract.

Obvious salary dump, good move to unload such a terrible contract.

by jthig32 on Jan 16, 2009 5:22 PM CST reply actions

That is really weird

I don’t think I’ve seen a contract like that ever.

by ptrck on Jan 16, 2009 6:15 PM CST up reply actions

Paxson loves them

Hinirch, Nocioni, and Ben Wallace all have decreasing contracts.

e.g. http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages/data/salaries/bulls.jsp

It’s clearly helpful for the team since you spend your cap money when you have it anyway, and down the road the player is easier to trade. For the player, it’s definitely a better deal than an increasing deal for the same total amount. However, if the player is signing a max deal (or a full MLE), the contract can’t be structured this way. I’m not really sure why more contracts aren’t done this way. Any ideas?

Well

at least Carroll can shoot a three…he’s a destitute man’s Mike Miller.

Would’ve preferred Felton though.

for this team, we needed the shooter

for the future, Felton would be nice.

I'd like to agree

but it’s so hard for me to give up…I like this team even more as an “outside shot to make the playoffs” underdog, sadly, as far as my natural instincts go.

Messed up?

Howard would have been involved for Felton.

Three-way deal
Raymond Felton, Nazr Mohammed and Sean May from Charlotte to Dallas, landed Earl Watson and Dallas’ DeSagana Diop with the Bobcats and shipped Jerry Stackhouse to the Thunder along with a future second-round pick.

From the “Raymond Felton a Mav?” thread. The supposed deal.

Howard

was not involved.

But Stack’s contract would have been sent, and possible Bass.

Plus Felton is a restricted free agent this summer. You’d have had to be prepared to commit pretty decent money to him to keep him.

by jthig32 on Jan 16, 2009 11:28 PM CST up reply actions

Best case scenario with this trade

Carroll COULD end up being our version of Kyle Korver, which would be nice. As for Hollins…I don’t know anything about the guy.

Yeah,

Man ...

When I saw that “Bobcats add to froncourt, get Diop from Mavs” at espn I thought we had get Felton in some sort of trade. But then I found out that we traded for Carrol and Hollins. Obviously it may be a good move for the money, but waiting all that much for a trade and find that we got a shooter that can’t shoot, it’s pretty depressive. For god, this guy is at 26% this year. Unless he regain his old form, that will be more of the same. We already have a lot of shooters that can’t shoot. I really, really hope this is only the start and that they will be packed somewhere in other deal. But if this thing is what they will have to show us after that dismal season … I’m done with it. The bobcats were the only team dumb enough to get Diop’s contract and we couldn’t get a little more? Just a question, but wouldn’t it be better to get Adam Morrison? I know he sucks, but Carrol is not that far behind, and Adam’s contract was better because he finishes sooner. I’m just pissed, I hoped for felton for so much time. But I still have faith that we can trade something like Howard + Stack and Williams for Wallace and Felton. Let’s see.

by hugommorais on Jan 16, 2009 6:29 PM CST reply actions

Playing with Kidd

should get Carroll better looks. he hit 50% of his threes in 18 games as a starter last year.

Don’t forget we still have Stackhouse to trade, and if we get desperate or swept off our feet, Bass – and if somebody gets desperate and we’re clearly out of it, Kidd.

by Walter Sobchak on Jan 16, 2009 7:22 PM CST reply actions

Kidd

Hard to find a matchup with Kidd. To find roughly 20 million in contracts that we would actually take on will be tough. Cleveland has 20 million worth of expiring contracts in Snow and Wally.

Hmm

if Hollins could finish a little more than Sagana did and shoot free-throws a little better, that might make up for the fact that he doesn’t appear as good a shotblocker as Diop.

I guess talking of issues this small shouldn’t matter too much.

by jonthefon on Jan 16, 2009 7:53 PM CST reply actions

I hope this isn't the only trade we do.

We traded a bad contract for a player that doesn’t do much, who has a long contract. Though that contract is much better than Diop’s, we got another player that shoots jumpers. I like the trade, because we got rid of Diop’s contract, not because of the players we got.

I have witnessed time and time again.

head to db.com

Fish has the feeling that there’d be another trade coming. I feel that, too.

by ptrck on Jan 16, 2009 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

Um...I don't know what to say

At least it’s not for Juwan Howard! And we got Diop off the books, so that’s a good deal, right?

by Marie on Jan 16, 2009 8:46 PM CST reply actions

Forget what I said, Wright and George have similarly bad PER ratings. Only Green is a little better, but still below league average.

by Norsktroll on Jan 16, 2009 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

Too many

We need more athletic finisher types and a good big man and perhaps a good backup point guard.

by Marie on Jan 16, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

I would consider Hollins an upgrade over the current version of Diop

Albeit not in the “Chris Kaman/Marcus Camby” category of course. Better FG and FT percentages. But he doesn’t rebound a lot and is a bit light for a 7 foot center at 230 pounds.

by Norsktroll on Jan 16, 2009 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

Does he get a lot of playing time?

I know May is benched right now due to fitness issues, so I’m not sure if Hollins gets minutes.

by Marie on Jan 16, 2009 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

No, ten per game

But when he does he is pretty efficient.

by Norsktroll on Jan 16, 2009 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not sure how I feel about this trade

Diop’s big money deal is gone, but this doesn’t exactly make us better.

by Marie on Jan 16, 2009 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

I think it does, even if nothing else is coming

As much as Dallas once liked ‘Gana, he is one of the most overpriced centers at his current contract. Heck, Joel Przybilla makes just a million more and is in another league. Hollins is two years younger, much cheaper and has Diop’s numbers except in rebounds. Carroll is overpriced and the Bobcats needed to get rid of him since he wouldn’t lead them anywhere, but he isn’t a bad throw in as an additional role player. Some other team might like him later in a deal. I doubt he should start, and I haven’t seen him play good defense. I would consider him more like a Kyle Korver/Jason Kapono/James Jones at best, wing player who can make the outside shot (which is off this year so far).

by Norsktroll on Jan 16, 2009 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

Hopefully we trade Dampier for another SG

Maybe throw in Bass too

then we can just play all 6 of our Guards in a cycle with Kidd and Dirk

that’s the plan!

by Beasticon on Jan 17, 2009 1:45 AM CST reply actions

Brilliant plan

that would completely outplay any team in the league!

by jonthefon on Jan 17, 2009 2:49 AM CST up reply actions

Whoops

I guess I forgot the /sarcasm tag.

Plus we already found out that it didn’t work five years ago, when Dirk was more athletic and we had even more offensive talent.

by jonthefon on Jan 17, 2009 5:36 PM CST up reply actions

No, that was obvious sarcasm.

The bright side in me wants to think

that maybe this trade will get us going the way Kyle Korver did for Utah last year, but I highly doubt that’l happen.
