Who do we bring back?
From HoopsHype, the current list of Mavs' free agents and the amount going off the payroll stand at:
Jason Kidd (21.3 mil)
Devean George (1.6 mil)
Ryan Hollins (970k)
Brandon Bass (820k)
Gerald Green (820k)
James Singleton (800k)
Erick Dampier (option likely not to be exercised: 9.5 mil)
I'd like to hear some opinions on who we bring back. I'm thinking right now, that TDG's probably gone. I think the Mavs use their MLE on Bass (might get him for less), and look to get Hollins, Singleton and Green back on cheap money deals.
Which leaves Kidd and Damp. Of course, I'd like to see us resign Kidd, maybe go hard at him early for around 10mil. If he gets a similar offer from a team like Cleveland or a big one from a team looking for a veteran to mentor young guards, I think we don't have much of a chance. And Damp? There's some replacements at center on the market, but I dunno...
I'm just throwing it out there, but any chance the Mavs can go for Andre Miller over Kidd? Hell, maybe even Mike Bibby (but then again, he's fired too many daggers into the Mavs). I don't think so, it might be screwing our 2010 plans if we give them a multi-year deal.
Right now, the list of intriguing potential FA's I'm looking at. There's some guys I left out, (say, someone like Shawn Marion or a very cheap guy such as Ramon Sessions) because I doubt the Mavs want to, or have the pull or payload to go for them:
Chris Wilcox
Anthony Parker
Radoslav Nesterovic
Ron Artest (throwing it out there)
Drew Gooden
Raef LaFrentz (okay, just sentimental value. I think he's done unfortunately.)
Okay, that's a short list, but I was being kinda exclusive in terms of what I think we're looking to get. Of course, perhaps a need can be filled in the draft, which this year is stocked with nice role players in the mid and lower first rounds. But this team has a lot more to cover up, and it's good to get discussion up early and get over this playoff loss as soon as possible.
Any thoughts? Who do we keep out of that list? Who do we explore getting?

well
I want Bass and Hollins back.
As for the Kidd situation…I’m a little torn on this. I still believe this can all work out, as long as we get the right players alongside him; he’s like Derek Fisher, minus the shooting and plus the passing. If he doesn’t come back, maybe we can get Ramon Sessions or Raymond Felton?

only bring back
BASS…
Give Sessions a fat check, and try to trade terry because he is prob the only one you can get anything for and bring in a nice center and bench player(s).

Dampier still has one year left on his contract, the final one is not guaranteed
Unless he meets performance goals which he didn’t respectively won’t meet, e.g. a certain high amount of minutes played. Thus he becomes the Erick Dampier 2010 Expiring Contract. And Cuban will look to move him to a team that wants to shed salary either in the summer or latest at the deadline. If there is no good offer, he can also keep him until 2010 to try and free cap space for a big-time free agent.
Stackhouse has $2 million guaranteed on a $7 million contract if waived some time in August after the Mavs didn’t win a title in 2008 or 2009. So he really should get traded in the summer to a team looking for cap relief, since they could send out 7$ million in salary but only would to have $2 million to pay. Add some cash to such a deal, and that becomes highly attractive to several clubs even though Stack won’t play for them.
Bass can command about the MLE on the market, and I suppose Cuban will match all offers.
Barea still is under contract, and he provided some nice spark on the offensive end – but isn’t solid enough to be the starter. I would keep him in the backup role.
Howard likely doesn’t have the same trade value on the market he had two years ago. It would surprise me if they trade him since they likely won’t get players back who will instantly help to win a title. The best the Mavs can hope is that his ankle (surgery) heals well and he is in top shape in the fall.
As Morey is showing in Houston, the key is to have a few great players and surround them with role guys for specific tasks. The Mavs were lacking in that department in recent years, overpaying for aging vets (Magloire, Juwan Howard, George, …) or too limited players (Diop/Carroll).
One more real scoring thread who can punish the opposing team inside would greatly help, but it would take a minor miracle to land someone like this from a team that needs to rebuild. I hope Donnie gets the green light to try any wild scenario imaginable. Otherwise next year really will go again like the last two.

I want Bass, Green, and Hollins back.
Sign Kidd, if only your trading him. I read that the Heat want to upgrade over Chalmers.

If Kidd leaves, I have a really dumb idea for a replacement :)
We trade Stackhouse to the Pacers for Jamaal Tinsley who they desperately want to get rid of (they removed his nameplate from his locker and asked him to stay away from the team Marbury style). The salaries match perfectly, and he has two years at $7,200,000 and $7,650,000 left. Since our last deal with the Pacers for Williams worked so well (for them), they should jump on this.
Cuban and Donnie have a heart for trying to rescue failed NBA careers. I could also see them trying to bring in AI. Nothing is weird enough.

I don't want the Mavs to deal with Indiana anymore, unless it's for Granger
I’m still shaking my head at the Marquis Daniels for Austin Croshere trade.

I miss Marquis.
He didn’t flourish under Avery’s system but I liked him and Howard playing together and slashing to the basket. Not to mention Marquis always looked like he was half asleep.

I don't think
Carlisle would go for this after he had to deal with that headache as the coach of Indiana.

Are we gonna start another trade idea thread?

At Kidd's age,
does he really deserve 10 million?

there's no reason
not to expect him to put up a line of 8/6/8 with at least 1.5 steals a game and 80% from the line. as long as there’s a fast backup PG i would say put up figures like that is worth at least 7-8 million. of market dictates 10 million, so be it. certainly wouldn’t go above 11-12 though.
keep kidd, bass and hollins.

no, he doesn't
But if the Mavs really want him back, maybe they really have to give him near that amount. I think a two-year deal with a team option for a third one will have both parties satisfied, also 7-8 mil per year.

sign ramon sessions!
I think he would work great with kidd if we could manage both of them.

I would keep Bass, Kidd (for 10 mil max), Green and Hollins
And depending on the situation, Singleton. But we really need to trade with the Clippers. They want to save money and they have the first pick this year who they already commit to using on Griffin, that’s one more player to the Kaman, Camby, Randolph list of bigs they have. I’m sure they would trade Kaman for little return, just to have some cap relief and make room for the new guy. I know Kaman has a trade kicker, but he would be a huge improvement over Dampier if healthy obviously. I would like Camby a lot more, but he is always injured. He would be a great force inside on offense and defense and would generate a lot of fast breaks.
Also, for the 2 guard spot, if we deal well we can have a chance on Redd or Stephen Jackson. Just adding the later would be a huge upgrade in both offense and defense and also “toughness”.
Other option we have is packing or pick with a expiring like Stack’s contract plus 2 million for a bad contract and a higher pick. Or even Damp + our pick to Washington’s pick and some bad contracts. The wizards already said that unless they can get a realy difference maker in this draft, they don’t have much interest on their pick. And they land the 5th pick, that’s a scenario. I hope something happens.

well first off
trade damp to houston, and see if you can get the cookie monster to come out of retirement with his banged up knees, maybe trade howard for mcgrady, who wants to watch another season of the Dampier Dance, not me, he is terrible!
