Mavs rookie Beaubois hurts knee and leaves game

LAS VEGAS — Dallas’ promising rookie Roddy Beaubois suffered a left knee injury in the final minute against Phoenix. The point guard was in considerable pain on the court and had to be helped to the locker room, but said he was fine after the game.

"I knew it wasn’t bad," he said. "I’m just sensitive on that part."

Beaubois said he’s hurt the inside of his knee before and whenever he aggravates that area there is a jolt of pain. He had an ice pack taped to his knee and was walking without help after.

The 25th pick didn’t put any pressure on his left leg immediately after getting hurt. The 21-year-old French speedster has been one of the standouts so far in Summer League and was having another strong game before going down.

The initial diagnosis is a left knee contusion. Further tests likely are not are needed. The Mavs are off tomorrow, practice Wednesday and play again Thursday. Beaubois expects to play.

Beaubois has been blowing by foes so far, showing off the quickness that impressed Mavs officials before the Draft. He is expected to be the third point guard this season behind Jason Kidd and J.J. Barea.

He had 16 points and three assists in 26 minutes at the time of the injury, and his 34 points Saturday are a Summer League high.
