Game 1 Thoughts

Fresh off the loss, here are my immediate thoughts.

Turnovers, Turnovers, Turnovers.

The Mavericks committed 20 turnovers, 8 by Jason Kidd.  To put that number in perspective, Jason Kidd committed 3 turnovers against the Spurs...in the entire series.  So why the disparity?  We knew coming into this series that the Nuggets had athletic players that could give the Mavericks trouble.  But this was mostly a close game.  Give credit to the Nuggets for being in the passing lanes and disrupting our offense. But make no mistake about it: the Nuggets DO NOT want to work hard on defense.  Some of the Mavericks turnovers came when they simply allowed the Nuggets defenders to out-muscle them for a steal.  There were also mistakes early in the shot clock which is exactly what the Nuggets want.  They want to play defense for 10 seconds and hope they get a turnover or rebound in that span.

More on Jason Kidd- I thought he had a quiet first half.  In a bad way.  In the second half, many of his passes were sloppy and unnecessary.  He singlehandedly killed our momentum in the third quarter.  This came at a time when the game was not out of hand and there wasn't a rush.  I want the old, (no pun intended) poised Jason Kidd from the San Antoinio series.  To his credit, his defense on Billups was very effective.

Physical Play

In the first half and third quarter, I felt the Mavericks matched the Nuggets blow for blow.  In fact, they got off to a great start, not letting the Nuggets get inside their heads.  Here's the part where I blast the officiating.  The Nuggets got away with a lot of touch fouls.  On the other end, all of our contact drew a whistle.  Rick Carlisle should just send the NBA a blank check and sound off publicly.  So many times during the game I said out loud, "Carmelo would have gotten that call" or  "The same thing happened to us on the other end!  Why is it foul when we do it?".  I'm usually not one to disparage referees (seriously) but the disparity between fouls was clear as day.  The Nuggets attempted 34 free throws to the Mavericks 13.  Yes, 13.  Even the announcers called them out a few times.  I wouldn't make such a big out of this if the Mavericks weren't playing aggressively.  We've all seen them settle for too many jump shots, avoid contact, allow players to penetrate at will.  But today I could tell they made a conscious effort to play aggressively.  My only crtitism is that they let the officiating get to them and became more passive as the game went on.  That obviously played right into the Nuggets' hands.  That's the Mavericks team they want to go against.

Okay Carlisle, it's your move.

I think the Mavericks need to tweak their offense a little bit when Chris Andersen is guarding Dirk.  Catching the ball at the free throw line wasn't a high percentage play today.  I credit Dirk for staying aggressive no matter who was on him.   And there were times when Dirk made unforced errors.  But I think giving Dirk the ball a little further outside the lane will work wonders.  He can still get into his jumpshot, but getting Andersen outside the lane favors Dirk.  Andersen doesn't want to guard Dirk that far out.  And the Mavericks could run a cutter through the lane to take advantage of an Andersen-less lane.  Also they could let Dirk catch it on the block and let the 7-footer survey the court or turn and shoot.

Unfortunately the bench didn't come through today.  Bass, where are you?  Part of this was officiating (see above).  But JJ was virtually non-existent and at times over matched.  Hollins was average.   Wright has seen a steady decline in his play.  Even Jet was pedestrian.   I don't see the Mavericks winning this series with this kind of bench play, no matter how well the starters play.  I think we already knew that though.  Carlisle really needs to coach up this group.

Hey, they're using our winning formula!

With Billups and Anthony held in check for most of the game, Denver's role players came to play.  When Anthony went to the bench with his third personal foul, the Mavericks probably patted themselves on the back.  With Denver's best scorer on the bench, the Mavericks could close the second with a bang.  Instead, they made Nene look like Amare Stoudemire.  He hit jump shots, finished fast breaks, and either scored or drew fouls using post moves.  Perhaps he was underestimated in the Mavericks' game plan, similar to the way the Spurs underestimated JJ.  Dampier getting hurt early sure didn't help.  And when Anthony Carter has a game this good, you know things are clicking for the Nuggets.  J.R. Smith was J.R. Smith, no surprises.

The Mavericks MUST adjust their paint shooting to Andersen.  Hanging in the air for three seconds isn't going to cut it.  Try a reverse layup, a quick dunk, shoot it high off the glass, or a high-arching floater.  Also, use his shot blocking against him by drawing fouls.  In 24 minutes he was called for only 1 foul.  That needs to change.

The Good

Jason Kidd's defense on Chauncey Billups...Mavs starting the game aggressive...Dirk is playing tough...Mavs contained the Nuggets runs well until the fourth quarter...Carlisle is once again a master of the timeout...The Mavs had balanced scoring, just not enough.

Final Thought

Can our trainers piece Josh Howard together yet again?  I was encouraged by his second half, but he didn't drive much after the injury.

This is the way I saw the game...Additions/corrections are welcome.

Excellent post...rec'd

I’m in total agreement in regards to the bench and I think JJB should come off it in Game 2 rather than starting. Also, as I mentioned in the game thread comments, this might not be Bass’ series, given the length and athleticism of the Nuggets’ players. He was great against the Spurs, but I think it might be Singleton’s time.

Kidd’s high amount of turnovers is more of an exception than the norm, so I will be unusually optimistic here and say that he won’t make those mistakes again in the second game. I can understand if Denver’s defense caused them, but some of his turnovers weren’t even forced and were simply atrocious.

Not sure how Damp’s and Josh’s injuries are going to affect us in Game 2. I haven’t read any updates on them.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

I agree re: Kidd's turnovers

he looked WAY off in certain situations…and I bet a lot of money that won’t happen again.

Is there still hope?

After I watched the game, I can’t help but realize that the Nuggets are the better team. If the Mavs win in 6 (my prediction) or 7, it should be considered an upset or a shocker. They are more athletic, more aggressive and more talented in almost every position. Everybody stepped up for them when Chauncey and Melo (foul trouble) wasn’t in the game. The defining play of the game: Anthony Carter saved the ball to Andersen who leaped for the ball, and in a crazy sequence, JR smith received a pass then threw a behind-the-back pass to Melo for a slam. DALLAS GOT OUTHUSTLED AND OUTPLAYED. plain and simple.

But I do think we still have a chance. Jho played hurt. Damp played hurt. Dirk missed some open shots. Terry was, well still awful in this playoffs. If everybody can play up to their billing, this team definitely has a chance.

The bench needs to step up BIG TIME. Make them watch the tape and make them mad about themselves for not showing up. JJB should come off the bench and Rick Carlisle should find ways to win the chess match.

Mavs in 6. There is still hope.

outhustled is one thing

and we can cry about the officiating all we want, but when it all comes down to a 34-13 disparity between free throws, that’s where the game was lost. If we get to the line more, and they do less, I bet we have a shot at the end. You can blame the refs, which I sorta do and is EASY to do…or this team can decide “screw it…let’s get to the line”

They did get to attempt to get to the line in that game

Made a concerted effort to do so…unlike so many other times this season where they’d try to break runs by heaving up jumpers.

What I didn't mention

was that I thought the Mavs beat themselves more than Denver beat them. I would bet that 15 of the 20 turnovers were just mental mistakes on our part, rather than the Nuggets defense. The game would have gone to the final minute if not for these.

And to reiterate, I normally shy away from blaming officiating b/c the Mavs often avoid contact. But it was clear to me that the game was being called differently on both ends of the court. The Mavs (especially Dirk) were very physical but did not get to line. Meanwhile, when Nene or Carmelo made a move they got the benefit of the doubt. With all that driving, Dirk shot 4 total free throws. That’s why I suggested he catch the ball on the block more.

Good game from a Nuggets fan

Dirk was on fire early, he really came to play this series. Thanks for keeping the GDT (mostly) classy, you guys are welcome on PA&R and Roundball Mining Company.

Was Terry having an off night tonight? I didn’t really see him get into the game, and I think unless he and Dirk are going off together the rest of the Mavs’ offense can’t get into sync. They’re both pretty much exclusively jumpshooters, and their perimeter opens the inside for Hollins and Damp. Otherwise, Denver just clogs the paint. Am I reading the offensive Mavs flow right, or is there another player I’m missing that’s key in their offense?

Anyway, I thought you guys played really well up until the run, and this should make for a very competitive series.

It seems like JET has been off since winning the award, honestly

if you didn't mention Josh Howard

you missed a lot. And that injury certainly shook things up. Same with Damp. I think momentum shifted BIG time when they were hurt.

Barea isn’t consistent, but he’s a HUGE threat when he’s on. Bass, too.

Just a couple of quick notes. . .

1) Kidd played against Denver three times this season. He played in Denver twice before the first playoff game. He had 11 turnovers in the two games. (6 in the first, 5 in the second)
Maybe it wasn’t that he had a bad day, but that the Nuggets give him some problems. (he had one turnover the game he played in Dallas)

2) the refs were tilted toward Denver only slightly. yes, there was a great deal of difference in FT. Of course, our best player sat for most of the first half due to foul trouble. Two of those calls were 100% BS calls. With 9:26 left in the game, it was Denver 86 Dallas 82. Mavs ball. Terry had his shot blocked (100% clean) and Melo was fouled driving to the hoop on the ensuing break. (clear foul, nobody argued) Melo made it 88-82. From that point on the FT were 2 for Denver, 2 for Dallas. The score from that point on was 21 to 13 in favor of the Nuggets down the stretch.

Fact is, this is basketball. That garbage happens all the time. It’s funny. I remember a game in Dallas on March 27. Kidd was out for Dallas. Nene was out for Denver. Despite Denver being the aggressive team all night, the Mavs ended up with 4 total turnovers and a FT edge of 37-18. (which was actually 37-16 if it weren’t for a late intentional foul)

21 more FT attempts. 4 turnovers. 10FT attempts in the final quarter of a game Denver led by 10 heading into the fourth. (Denver had 6 FT attempts, 2 of which were given up on purpose.

by the way, the Nuggets won that game. And yes, Nuggets fans were bitching on the board about how screwed up the officiating was. How many Mavs fans were thanking the refs for keeping the game close and giving them a chance to win then?

You lost to a better team in one game. There are six games left for Dallas to prove how good they are. In one or two of them they’ll get every call in the book. a couple more will be even. If you want to win the title, you’d better win one of those games where the calls don’t go your way. (fwiw, for all the Hornets whining Denver shot 6 more FT in the five game series against NO)

nice lecturing...

thanks for the enlightenment

by ptrck on May 4, 2009 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I mean, I believe in the notion of home cooking

and that the home team will generally more of those 50/50 calls made in favour of them, and the away team not getting too many of those 50/50 calls. That usually explains the difference between FTs for home and away teams. The fact that the Mavs take a lot of jumpers at times means that I’m not often surprised when they shoot less FTs than the other team. So yeah, I was expecting Denver to get to the line more with their athletic nature.

But that game was called differently for both sides. The Mavs clearly made the effort to play aggressively inside and try and draw fouls, but they didn’t get too many calls, even on the seemingly blatant contact. The Nuggets were getting calls most of the time they drew contact in the paint.

I’ll agree with you though that the Nuggets played better than the Mavs, and that Dallas really has to work on keeping the ball and solidifying their pretty porous inside and transition D come Game 2 if they don’t want to head back to big D down 2-0. I think Billups is going to adjust after being kept quiet.

really. . .

I think if you look at the shot chart of your players from the second quarter on, you’ll see a jump shooting team that didn’t attack the basket at all.

ptrck – Get pissed at the refs and get pissed at me. Call it a lecture, but deny any single one of the points made. Hell, I didn’t even go into the play where JR was hit in the face. I actually hope Carlisle, Dirk and the rest believe it was really the refs who cost them this game. That means they won’t make the key adjustments they need to make and Denver will roll again in game two. (no, I don’t think they will. I think Dallas will come out and finish playing well this game. If they are going to win a game in Denver, this is the one they’ll win)

by TroyF on May 5, 2009 12:57 AM CDT reply actions

How can you put up a shot attempt

when you get hacked and there’s no call? The second quarter was the particularly bad part, the rest of the game was generally fine.

Even if that’s what Carlis and co. believe, I’d be very, very annoyed if the Mavs made no adjustments going into Game 2. I’m pretty sure the Mavs picked up the fact that they got shredded pretty badly both inside and in transition (58 in the paint, 29 fast break). I hope they make those right adjustments because I don’t see them winning the series after going down 2-0, I’m not sure they have the willpower to return from that deficit.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

oh relax, why don't you

I’m not pissed at you; I don’t even know you. And I don’t deny any of your points. But it doesn’t make them right, though.
