Mavs do they make the bold moves?
I have been an avid Mavs fan for years now and every off season I see a lot of the same stuff and its mostly a bunch of hype. Not saying I haven’t got excited about some of them but usually at the end of the year I ma saying why didn’t the Mavs make that move they could have… I have seen Raef, Tim Hardaway, Nick Van Exel, Antwone Walker and Antwone Jamison, Steve Nash leave Devin Harris in, Bradley gone Damp in , Devan gone, Kidd in and about 20 euros Wang, and Najera. But one thing is definitely evident Donnie Nelson and Cuban always seem to make a move when they should stand pact or they sit still when they should make a move. I don’t know what it is with those guys they have no gut instinct and try thinking outside of the box way too much its over rated.
So this is what I am seeing with most Mavs fans on Mavs Moneyball
- Most everybody loves the Gortat deal
- Most everybody loves the Marion deal
- Most every body hates that Bass is gone
Are you really sure your going to like these moves a year from now?
“Don’t let the smooth taste fool ya.”
With those moves we are still behind SA, LA, and Denver in the West, still behind Detroit, Boston, and Cleveland in the East.
They seem great now even to me. Only because at least we are doing something even if its signing Marion who is the same player as Howard they can co-exist right? and maybe they will... it makes them versatile that’s for sure. It makes them huge from shooting guard through center also make them very athletic.
Lets look at 2010. Jake made some pretty good points in his post “The Damp Bombshell” definitely a lot too get excited about with that post believe me the idea of having a player like Dwayne Wade here excites the hell out of me but lets be realistic and I am definitely not trying to take away anything from Jakes post I thought it was great insight lets just say I am playing devils advocate. There are 4 coveted free agents James, Wade, Bosh and Joe Johnson. We know that Lebron is very unlikely, Bosh we don’t need if we are going to keep Dirk so he’s out so let’s just say for laughs there is a 50 percent chance that Wade and Joe Johnson could come to Dallas. Keep in mind Dallas isn’t really a Big Market NBA town…and we have really never ever been able to get a big time player through free agency…its always through trades or the drafts. So I am going to go out on a limb here and say we don’t get any of those players and lets say Donnie and Mark are realistic in thinking “ hey lets not jack around and hope we can land one of those players lets take advantage of our opportunity now”.
What could they do and probably wont. One of the readers brought up the idea for trading Damp for Rip Hamilton in the community fan post section. If you convince your self the coveted 2010 free agents won’t come to Dallas and history plus probability tells us that it won’t happen. I would say go for it. Keep Marion and Howard give up Damp get Hamilton. That move alone would make Dallas one of the deepest teams in the league, one of the most experienced teams in the league, it would make them athletic and by far the most versatile team in the league Coaches and yes even the “Zen Master” Phil Jackson would loose sleep trying to figure out the match up problems Dallas would give. I already know a lot of you might think it’s not realistic or it’s not a good idea etc.
I don’t know I am just saying if there is away to be a real threat in this league for once and not just try to keep up with SA and LA and not sit on your hands hoping for the Messiah I would rather have something solid you know is tangible than the hope for Wade.
Potentially if Dallas were to make a move for Hamilton and maybe make a move for lets say Tyson Chandler or Kwame Brown on paper Dallas would be the team to beat at least on paper and a very well balanced team with a pretty good coach to lead the way.
Think about these line ups Kidd-PG – Hamilton SG – Howard SF – Dirk PF- Gortat C Bench Terry, Marion, Barea, Chandler/ Brown or you could do a line up like this Kidd PG , Hamilton SG, Howard SF , Marion PF, Dirk C.
Even if you weren’t able to do a deal involving Chandler or Brown…Dallas would still be hard to deal with.
Detroit definitely needs a center Dallas needs a PROVEN shooting guard. If the above line ups don’t sound like they could compete with SA and LA. I don’t know what does. And if your going to say Wade sounds great well that’s obvious but keep in mind he has to get his touches excessively to be affective. Hamilton is one of the best moving off the ball. And seems like a way better fit with Dirk and Kidd.

I like Rip Hamilton, but.. .
Let’s run with what we got this year. I know that it doesn’t seem feasible to land Dwayne Wade, but if we are patient and can contend with what we got now this year and hopefully win at least 50 games and a solid playoff run, then we will be able to offer Wade more money AND a better situation then ANYONE. True, we are a smaller market team. But just pretend you are Dwayne Wade. Dallas is offering you the most money as well as the best chance to win a championship. A line up of Wade, Kidd, Marion, Dirk, Howard, Terry.. as well as whoever else you throw in there.. is a championship team. I think when Wade considers either getting paid more and winning a few more rings in Dallas as opposed to playing for a “big-market” team for less money and fewer wins, he’ll make the smarter decision. I just hope the Mavs exhibit patience so that they can at least present him this offer next year.
And really… Kwame Brown? No thanks. Ever. Keep him away.

Another Hamilton trade suggestion....
yay.
Yes it would be a good move. Of course it is, your trading Damp for a real player. I doubt it happens though. Dumars isn’t a fool, Damp is not gonna be the big they’re looking for in Detroit. The only way it gets done is if, the Mavs can convince him that the Dust chip would be worth it.
Bottom line, Prince goes before Hamilton if at all.

In all fairness
Joe Dumars is the guy that traded Billups for AI semmed pretty foolish to me. Damp would obviosly be valuable because of the non garanteed contract and can stil be utilized as a somewhat servicable center. And why would Detroit get rid of there only 3 Prince when they are back logged at 2 Ben Gordon and Hamilton? And yeah it gets brought up alot because its a move they should make.

Hindsight
on the AI trade. IIn all fairness nobody knew Iverson would implode they way he did when he got to Detroit. And Billups wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire before it happened. Worse case scenario they figured AI would drop 20 a night and they’d lose a defensive edge with him out there.
And as far as playing time for both. There’s still 30 minutes a night there with Gordon, Hamilton and Prince playing the 2/3 positions, plus Gordon backing up Stuckey at the one in spurts. The trade wouldn’t exactly improve the Mavs all that much anyway. We’d still be a jump shooting team, with no offensive inside presence and a soft interior with Dirk in the game.
Adding Hamilton seems pretty redundant to me. Yeah he’s good and I’d take him over Howard, he’s a winner and would be an improvement but that would be a minor offensive improvement in efficiency and he’ s not the disruptive defender Josh is.

LOL what does Detroit suck ???
Detroits alot younger team than Dallas and play in an easier division they just signed to young free agents in Gordon and Villanueva they also have 2 promising also young players in Jason Maxiel and definitely in Rodney Stucky …Not to mention Prince and Hamilton so yeah I think they are pretty good. Not sure whats so funny about that????

I still don't get why people assume we're behind San Antonio AND Denver
pick one. But not both. I think we’re top 3 in the West with the moves we’ve made so far. Just because the Spurs might get a fully healthy Manu back (not a guarantee) and picked up Richard Jefferson doesn’t mean they are now better than us. And just because Denver beat us handily without our 2nd best player completely healthy means that they can do the same with the moves we’ve made and a healthy Josh Howard this year. I think there’s a chance we’re # 2 in this conference, and a chance we’re # 4, but most likely # 3. And I don’t consider Portland ready to take over considering how well we play against them and the fact that they haven’t made any significant moves.
We picked up an impact, former All Star SF that allows us to move another former All Star that was at SF to SG, plugging a HUGE hole. We also picked up what could possibly be a HUGE addition at C. At worst, we are now 3 deep there, all are quality players and bring something different, and we have 18 fouls to use there in 2009/2010. At best, we have the C of the future that can actually move well with or without the ball, catch, and finish at the rim. We drafted a PG prospect that, with his speed, athleticism and arm span, can immediately help to guard some of the Chris Paul/Deron Williams type PGs in the league when necessary and will learn from the best PG in the game how to become an effective distributor. That was a huge need on this team.
This team will rebound, defend, score and outrun the team from last year…and with Jason Kidd at the helm, that’s important.
