Mark Cuban's Antics...

Let me preface this by saying ahead of time I know this isn't going to be popular opinion around here, and I have a pretty good feeling I know what kind of reaction I'm going to get... But I feel like I need to get it off my chest.

I think Mark Cuban is an incredible owner. I genuinely believe he'd do whatever it took to bring Dallas a championship... He's not afraid to spend the money necessary to make this team a contender... Has he had his share of blunders? Yeah, he has, but this team's inability to get over the hump wasn't for his lack of effort, and I don't thinkit ever will be...

[jumps on soapbox]

Is anybody else getting tired of his act? This comes out today, in the hours leading up to Game 4...

Mark Cuban admits that he made a not-very-nice comment to Kenyon Martin's mom after Game 3.

From the Denver Post:

Cuban said Sunday by e-mail that when he walked off the court, a fan was screaming about the Nuggets being "thugs," so Cuban said to Martin's mother: "That includes your son."

According to Martin's agent, Brian Dyke, Cuban spotted Moore amid numerous Nuggets fans and said, unprovoked, "Your son is a punk." Regardless of what insult was stated, NBA spokesman Tim Frank said, "The situation on the floor postgame is being reviewed."

Cuban knew it was Martin's mom because, according to him, she talked trash to him in the aftermath of another Nuggets win.

After this morning's post-Mother's Day shootaround, Martin told reporters, "I'm gonna take care of it."

Yet another NBA investigation into something immature and/or incredibly stupid/ignorant this clown has done after a game...

Star-divide

It blows my mind just how immature and ignorant Mark Cuban really and truly is at times (mainly when his team comes up short)...

I've got no problems with him wanting to sit in the stands and be a fan, that's his prerogative... But I don't want my owner pouting like a baby and throwing a temper tantrum as he storms across the court to the Mavericks locker room. I don't want my owner poking his head in huddles during timeouts or confronting officials as they walk off the court. I don't want my owner shoving cameramen out of his way as he stomps off to the locker room upset and butt hurt... And I absolutely don't want my owner making ignorant, cry-baby comments to another grown man's mother after his team loses a basketball game MAINLY BECAUSE OF THEIR OWN SHORTCOMINGS.

Why is Kenyon Martin a thug, Mark? Because he plays physical? Because unlike any player on this creampuff Mavericks roster, he's not afraid to take a fine to send a message to the other team's best player early in a series? Because he has tattoos? Because he won't take any crap off the soft, tissue paper roster you've constructed? How many times has Kenyon Martin had run-ins with the law, aside from the two highly publicized speeding tickets? What is it that makes him a thug? He's a tough, physical, defensive-minded basketball player. He actually plays physical basketball and doesn't let a player just come at him again, and again, and again without some type of consequences, rather than just talking about being tough and making a fool of himself like Erick Dampier...

The fact they were even in this situation coming down the stretch of a must-win game, at home, where they held the Nuggets below 40% from the field for most of the nights is pathetic and all-telling in its own right... Sorry Mark, the NBA didn't cost you this game. The referees didn't cost the Mavericks this game. Talk to you players about why the lost this game.

It couldn't be because Dirk went soft in the final 3 minutes and refused to attack Kenyon Martin after getting into the paint at will for 3+ quarters, could it?...

It couldn't be because Josh Howard and Jason Terry step to the free throw line with chances to stretch the lead with 2 minutes on the clock and both miss the front end of two shots from the stripe, could it?...

It couldn't be because your defense didn't manage to get one single stop down the stretch inside two minutes, could it?...

Your team choked. Again. Get over it. You want it to stop, put an emphasis on finding tough-minded, physical players for a change... The most physical player on this team is Antoine Wright, and we saw just how physical he wanted to be Sunday night in the closing seconds of that game... Was there a foul? Yeah, there was. Should it have been called? Yeah, probably... But you want to give a foul? Give it. Don't just reach in and then throw both arms in the air like you didn't touch him...When you construct a creampuff roster, you can expect creampuff basketball down the stretch when games are close and seasons are on the line... It's not the first time this Mavericks team has wilted under the pressure, and if the roster isn't shaken up at a significant level, it won't be the last, I can assure you of that...

Frankly, I feel Mark Cuban owes Kenyon Martin, his mother, and the Denver Nuggets an apology for the way he acted after Game 3 here in Dallas. As a fan, I'm embarrassed by his behavior, and it's not the first time I've felt this way about something he's done during or after games...

If you want to sit in the stands and be a fan, act like an adult. Regular fans can't storm across the court pushing camera men and yelling at Kenyon Martin's mother. Regular fans can't run on the court and scream at officials if calls don't go their way... If you want to sit in the stands and maintain your MFFL status, try behaving in the same manner you'd expect every other fan in that arena to behave... You're setting a terrible precedent for the way you expect fans to behave at Dallas Maverick games, and you're doing nothing but embarrassing yourself, your franchise, and Mavericks fans around the country.

If you can't control your temper tantrums and want to act like a little kid when everything doesn't go your way, get your ass upstairs in an owner's box and you can pout and cry all you want up there...

I'm sick of it. It's gotten old. The act is wearing thin. People complain about how Jerry Jones is too involved. Jerry Jones wants too much attention. Jerry Jones wants everything to be about Jerry Jones. Well I'm sorry, but you'd NEVER see Jerry Jones sprinting across the football field tailing an official acting like he's a 4 year old upset mommy wouldn't buy him a toy at Wal-Mart...You'd never find Jerry Jones screaming insults at Jason Campbell or Donovan McNabb's mother...

It's embarrassing. It's disgusting. It's time for it to stop. Stop acting like a 6 year old kid every time your less-than-talented roster comes up short in big games...

I think in heated moments, Cuban acts as a fan and not as an owner

Probably a knee-jerk reaction, though that doesn’t make it excusable. I agree that we lost Game 3 not only because of the blown call; you have listed several of the factors that led to our demise. However (and I can’t speak for everyone here), as a fan, it is easy to pin the blame on something other than your team. But when the dust settles and logic kicks back in, you realize that while your behavior was (or might have been) justified at the time, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s correct.

As an owner, Cuban should probably practice more diplomacy in these heated moments.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

Cuban just reacted the same way that most fans do after a tough game.

I would take Cuban over Jerry Jones, any day of the week.

Cuban over Jerry...

Why?

Because he shows more passion? Because he acts like a little kid and yells at people’s moms when his team loses?

Jerry’s ownership tenure with the Cowboys >>>>> Cuban’s tenure with the Mavs…

It’s not close…

Would still like to know why you'd take Mark over Jerry...

Cuz I see no reason for that belief, whatsoever…

You should read Boys will be Boys...

then your imagine of Jerry Jones will change drastically…Mark Cuban is a jackass the majority of the time but he is a much better person then Jerry Jones. Have you ever seen Jerry Jones apologizing for his idiotic self centered actions??? Apologize for running Jimmy Johnson out of town?!?!? Apologizing for hiring puppets like Chan Gailey or Dave Campo???? The answer is no…

I can agree with you on your opinions of Mark Cuban…but bringing Jerry into the conversation is ludicrous. The guy wouldn’t have been successful with the Cowboys if it wasn’t for Jimmy Johnson. Seriously read Boys will be Boys by Jeff Pearlman. The stories totally floored me about Jerry Jones…the guy didn’t do SHIT during the Dynasty Days except sign checks…it was 100% Jimmy Johnson. Jerry Jones told Jimmy during the 91 draft to “pretend” like he was consulting with him before they were making a pick…so the people watching on TV would think he was a key contributor to making the picks. Ridiculous. Mark Cuban is an idiot half the time…but he is doing everything possible to bring a championship to Dallas.

Read it...

Let me be clear… Jerry Jones is no saint, he’s not perfect… I don’t wanna portray that… Still don’t think Cuban is any better… But I never said he was necessarily any worse, either… Both of them grind on me to no end, it just blows my mind the hell Jerry catches and how little people react to Mark Cuban’s crap…

In the 90s, Jerry did EXACTLY what an owner is supposed to do… Sign checks, let football people do what football people do… It went to his head. He’s been sketchy for a decade now…

Luckily for him, he’s got Stephen in his ear as the voice of reason now more than ever… Some of the stuff this offseason really has me interested in seeing what this team can do this year, as I think Jerry is finally back to making decisions for FOOTBALL’S sake rather than publicity’s sake…

With Cuban, he’s always been as over-involved as Jerry is/was… He’s poked his head in huddles… He’s had screaming matches with coaches about their in-game decisions and rotations… He’s made bonehead personnel decisions that have come back to bite this team in the ass… AND he acts like a whiny douche… There’s a massive difference in apologizing for what Cuban has been doing, and apologizing for bad management moves…

I don’t expect Cuban to say he’s sorry for the Harris/Kidd trade… I don’t expect him to apologize for damn near a decade of miserable drafts that have this team hurting for depth this year… That’s entirely different… But I do expect apologies for all the shoving cameramen, yelling at mothers, and chasing officials down the tunnel as they leave the floor… I don’t need you getting in shouting matches with players on other teams… That kind of crap is over the top…

He's not a fan... He's an owner...

He cannot act like that… It’s unbelievable… And I’d be sick to my stomach if even half the fans in the stands acting as ignorant and immature as Mark Cuban did…

It’s pathetic a man in his position has no control over his emotions and acts like a big baby every time his team chokes off a game… Pathetic.

You wonder why every time we’re in a situation like Sunday night calls seemingly ALWAYS go the other way? Cuban’s post game actions are exactly why…

by N41D on May 11, 2009 7:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Edit...

If I saw a fan leaving the stadium acting the way Cuban did Sunday night, I’d have words for him…

This dude was pushing people out his way and confronting Kenyon Martin’s mother.. That’s not the way most fans react after games… That’s the way little cry baby loser 7 year olds act after they lose their big coach pitch game… That’s the way little kids act when mommy refuses to let them have their way…

That’s not the way a grown man acts after his favorite team loses a basketball game… If it is, you need help, and you’re every bit the pathetic whiny douche Mark Cuban is…

by N41D on May 11, 2009 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If, for one, like Mark

However that was so immature and childish. You could say emotions can get the best of anyone, but as an adult, he should have had maybe just a little more personal constraint. Poor camera man, just doing his job..

by ptrck on May 11, 2009 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And what do we get tonight?

Idiot fans throwing things at Kenyon’s mother and his girlfriend throughout the game…

All because of the precedent Mark Cuban set on Sunday afternoon… Pathetic…

Then he sprints off the floor after the game so he don’t gotta see Kenyon, and supposedly he ain’t making the trip to Denver Wednesday…

What a chicken shit…

Apologizing on your blog?

LMAO, that ain’t classy… That’s Cuban being a coward… He should have taken the initiative to find Kenyon and issue the apology face-to-face…

You think we’d have gotten this same apology if the Mavs had lost last night? Cuz I’ve got my doubts…

He said before the game that he had a prior commitment -- how is that chickenshit?

He also says in his blog that his family has had similar problems while in Denver.

Similar problems in Denver don't make it OK in Dallas...

And I’d bet problems in Denver had nothing to do with Stan Kroenke… This entire thing was escalated by what Cuban did Sunday…

If it’s a prior engagement, fine… But the timing of the announcement is humorous nonetheless…

by N41D on May 12, 2009 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's purely your speculation
This entire thing was escalated by what Cuban did Sunday…

I was at the ‘06 Finals and saw some Miami fans get into it with some Mavs fans — and that had nothing to do with Cuban. Just because something he said made news does not mean those people wouldn’t have been jackasses on their own.

I’m not saying what Cuban did or did not do is right — I’m saying you can’t blame one man for a bunch of likely drunk morons actions.

All I'm saying is...

He acts that way as a “fan” at his games, and people are going to think they’re fine if they want to push the envelop…

Of course, they’re not. They’ll get ejected, but it’s setting a terrible precedent to say you want to be the normal fan at Mavericks games, then go darting across the court to chase down officials, pushing cameramen, and yelling at people’s mothers… You can’t do that. You want to be a fan, act the way you expect fans and spectators in your arena to act…

He made Kenyon’s mom a target… I don’t see how that’s debatable..

by N41D on May 12, 2009 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see how it's debatable

that opposing fans at NBA playoff games are targets regardless. I had no idea what Kenyon’s mom looked like. I’m sure I could’ve figured it out based on her location and entourage — but it doesn’t change the fact that stuff like this happens alot — Cuban even said it happened to his family in Denver — and it is not a direct result of Cuban’s “antics.”

by Dirk Diggler on May 12, 2009 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Opposing fans may be targets at other games...

But it’s safe to say that every night in the NBA, we don’t have several extra security guards and police officers around one specific section to ‘protect’ a player’s family/friends… It’s safe to say we don’t have players paying extra close attention to what’s going on in the stands because they’re legitimately worried about what’s going on around their family…

The way people act at sporting events is absolutely mind-blowing to me… Yeah, it happens everywhere, but that doesn’t mean I should be comfortable with the owner of my favorite team running around like a drunk idiot every time a call or game doesn’t go his way…

by N41D on May 12, 2009 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are combining 2 completely separate incidents

there is Cuban being pissed off on the court.

Then there are drunk idiot fans talking trash and causing problems in the seats.

Linking those 2 incidents is where you lose me. But, you’re right they are both not necessarily good things for the org. My point about the fans is that it happens everywhere. I used to live in Phoenix and go to Mavs/Suns games there as an “out of town” fan and it wasn’t always pretty. I never had to have people guard my section — but then again I’m a nobody and KMart’s family isn’t exactly that.

Well, apparently they brought some of it on themselves last night..

And if that’s the case, so be it… I have no problem admitting I may have been wrong about some of it…

But even still, these are all adults, with children and families sitting all around them, and they can’t behave in a mature manner… It’s unbelievable…

Hold on......

N41D please tell me you aren’t here trying to say crap that is not true. LALA threw red soda on the fans behind her proof is from security camera’s the NBA reviewed and LALA admitted to it saying fans were saying bad things to her. Secondly, not one camera has shown beer thrown at Mrs. Moore and if so please show proof and not yours and the Denver post opinions. I don’t care for all the he said she said crpa show me proof not , Hey the Denver post and Denver family members said it so it must be true. Denver has never been known as a lovely fan base in their building as there has been many instances in your own building . So dont come here talking crap about other people and judging when you have the same crap going on in your own house. I can’t stand double standards and you fans portray yourselfs as to be perfect. It just makes me laugh at people like yourself.

Your team choked

Thats why I figured you to be a nug fan sorry. To rebute your post though on a serious note……well gang members associated at his bday party ….. his group of guys around him all the time intimidating opposing fans is cause to be called a thug. The denver cornerback killed at the club that hosted his bday party is another cause. There are lots of reasons and maybe him f bombing fans this morning at the AAC by the loading docks. He is what he is and that is a thug. Sorry .

It's always seemed to me

That a lot of fans appreciate Mark Cuban’s passion for the Mavericks and it helps him sell tickets. Beyond his passion for the Mavs, he’s an excellent businessman and took the 3rd most popular team in Dallas and made them a consistent 2nd (or 3rd thought behind Texas) for a lot of people in the Dallas area. There’s something to be said for that.

I don’t care what he did with Kenyon Martin’s mom. That’s just a bunch of hubbub back & forth.

In my opinion

Any thing that detracts or distracts from the game itself is never good. Though I have to admit Cuban is one hell of an owner and is willing to do whatever it takes to let his team win, his personality sometimes overshadows the game and his team itself, something that should never happen. He is passionate I have to admit but he has to know the boundaries that owners should never cross. This is why I’m not surprised KMart acted the way he did after game 4. Being the owner he should exemplify what he wants his organization to be viewed as by the public. He just has to carry himself better. I guess his written apology is a first step but he should realize that all of this should be about the players and the game of basketball. Just my two cents

by slickd on May 12, 2009 10:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I like his antics

They aren’t really distractions, but really shows his passion. Oh, and let’s be honest K-Mart is the definition of a thug. Just look at him, the way he speaks, and what he says to the media; He’s a thug. Anyways, it didn’t motivate K-Mart to do anything good, he choked the next game and fouled out with like 2 points and a few rebounds?

He makes the game more fun and popular for the fans, and he has a real personality behind him. I am fine with his actions as long as it doesn’t cost or distract the team. His antics are more fun than annoying, I thought that was the opinion of the majority of Maverick fans.
