Where Amazing Happens

Joel Litvin, NBA President, League and Basketball Operations, issued the following statement regarding the final seconds of Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals between the Denver Nuggets and the Dallas Mavericks:

"At the end of the Dallas-Denver game this evening, the officials missed an intentional foul committed by Antoine Wright on Carmelo Anthony, just prior to Anthony's 3-point basket."

He then added, "Sorry we fucked you again.  Toodle-doo."

Do you know if that statement applies to every time that Melo had the ball and was bounced around like Weeman in a mosh pit without getting a foul call…or only to the last time it happened?

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

Grow up

If Anthony misses that shot, are any of you going to be crying about the non-call in that case?

I doubt it. Kudos to the refs for letting them play.

Further, if Melo makes those 2 shots, it goes to OT. And I’m betting Dallas wimps out there anyway.

by KC Gunner on May 9, 2009 10:51 PM CDT reply actions

No ... we would say: thanks god he missed because those refs were trying to fuck us again ...

But that didn’t happen, congratulations for the win … It’s always better when you can count with the 3 guys in black and white on crunch time … And by the way, the NBA assumed their error, is not a case of some team whining and all that, is something that was plain clear to see but for some unknown reason your 3 guys didn’t see it … No problem with it.

by hugommorais on May 9, 2009 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

None of that changes the fact that the refs blow

Kudos to the refs? The NBA has said they blew it…. so kudos for being bad at their job? I’m confused.

My point

was that rather than see refs actually & truly decide games by calling ticky-tack fouls, that last sequence allowed the players to settle the outcome in live action, rather than at the line for hair-trigger foul calls. Yes, I saw the League’s statement — I disagree, and suspect it was largely the result of Mark Cuban’s incessant & insufferable whining.

by KC Gunner on May 9, 2009 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

So ...

you’re telling that a ref not calling a foul that is called 100 out of 100 times is a good thing? And I don’t see how that is not deciding the outcome, since they are paid to do their jobs, and that’s to call fouls when they happen. When they don’t do it, they suck on their jobs. Also, if you tell me that the nba assumed an error because someone is complaining, they are even more wrong.

by hugommorais on May 9, 2009 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

A) it’s obviously not called a foul 100 out of 100 times, as this was not called a foul
B) I don’t think it was clearly a foul.

It degrades the sport to see the rules abused in this way — decided games at the line robs the sport of excitement. Watching games decided in live action is far preferable, and the refs ought to make that happen. And to the extent it is difficult for them to do so, the rules ought to be changed to give an extra free throw in situations like this (more particularly, the situation where a team is up 3 and seeks to use a quick, lame foul to limit their opponent to 2 — that ought to be an intentional foul, 2 shots & the ball. And this situation too.)

by KC Gunner on May 9, 2009 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't get it.

How is it not a foul when the league admitted it was a foul?

ok ...

A) right, it’s called 99 out of 100 times … and that one that is out, is the one that the nba admits it’s wrong, so … 100 out of 100 …
B) that was a foul and it was clear …

I agree that it could be reviewed in some way … But unless they change the rules, the one that applys now would call for a foul and an inbound play. This sport is executed that way for decades, i don’t think the game 3 of this series would be a good moment to change it …

by hugommorais on May 9, 2009 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Dallas a had a foul to give in that situation. They weren’t trying to send Denver to the line, you moron.

Wes is a bigger man than I...

How can you take yourself seriously and say that the refs didn’t decide the game? Can you help us out and let us know what to do next game so that Wright’s foul isn’t “ticky-tack”? Should he push him into the stands? Wait, that’s a Flagrant 1 right? And, for God’s sake, please do not start in on Cuban. I would challenge you to find any CEO in the corporate world that would be ok with his company getting a big sale, only to having it taken away, because they signed the dotted line, but they didn’t press the paper hard enough.

Yeah, it was a foul

Ignore the thuggetz fans that come to gloat and sit on a high horse about the win, they are a few amongst many. At times the officials were allowing very physical play and hacks at the ball on drives to the basket, while also calling ridiculous off the ball flops and touch fouls on normal contact battling for position. The result was a 3 hour long free throw shooting contest with no opportunity for either team to move the ball or attack on defense. Both teams deserve to compete with the same fair and square standards which didn’t happen.

But, in my opinion the intentional foul did not prevent a shot or leave no choicebut for the ref to call it. Melo deserves credit for playing it through and hitting the game winner.

That was just not a fun game to watch.

I’m a nuggets fan, and that win wasn’t enjoyable at all. The whole game just felt like one giant joke. There was a point in the game where about 8 offensive possessions in a row ended with a foul, 4 on each time. When the refs take over, it sucks for everyone. You won’t hear me gloating over the win. I’d rather just wipe that game from the records, and play game 3 all over again.

How terrible is that?? The fact that the league admitted their mistake heartbreaking for you?? So badly, you had to blame that one on Mark Cuban? You have NOTHING to gripe about. So shut up and head on back home now, ya hear??

Good question ...

The rockets is other team that are totally screwed by the nba wanting the lakers on the finals … Kobe had to be suspended, the foul Artest received a flagrant 2 was 40% of the foul Dirk received from Martin in the first game or even the elbow he received from Kobe … Also, Yao is out too now …
But the mavs are, as always, screwed by the refs, have an aging roster and lots of decisions to make …

Honestly.

This game made me log in for the first time this entire season. I’ve been watching, just not commenting since I’ve been all over the place with work and moving and such. Aaaaaand that honestly might be the last basketball game I watch. If there’s any doubt that the league has a thumb on the scales of the game, that settles it.

If they honestly cared about the “integrity of the game” then they’d release that entire officiating crew. When a ref fucks up the final play of a second round playoff game, with the action happening less than 3 feet away from him, as he’s looking at it, and the league admits the wrong call was made less than 3 hours after the game is over… Well, if they don’t have the accountability to fire that official, then they’re admitting they don’t care about getting the outcome of the games correct.

From now on, I think I’ll stick to boxing. At least then everyone knows when the fights are rigged, and you can tell when a guy’s taking a dive.

I thought Josh was good today

So was Bass, since he was doing the work inside. For me, it’s Terry who has failed to step up. He hit a big 3 today, but he hasn’t been playing JET-like since he’s won the award (sorry, I keep saying that, but it’s true).

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

by Marie on May 10, 2009 1:55 AM CDT up reply actions

If anything

I would hope this series can kill the “Dirk can’t win big games” argument. Because, uh, Dirk’s been pretty effing awesome this series. I think what’ it’s shown is that any superstar level player can’t win if he’s out there by himself. Damp’s been a complete waste of flesh this entire series. Honestly, Bass should just play center the whole next game.

by BrodyV on May 10, 2009 1:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Most Dirk bashing is way off base. He does just about everything you can ask a person to do, but he is just one of five people the Mavs can put on the court at any given time. If one person can really carry an entire team by themselves, then where are all the championships Kobe Bryant won without Shaq? Where are Lebron James’ rings again? Where are all the banners from those times Kevin Garnett won all those championships in Minnesota?

Call Dirk soft on defense all you want, but he is our offense. What about all the guys on our team who are soft on defense and don’t contribute to offense?

by Doctor_Apocalypse on May 10, 2009 2:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Unfortunately

the DFW is filled with fairweather sports fans. I’m sure a billion of them are running to jump on the bandwagon for the 2009 Texas Rangers.

A lot of Dirk’s naysayers are these jokes of sports fans who probably take a casual interest in sport, swallow a lot of what the mainstream sports media gives them, and uses that as a base to proclaim Dirk as a choker. There are a ton of “common” fans from other teams who say that too, but I can’t blame them too much as ignorant since they obviously don’t follow the Mavs and what Dirk has achieved in the playoffs.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

by Marie on May 10, 2009 2:57 PM CDT reply actions

They reviewed the sequence. But according to NBA rules only to see if it was a three (it was) or a two. Not if there was anything else going on.

They reviewed a sequence in the last Kings vs. Spurs game, but only to determine if Finley stepped on the line, not to determine if the shot clock had expired (it had).

They replayed the final of a game Hawks vs. Heat last year. But only because the refs or scorekeepers couldn’t accurately count to 6 fouls.

The league needs some better review rules. A head umpire who sits further away and maybe watches a replay monitor. Challenge flags. Better training of the refs. Better accountability. More transparency towards the fans why a rule is like such and such. Something. But I and many other people already wrote them that. And what you get back is the standard letter I posted yesterday already. I just hope the sheer volume of people complaining makes them realize there is a problem that people won’t tolerate much longer.

First of all

we lost this game because we didn’t keep taking it to the rim while Anderson was fouled out and Nene was sitting on 5 fouls.

Second, we lost this game because Josh is still too hurt (even though he played a decent game) to play with the level that he played in the first series vs. the Spurs.

But most importantly, I think we lost this game because Jet, Dirk and Josh all missed free throws in the final few minutes of the game.

It sucks that the refs decided the final few seconds for us. But we should never have been in that position…we should’ve been up 6 or more with Nene sitting out.

But I can’t get it out of my mind how the NBA can blow a call like that, admit that they blew it, yet offer no recourse for us. This was huge. This was a free road victory for the Nuggets. And basically, hence, a free series victory.
