Dirk's value

Hey all,

I was just pondering over a trade in my head. I believe the Mavs probably finish about 6th in the west and get Portland in the first round, but I really dont think anyone outside of the L-word or Spurs make it out of the west. I have read before that you guys have pondered the idea of blowing it up and getting younger and making a push for down the road. Here is a trade thought I came up with. Now this requires you to move Dirk. So if he is untouchable at this point in your mind, then this won't work for you.

Here are the reasons why I think this works. You get younger, you get more pieces and you get more cap flexibility. You get more than equal amounts of scoring back (allowing howard I am sure more shots) and you get a local kid in the process to cheer for. You get a starting PF, a starting SG (unless you really want to start Wright, which i know no one does, and Terry is best off the bench) and a proven backup PG to cover 55 year old Kidds afternoon naps. You also get stackhouses 7mil per contract off your books.

I think the Blazers would have to really consider this deal. I know it would force them to win right now, instead of plan on winning down the line. It closes their window by quite a bit due to Dirk's age, but also frees up playing time for some of the other players hidden in their lineup.

What do you guys think? Would you do this trade?

Yup

add in some first rounders, which I doubt Portland would mind considering their salary cap issues, and we could have a good deal. I absolutely love the game of Fernandez.

if Portland would throw in a #1 if it was Fernandez.. thats a big loss on their part

I'm afraid Chiekh Samb's kids are going to be born ducking

LMA, Fernandez, Rodriguez, Raefs Contract and a #1

For Bass, Nowitski and Wright?? That might be a hard sell to Blazer fans

Only fitting that Raef

ends his crappy, overpriced career here with a buyout.

Sentimental value

liked the guy when he was here, he couldn’t really shoot but he finished well off Nash and Van Exel giving him feeds and he generally played good D.

Don't see the point of this move...

unless you think aldridge can be the leader on a championship team.

Yeah ...

We would still be a 6 to 8th seed in the west, not good enough to win it all, and not bad enough to get high lottery picks.
I can be a little bit biased here because I love Dirk. He is a really great player and I think we can still do some damage with him. He is not injury prone and he has a game that doesn’t rely on power, quickness or anything related to age. He is big and will always be, he shoots fantastically well, he has good vision. Because of that I think his career will go down really smooth and he’ll be able to play at a high level beyond 35 years. So, we can still bring players here to improve the team with him, and being the almost ego-less guy he is, he would have no problem being the second or third option on the team.
Don’t get me wrong, that is a good trade talent wise. I would try to exchange Blake for Sergio Garcia, I think he is going to be fantastic once he gets on a fast paced system. But I don’t think it’s time do trade Dirk.

Sergio Garcia is a golfer

Sergio Rodriguez is a Blazer.

I think if the Mavs wanted Sergio

He would not be hard to obtain. He does not fit the Blazers system.

That is the one player I wanted at the start of the season ...

He seems to be a really good player in a system that doesn’t fit his skills. When he is on the open court with Rudy, they are incredible …

I think you would have no problem switching Rodriguez for Blake

And I think the main point of the trade for Dallas is to free up room to make some moves, maybe get rid of Kidd. Aldridge is a very good young player, in only his third year in the league and that 12 mil contract from Raef is a huge piece of money to play with

I think this trade is a bunch of shit.

All those guys contracts except Lafrentz ends after next season, well so do Dirk’s and Stackhouse’s assuming Dirk opts out, which he probably will. If we did sign Aldridge and Rudy to an extension that leaves us with less cap room. I still wouldn’t do it with 2 first round picks.

I have witnessed time and time again.

Haha

if you want Dirk, then you have to start with Roy! Say what you want, but Dirk is an ELITE player, and you cant trade an Elite player, unless your getting a Potential Elite player back. and none of those guys have that kind of potential

by blueballlefty on Feb 10, 2009 12:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Except when the Wolves or Grizz are involved

Elite players are never traded for equal value. They are traded because they cannot play in their current situation (obviously not the case with Dirk).

portland wouldn't do this

they won’t move aldridge.. even in a deal for stoudamire.

by Beasticon on Feb 10, 2009 10:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't see why not

if it gets them a stud piece that makes them serious championship contenders.

For all of LaMarcus’s ability, I don’t think he’s completely there yet. I still think he’s over-reliant on that jumpshot of his: either he tunes it better, or he brings it inside more.
