The Mavs and playoff teams
From what I've compiled, the Mavs current have the following records against worthy-enough playoff teams in the league:
Boston: 0-2
Cleveland: 0-1
Orlando: 1-1
Atlanta: 1-1
Lakers: 0-2
Spurs: 1-2
Denver: 0-3
Houston: 1-2
Portland: 2-0
New Orleans: 0-1
Utah: 1-2
Phoenix: 1-1
That adds up to a 8-18 record against "real" playoff contender teams. The Mavs are 27-5 against all other teams, with losses to New Jersey, Sactown, Memphis, Clippers and Milwaukee. Adding to that, they've narrowly avoided defeat in way too many games against lower teams.
Which basically leaves me to conclude they're not in good shape against Western playoff teams. Yet for some reason, I keep thinking that they'll make noise come April.

Not that I personally consider them a playoff team
But Miami is 5th in the East right now…Detroit is 7th.
Yet for some reason, I keep thinking that they’ll make noise come April.

Definitely
That would be three years in a row, if it happens.

I keep saying
I’d rather be fighting it out at the end and playing meaningful games instead of hitting cruise control before the playoffs. Look what cruise control did for us 2 years ago? And I don’t think we were hungry enough last year. Plus, when you see Antoine Wright starting to look like an actual starter on the court coincide with JET’s return, a re-energized Josh Howard, and some really huge contributions from Singleton – I am not sure this team looks the same way it did two months ago, and I’m not sure it will look the same in 2 months either…
It would be nice to make a steady mount towards the wide open # 4 seed, and there’s an outside shot now that we could get the # 2 seed…but an even closer scenario has us missing the playoffs.

but, ultimately, what does this all lead to?

a team that can fight it out with two hall of famers
a couple of great supporting cast members and some veterans and hungry young players to make a run at it this year and next year, while gearing up for the 2010 jackpot

It's too late to give up this year
And next year would be pointless, since it would only benefit NJ. We should have gave up on this year long ago, or did something to make it worth going for.

so if it's too late to give up this year
why have you given up?

Because I know our limitations
Their is no way on earth we can beat the Lakers, and I don’t like our chances vs a healthy Spurs, unhealthy Rockets, NO, or Denver.

so you've given up?
why not leave this board alone then, until post-season, and stick to the MLB board, where you seem to have more optimism?

The thing is
I look at all those teams in the West and apart from LA, I see us with a chance of winning a series against any of those seven or eight teams.

i'm thinking more and more
that Dallas is going to be in a dogfight just to get the 8th. PHX played very well against LA today, they don’t look as down as they should.

without nash mind you
add them to the list of teams around us that have their confidence rolling right now… I dont really get that same feeling with the mavs though

Our schedule down the stretch
looks pretty darn tough. Lots of battles versus Western Conference playoff teams.

which is perfect for us.
if we miss the playoffs, it’s because we shouldn’t have made the playoffs. but on the other hand, it gives this team a perfect “forgery through fire” setting to propel into the postseason with strength

we’ve got a top-14 pick to refurbish the team.

It's not top heavy
But I think you can pick up some good players mid-to-late first round this year.

I love the talent that should be there middle of the draft
If we make the playoffs at number eight, we’re looking at pick number 20 (7 Western teams and 3 Eastern teams will have better records than us). That’s not particularly bad, especially if someone does drop.

Ring that Portland total up to 3-0 now.
We just don’t match up with you guys.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
