An NBA source has told the Orlando Sentinel that the Orlando Magic will match the five-year, $34-million offer sheet extended by the Dallas Mavericks to Marcin Gortat and thus retain him. The team would not be able to trade him until Dec. 15, at the earliest, if that's what the team wants to do.

Well, either they don’t trade Damp now or they go after Kaman or some Euro center. Or a lot of Dirk on C.

LeBron really likes Orlando's moves too.

I liked signing Gortat to an offer sheet b/c I knew Dallas would either get 1.) a young center w/ potential OR 2.) a chance to put Orlando into the luxury tax. Otis decided to be a douche so his fate is sealed. Gortat wasn’t ever going to be the piece that put Dallas over the edge but now they have no choice but to be patient. If Dallas can pick up someone like Joe Johnson w/ the dust chip & someone like Kaman between now & then, maybe Otis will invite you brain dead Magic fans to his Mavs/Cavs Finals watching party. So….thanks for putting the money on the dresser but there’s something we forgot to tell you beforehand.

So, I understand that we're screwed

But I’m confused as to why you’re so happy that Orlando’s paying $10M+/year for a mediocre PF and a center who has logged fewer league minutes than Travis Diener.

I might not be so mad if Orlando didn’t get Bass and if the Mavs didn’t help them with the Hedo trade. I hate the thought of being stuck with Damp even longer with no better option at the 5. But I feel awful for Gortat, since he was really looking forward to finally getting more minutes and perhaps stepping out from Dwight Howard’s shadow.

At least its a contract year for Damp

That’s gotta be motivation for him to actually perform decently right? We need to resign Hollins and Singleton now for sure. Maybe we can pull off some kind of trade to get a new center. I’d still hate to use Damp’s Dust chip to do it though. I really want to try and get Joe Johnson with that.

I guess you didn't see Rashard posting up Thaddeus Young in the playoffs and scoring 30 a game

He could do that cause he played against another SF not a PF.. And yes we still have the roster flexibility to play him at the 4

by Souwantmyname on Jul 13, 2009 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the "natural position" thing is a matter of, literally, position

where you get to operate on the court. If you’re Lewis, you can roam pretty much anywhere (kinda like Dirk). It only becomes an issue if the said position is the baseline/paint area; see Shaq/Amare.

by ptrck on Jul 13, 2009 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree completely

but when Shard plays against bigger PF’s his post up game is taken away. As a SF he now has the freedom to “roam”

The Magic couldn’t play that way cause we had to put Hedo and Lewis on the court at the same time. Plus we didn’t have a good enough PF to start. We have that now in Bass (who I now love after watching him on youtube)

by Souwantmyname on Jul 13, 2009 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You have to wonder if that 4-way trade allowed the Magic to retain Gortat.

The Magic probably got $3 million to help facilitate the Hedo sign and trade. That might help them ease the financial fallout of the Gortat offer this year.

Did the Mavs get outmaneuvered or are did the Magic simply decide to overpay?

Donnie and Mark had every reason to believe there would be no matching offer. The Magic had every right to match and pay the tax. What budged here? Did Donnie and Mark simply get caught with their pants downs? They obviously thought they were pretty smart, getting all their big moves done early on… I dunno. It seems like both happened at the same time.

by jam0152 on Jul 13, 2009 4:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it was reasonable to expect that the Magic wouldn’t match, given how far over the cap they are already (plus whatever else Otis might’ve insinuated behind closed doors). Basically, the Magic are going all-in with the expectation that they’ve done enough in the off-season to put them over the top (including retaining a legitimate backup to Dwight). However, I personally don’t think they have . . . I’d rather have Hedo than Vince, and all of the rest of their moves don’t amount to much. So, in that sense, one could argue that they’re overpaying for what they’ve got.

Carter's play with Magic?

Carter is much better shooter, more athletic, and better overall than Hedo. Did you all forget that Carter is finally playing with a dominant big man and is playing in his hometown. Motivation is not a problem. BTW motivation wasn’t the problem in New Jersey either. Way to hate with the stereotyping. Makes perfect sense to keep Gortat. Magic not in running for 2010 FA since their lineup is set for years. Magic got deeper while getting younger this offseason. Otis is the Man!

Motivation was not a problem with Carter? Then we must have watched two different Carters the last few years.

A motivated Carter is a much different Carter, but he irregularly showed up in NJ. As I said I like the acquisition for the Magic, it makes sense to try and contend now with that lineup.

good move

I know you guys are disapointed but as a magic fan this is great news we have the best centre in the NBA and a good player in Gortat backing him up , Otis is looking at the big picture , your see in december he will trade Gortat and use the 9 million to get a top player , maybe Bosh . they may throw in a JJ …. i love the mavs and your owner is awsome , the only owner who interacts with the away crowd .

Whoa

I am a Magic fan and there is no sense hating on Otis like he deliberately screwed the Mavs. The trade exception for Hedo has nothing to do with this, it saved us no money or cap space. In fact he already had said he would not participate, so he helped you guys get the Matrix by doing the sign and trade. The trade exception is porbably worthless (especially now if we get Gortat) because it can only be used in a trade and in doing so would only increase our luxury tax, which is highly unlikely when all is said and done this free agency.

I am very happy and surprised that (if) the Magic do this because Gortat is a great player. And if any team was going to get him I would be happy for the Mavs, but I don’t see how this is a deliberate bendd over move. The Mavs signed a restricted free agent, the Magic matched, it isn’t like there was some arrangement, the Mavs went after Gortat from the outset. Oh well, if the Magic lost out on a player I would be angry too I suppose, but can we at least debase the Magic GM a little less vulgarly?

You're right, he certainly didn't pay a guy $34 million to "deliberately screw the Mavs."

But this still sucks, and, really, doesn’t make a damn bit of sense for the Magic. Yes, Gortat is a good up-and-comer. But this is a little like signing Aaron Rodgers to go play QB for the Colts or Patriots.

You simply don’t pay a back-up center 8 digits over 5 years. Especially if you’re the same team that couldn’t afford to bring Turkoglu back.

This is the height of stupidity to me...

Essentially paying $68M for a guy that will back up your best player and AT MOST play ~20 minutes a night makes very, very little sense financially…

Dwight Howard is going to play 35 minutes a night… Brandon Bass wouldn’t have signed there unless he was assured he’d see a spike in minutes from the 20 or so a night he played in Dallas… I just don’t get it…

Gortat is a good basketball player… But he’s not $34M PLUS the luxury tax on a small market team, backing up the best young center in basketball good… $68M for the role he’ll play is retarded…

More power to Otis Smith, I guess… Seems in bad taste and highly stupid, but whatever…

by N41D on Jul 13, 2009 6:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Here is the Genius in it

We retain a superior backup center in Marcin Gortat.

Allowing Brandon Bass to compete for the STARTING PF position with newly acquired Ryan Anderson as his backup.

This moves Michael Pietrus back to bench behind Rashard where he thrived last season 4 the Magic.

This or next year we can then move Gortat with the TPE for a major NBA player (Bosh/Wade)

This move has solidified or roster and allowed us to have future trade possibilities. Thus its GENIUS

It seems in bad taste

To a Mavs fan, it seems in good taste to Magic fans. Gortat is a great center, I feel bad that he isn’t going to showcase his talents more, but if you can pay a starting quality center MLE money, its a good buy. We will just pretend Howard is making double money. Besides this is the team that paid Rashard a gazillion dollars. I am shocked though. The Magic needed a backup center though and would’ve had to pay for one either way, and Howard gets into foul trouble a lot! Makes sense in that regard.

I am a Magic Fan

And I would like to think I am not that obnoxious. I am also a Mark Cuban/Dirk (thus Dallas) fan, I love owners that are in your face, and think it should still be allowed. Alas, I think the Orlando move was extremely smart although costly, and it is a shame that Dallas will miss out though. I think the guy could have been great on a spaced out jump shooting Mavs team.

But I still say some people in here are just if not more rude than the Souw/banned guy. Of course in saying things like this I have already received some derogatory remarks thrown my way. There is no place in any blog for that kind of smack talk. I come here to talk basketball, I was happy for you guys when I thought you were going to get Gortat, now I am happy for Orlando. It seems like everytime Dallas has something good going, someone or something comes along and always fucks it up. Can we for once get something going our way, thats not to much to ask is it? Otis Smith, FUCK YO THOUGHTS!!
