magic number as of 3-30

  with apologies to ptrk

.
.

pos/team/record/games left

5. Portland 46-27/9

6. Utah 45-27 /10

7. New Orleans 45-27 /10

8. Dallas 43-30 /9

9. Phoenix 40-34 /8

easiest one first.  dallas is up 3.5 games left on phoenix with 8 games left for phoenix to play. dallas magic number to make playoffs is 6. that is any combo of dallas wins or phoenix losses equaling 6.

now, what does dallas have to do to catch up to new orleanes or utah (ie not play the lakers)? the magic number is 8 for the hornets or jazz NOT to get passed up by the mavs.

and the 99% impossible?  portland?  7.

and the real crazy?  the suns catching up to new orleans? .

portland? 3

as long as the number doesn't reach 0, you got a chance.

feel free to let me know if my numbers are off.  i'm just killing time while working...

It's tough

to forecast what the Mavs exactly have to do in order to overtake Utah and NO as far as numbers go since the Tie Breaker (and the Conference Record) is still undecided.

The simplest (and hardest) way, of course, is for the Mavs to take care of business themselves and go on a 9-game winning streak and see what happens in the end. If it were only that easy..

Yeah,

if we could win 8 of our last 9 games, we’d be in good shape. Our two hardest games will be the two against NO and we def have to win at least one of them, plus the home game against Utah. Those are the key games.

A 9-game winning streak would be our highest of the season

I would

because Phoenix is worse.

Well if you look at it from a "How should these games go" perspective...

Minnesota – W
Miami – W (though I think it’s tossup at best)
@ Memphis – W
Phoenix – Tossup
Utah – L
New Orleans – L
@ New Orleans – L
Minnesota – W
Houston – L

Looks like at least 4 L’s to me… Phoenix game could go either way, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Wade came to town and beat us… And frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if this team threw up a dud in one of the ‘gimme’ games against Minnesota and Memphis…

by N41D on Mar 31, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I would love for that Phoenix game

to not only be Mavs win, but the Suns loss that officially eliminates them from playoff contention.

by ptrck on Mar 31, 2009 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

We should

be able to beat Utah and Houston at home.

Somehow

I doubt it.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

by jonthefon on Mar 31, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Basically my feelings...

What has this team done lately that leads you to believe they’ll beat good teams when they really need to?

by N41D on Mar 31, 2009 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe,

and i’m certainly not hoping for this to happen, kobe has some legal issue that causes him to get arrested and miss the first 4 or 5 games of the playoffs.

who am i kidding, even then the lakers would beat dallas

I'm with Wes

Phoenix is a total mess. If the Mavs somehow break apart, then Cubes should do the right thing and really break them apart this off-season…

lakers cilnched.

they are up 9.5 games with 8 left.

i guess the “magic” number is -1…or something like that.

I meant in the playoffs

I think they have a good shot at beating the Lakers if Bynum can’t get back healthy.

Yuck...

I’d be surprised if they even won a series… Especially if they’re matched up against Utah or New Orleans…

Guess we'll see

I think they are being way underestimated, right now.

you should just update the title of this

and update the magic number

If Utah loses tonight and we beat them when we play them,

that’s a game and a half right there that we could gain on them.

S-St. Louis, R-Rams, D-Dallas, M-Mavericks, A-Arizona, D-Diamondbacks.

by srdmad on Apr 2, 2009 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep...

Also of note, we can’t tie Utah in the final standings… They’ll own the tie-breaker off their conference record…

Gotta end up winning more games… If this team wants to move up, they have almost no margin for error the rest of the way… They almost have to win all three games against Utah and New Orleans…

by N41D on Apr 2, 2009 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily...

Here’s what I figure:
Dal currently 45-30
Rest of games:
@ Memphis (should be a W) 46-30
vs Pho (hopefully a W) 47-30
vs Uta (needs to be a W) 48-30
vs No (prob a L) 48-31
at No (most definitely a L) 48-32
vs Min (W) 49-32
vs Hou (hopefully W) 50-32

Okay, so if by some miracle the Mavs really pulled that off, this is how Utah’s games need to go:
Utah: 46-29
vs Minn (W) 47-29
at No (L) 47-30
at Dal (L) 47-31
at SA (L) 47-32
vs GS (W) 48-32
vs LAC (W) 49-32
at LAL (L) 49-33

We’d finish one game ahead of Utah in that scenario. Mavs need to shoot for that.

Lakers will probably

rest the last game, think the Jazz will get that one. Need a victory over those damn Hornets for it to be possible.

Yep...

And for whatever reason, I can’t imagine the Jazz losing three straight to playoff teams down the stretch of the season…
