When tempers and such start impacting the fan experience both in Dallas and Denver, and it requires special security, thats not what I want for Mavs or Nuggets fans. No one takes more abuse and gets more threats on the road than I do. So I know exactly how it feels. I’ve also had my family and friends spit on at games in this series. So I know how unpleasant that is as well. It’s a dirty secret that all arenas need to do a better job of protection for visiting team fans, particularly during the playoffs.

So at this point I would like to apologize to you and your mom KMart for my comment. I should have not said anything and I was wrong. Hopefully you will accept the apology and we can move on.

When the series comes back to Dallas, your family, and the family of other Nuggets players are welcome to stay in my suite, with my family. Its amazing how tempers mellow when real people talk to each other and realize that its still just a game.

Cuban's apology to Kenyon Martin's mom. Notice the bolded comment.

I am a regular poster over on PoundingTheRock and therefore a Spurs fan and even as a Maverick-hater I still would LOVE to see you guys take out the Thuggetz.

Personally, I think Cuban should have apologized if and only if Dallas wins the series. Saying “I’m Sorry” right now makes it seem like there are limits to what the Mavericks would do as a franchise in order to win this series and honestly, that is unacceptable when your team is down 3-1 in a best-of-seven series. This is playoff basketball and the stakes are high, if you need to make fun of K-Mart’s mother to get in his head then do it, and (maybe) ask for forgiveness later. The simple fact of the matter is it doesn’t matter who takes a dig at who, you’re allowed to say whatever you want since words have never directly harmed anyone…also just because someone is related to a player doesn’t make him or her immune to the abuse that fans would regularly hurl at other fans.

Dallas fans should be ashamed of themselves. That was trashy and classless how they acted last night.
That said, the Mavericks played great ball, a lot of heart. Dirk was awesome.
As a Nuggets fan I’m excited to see our two teams duke it out again on Wednesday. Even more excited that the classless Dallas fans won’t be included.

I was at game 2 in Denver

and my friend and his girlfriend had ice thrown at them all game. Then I had to deal with some awesome guys shoving “Dirk Who” (that I eventually grabbed out of their hands and tore up) signs in my face in the mezzanine. I have been to a lot of hostile crowds (OU-LSU in NO for the National Title, OU/Tx) and that was by far the worst I have been a part of.

So calling the Mavs fans classes is extremely off base.

alcohol. period.

I was sober at the game last night. Not that I’m usually drunk, but I usually have A beer. And there was some idiot Mavs fan behind me (yes I am a Mavs fan, too) that kept yelling the dumbest stuff out over and over. Women and children there (he had a younger son with him), and after a call, he yells out, “why don’t you just suck his dick too!?” and we all stare at the guy, and he immediately apologized. But kept ranting about stupid stuff the whole night. And then I realized, I don’t want to drink at a game ever again. And I don’t think fans should be allowed to.

Just my two cents.

I haven’t been to any of the games this series, but I’ve seen both Kenyon’s family and entourage at games in the past, both when he was with the Nuggets and Nets.

His mom is about as classy as you’d expect someone who gave birth to Kenyon Martin to be.

Want to guess what her favorite word is?

I’ll give you a hint: If I, a white guy, yelled it at players, I would at the very least get dragged out by security, at the very worst get bum-rushed Ron Artest style.

I don’t want to bring down my home for the past 25 years (the Southeast side of the Metroplex), but there’s a place where we belong: in the nosebleeds, with tickets we won of the radio, getting into fist fights with drunken loudmouth Mexican dudes who thought it’d be funny to wear a Sacramento Kings jersey, even though we’re playing the Golden State Warriors.

Denver fan here

I don’t understand you guys. You guys call Denver players thugs, and you react by being thugs yourselves? Being classy would be the correct response; acting the way you are acting is just as embarrassing.

Anyways, be happy that you were able to pull one out. The late foul on KMart offsets the non-call in game 3: it looked like he got all ball, and they refused to show replays. Frankly the officiating has been terrible on both sides of the ball, so I won’t complain, but I don’t think Dallas should either.

Good luck in game 5. I really hope the game doesn’t get too chippy; we don’t want any of our players injured for the Western Conference Finals.

Sorry, I don’t set my standards by what happens in other places or what other people do… “Oh, well, it happened in Denver, so it’s not a big deal” … No, it’s a big deal when a man worth millions of dollars, in a position of power, influence, and high expectations whines like a baby and acts like an idiot…

Were people throwing stuff at Kenyon’s mom Sunday? Were people pouring beer on her? No, she was made a target because of how highly publicized this all became…

No, it’s a big deal when a man worth millions of dollars, in a position of power, influence, and high expectations whines like a baby and acts like an idiot…

Again, your anger is combining 2 separate issues.

Were people throwing stuff at Kenyon’s mom Sunday? Were people pouring beer on her? No, she was made a target because of how highly publicized this all became…

Out of town fans are ALWAYS targets. Try going into an opposing arena — talk trash (are you going to tell me KMart’s family/crew just sat there and didn’t say a word back to the fans?) — and see if the other fans just shake your hand and move on.

You’re going a little crazy over something that happens quite often — which doesn’t make it OK. It just means you need to chill out a bit.

Owners running around behaving the way Cuban does...

Doesn’t happen often… And that’s been my point from the beginning…

I understand this kind of stuff happens in arenas everywhere… But Mark Cuban fueling the fire and jumping in the middle of all of it makes me sick…

Sorry, I expect more from grown men and adults in places where women and children are present… Going to sporting events and verbally abusing people or throwing things at them and all that jazz ain’t my cup of tea…

Apparently Kenyon’s mother and people around her were acting out and being over-the-top last night, so them getting what happened doesn’t bother me as much… But it still leads to the point of grown adults acting like children and starting some BS over a damn basketball game…

It's entirely different...

Because Mark Cuban, as an owner of a professional sports team, needs to be above this crap… Getting into it with players on other teams isn’t his place… Yelling at a player’s mother about her child isn’t his place…

And frankly, aside from the fact K-Mart used the F word and actually saying it to Mark rather than Mark’s mother, is what Kenyon did any different than what Cuban did? So is Mark Cuban a thug? Does name calling and/or swearing make you a thug?

Frankly, it speaks volumes about the team he’s built that he feels the need to play Mr. Tough Guy…

I just think...

If you’ve got the nerve to say something like that to somebody’s face, you better be willing to apologize to their face…

Yeah, with tempers flaring last night and with all the stuff coming out today about how everybody else was acting (Kenyon, his mother, and the people around them included), it changes my views on that some… It may not have been the time or place…

But still… Initially that didn’t come across as a sincere form of apology… It came across, to me anyways, as more something he felt he had to do because of all the hell he caught…

by N41D on May 12, 2009 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

let's say

this is sort of a ploy by Cuban as some suggest to get the team riled up (ours to play harder, theirs to lose their cool). On top of that, let’s say Cuban’s fined $50,000 for what he did, but Carmelo is tossed from Game 5 (unlikely but this is my scenario, so I get to say what happens here). We win Game 5 in Denver, then come back to Dallas for Game 6, which would seem like a win, and then Game 7 is a “who the hell knows” type of a game. Let’s say that happens. Is the owner benefiting by selling more tickets to more games? Yes. As a business decision, that would make it a success. So if Cuban lit a fire involving K-Mart’s mom, and then benefits because of it, and the fans of the Mavs benefit because of it, and the players benefit because of it, why is this a bad thing? Because he’s being a dick? How many CEOs of companies do you know that AREN’T acting like a dick in their jobs?

I'll agree that Cuban could've and should've offered more in the way of an apology

But K-Mart isn’t doing himself any favors. And correct me if I’m wrong, Cuban was actually insulting Kenyon when he made the off-hand comment to his mom, was he not?

I don’t think insinuating that K-Mart is a thug is remotely off the mark. See the links above.

If the NBA really wanted to clean up the game they’d penalize guys like K-Mart for giving the league a bad name, not call a horrendous amount of flagrants and throw around suspensions like candy. Is Cuban complicit in all this for instigating the situation? Yeah. But K-Mart’s still a massive douchebag.

And again

I get that the safety of family comes first. The Mavs should’ve done a much better job of putting security around her, anticipating that there’d be some hot tempers. But let’s not pretend that this woman who raised Kenyon Martin is an angel. I’m not saying she brought it all upon herself. But she probably brought some of it on herself. There’s ways you behave as a human being and there’s ways you don’t. Her son does an awful lot of the latter.
