What's Next Pop?
You said the strategy was to stop Dirk and Terry, and congratulations -- today it was mission accomplished.
Oh, but your team lost.
Got anything else?

Mavs' might have gotten a little lucky
Spurs shot very poorly from three, missed a lot of FTs and arguably their third-best scorer in Mason put up a fat goose egg.
Then again, Terry surely can’t keep sucking. The fact that others have stepped up with the Spurs limiting JET and Dirk probably shows Dallas has too many offensive weapons for San Antonio to handle. J-Ho and the centers have been X-Factors and they’ve come up big.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

so we're lucky that Tim Duncan is a horrible free throw shooter?

on Popovich
I was talking to a friend who is a Spurs fan telling him how much I respected Pops and he told me that he didn’t really like Popovich – and that it was a shame that he turned out to be a good coach.
I had completely forgotten how that came to be. I’m guessing most know the story but a quick refresher for those like me.
Bob Hill was coming off a loss in the Western Conference Semifinals but started the 1996-1997 season 3-16 – but mainly because David Robinson, Sean Elliott, Chuck Person, and Vinnie Del Negro were all injured. Instead of realizing that the injuries had to do with the poor start, the GM fires Hill and hires Pops as coach. That move is pretty retarded. But it gets much worse when you find out that the the GM was Pops himself. and then Pop goes on to coach that team to 20-62 record.
Obviously Pops did turn out to be a pretty good coach but still – total dick.

not too unlike Pat Riley
who I hate for firing Van Gundy and replacing him with…himself. But mostly because I loved Van Gundy because he looks like Ron Jeremy

Just heard 1920’s reporter guy with Popovich. That Gribble has some stones.

it's pretty scary
that Dirk and Jet haven’t done a thing in this series yet.
at the same time, it seems like a younger, more athletic team would be able to do this AND stop the role players from scoring as much. Maybe not Josh, but the others.
We should be optimistic though right? I mean, a lot of firsts here in this series: first time the Spurs were held to that low point total in a game, first time Duncan’s played that horribly, and should be the first time they are out in the 1st round since 2000

Compare this to the 2006 NBA Finals
And you’ll see how much better this offense is in adapting to defenses geared to stop Nowitzki.

POPPOPPOP
maybe he cant be out couched. Maybe the “heart of the champion spurs” are mentally tough. this matters so minimally. this edge they have is flawed. Why? because look at that old ass team missing one key guy depending on 2 studs.. LOOK AT THOSE FOOOLS OVER THERE
We rowdy mavs fan should be pumped and bloodthirsty. if you take the POP magic outta the equation, well then we should be salivating looking at a team WE KNOW we can dominate against. so lets ignore pop completely and finish the job and say peace out these relics of A rapidly fading “half-a-dynasty”
probably my best move is a crab crawl into a crossove fake fadeway spin finger roll

I think you have to win back-to-back
titles at least once to be called a dynasty, but that’s just my opinion. I think you should go work on teaching your pals at poundingtherock on how to be classy. As far as I know the people here at mavsmoneyball don’t constantly give nicknames to players, owners, and teams.

Maybe we should account
for some of those more illiterate, ignorant, fairweather Mavs fans here…
About the nicknames, I don’t think the participants over here have created derogatory names for players and teams, apart from “Mike Miller’s sister”.
But seriously, the level of arrogance of some Spurs fans is ridiculous. Many seem to completely believe that they’re a classy bunch, yet they troll obnoxiously, denouncing other fans as “crybabies” and organizations as “classless”. I’ll ignore the stuff about complaining about shitty calls, flopping, etc., because all fans have different perceptions and hate the refs. But I bet some of them meet friendly drop-ins into their game threads with “Fuck off”. Hypocritical pieces of shit.
Not all of them mind you. Generally the Spurs fans who have dropped in on this blog in the series so far have been well-mannered and good for a perfectly normal discussion. But there’s just a certain breed of Spurs fan that irks me to the extent of obnoxious/“superiority complex”/bandwagoning Lakers or Boston sports fans.

That's how I feel about that asshole Chandler fan who dropped by here to talk shit
That guy totally pissed me off…granted, I was a bit drunk when I responded to him, but I hate it when people drop by here to talk a bunch of shit (ex: the GSW series)…he never came back since his team dropped to 7th and kept getting their asses handed to them by the Nuggets.
I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

I wasn't saying that we have derogatory names,
I was saying that poundingtherock does and usually when somebody does give out derogatory names they are just mad and know that there team’s chances are bleak. Like my friends in 07 with the Diamondbacks, they knew that the Brewers weren’t going to the playoffs, so they would say how bad the Diamondbacks offense is and how they suck, though every time they said something and I always said, we’re in the playoffs and you aren’t.

If it's gotta happen as a phase
let that phase be in a Round 1 ousting of the Spurs. Hope it returns in the next rounds

I'm so tired of Reggie Miller, et al criticizing Dirk for not taking enough shots...
I, for one, am extremely happy that he kept passing out of those double teams. Dirk’s become an incredible passer over the past couple years… doesn’t really show up in the stat sheet, but I’ve been impressed at how often he’s found an open guy either on the opposite wing for three or down on the block when he gets doubled.
Every time Tim Duncan whines, an angel gets its wings.

Not "incredible"
but he’s becoming very smart with his options. He still takes a few of those fadeaways though when there are better passing options.

He is really becoming a very good passer ...
Anyway, I feel a lot safer when he takes those fadeaways than seeing Singleton shooting open on the 3pt line … And I’m really happy to see the team coming along and being able to win shooting so badly and with Jet and Dirk struggling that much. If that was last year, we would be 3 – 1 down for sure.

yeah, incredible might've been a stretch
he’s definitely better than his assist numbers indicate, though

yes
Dirk 2009 looks and plays visibly different from Dirk 2007 when it comes to dealing with the aggressive double teams. I recall Dirk back then looking totally out of his game and so clueless…ugh it was just so painful to watch.

We have a good passing team
not incredible, but Kidd sets the tone and Dirk and Damp can pass pretty well out of the post/top of the key…Barea’s very effective, Jet’s an above average passer for a 2 guard and Josh can pass well when it’s not obvious that a play is called for him. Even Antoine Wright’s had a few beauties here and there. The only real black hole we have is Brandon Bass, and I don’t mind, since he is automatic from that spot around the free throw line or drives to the hole hard.
Compare this to 2 years ago with Devin Harris as our point guard…it wasn’t so much that he wasn’t a good passer, but more that he was most effective for us taking the ball to the hole instead of passing. Remember, that team was dead last in assists, wasn’t it?

yup.. dead last by a good margin, too, I think.
A lot of that was Avery’s system though… Iso Dirk on one play, Iso Stack on the next… not a whole lot of opportunities for assists.
