What's your opinion re: Marion/Gortat

I'd like to get people's opinion - perhaps some with a better understanding of the cap...

What would've happened if the Mavs didn't trade for Marion. The sentiment I felt was that Miami was going to be forced to release him. In that case - we'd just sign him to the same contract we did.

Did the financial flexibility that went to Orlando (trade exception) make them any more likely to match Gortat's offer sheet?

First I think you mean Toronto

not Miami. Also, the trade exception they received for Hedo was not something they could use to resign Gortat, it can only be used in a trade. They will have to pay the luxury tax now that they are keeping Gortat. Also, we could not have gotten Marion w/o doing a sign and trade because we are over the cap and only have the MLE to offer to a free agent. This way, Toronto signed him and traded him to us for George, Wright, and Stackhouse (who then went to Memphis)

No - I mean Orlando.

My contention is that Marion wouldve been released – the MLE was the most he’d be offered, we’d sign him – Orlando received cash (along with the exception) in the deal, that made them more likely to match Gortat’s offer. They’ll then trade Gortat if he’s not being utilized later on for an expiring deal, and picks or something to keep their team young.

Meanwhile, we’ll just keep on getting older.

I'll be honest...

I liked Gortat A LOT…

But now go out and get Lamar Odom maybe, and then go out and get CHRIS WILCOX… I’d bet we’d get the same production from him we’d have gotten from Gortat when he’s paired with Jason Kidd… That’s the kind of guy Kidd makes a star…

Odom won’t take the MLE to play in Dallas. He won’t get 10 mil/year either but at the end of the day the Lakers will give him 7-8 and that will be that. Wilcox is certainly better than Ryan Hollins and likely won’t get the full MLE. With the slim pickings out there, he might be our best bet (unless we can find a way to get David Lee for the full MLE of course and somehow ensure New York won’t match…like that’ll happen)

I'll be really honest...

Gortat averaged about 3 & 3 w/ Orlando last year & that’s w/o as much front court depth as they have now. All he has is potential which will not ever be realized under Dwight Howard. It’s a shame for him b/c he would’ve had opportunities here but I wouldn’t shed too many tears if I were Mavs mgmt. It’s about time to reload at that position anyway. Now Cubes has a chance to bring in someone who is more of a sure bet.

well sure bets aren't going to fall in your lap at C

and Gortat WAS the “reload at that position.” I’m upset we don’t get to see him blossom here.

At the same time, you are correct – he wasn’t a SURE THING. So not too worried there – we’ve still shored up our weaknesses at a few positions, and if we can find a way to score more at the starting SG slot with Howard there, and Terry brings his 18 ppg off the bench, we’ll be fine. II would like Chris Wilcox on this team, though…

I'd rather have Diogu

than Wilcox. Cheaper w/more upside and a better defender IMO. That said, I’d be content w/Wilcox

This was funny. Google’s auto-fill came up with “Ike Diogu girlfriend” which produced a link to this bizarre page. What. The. Fuck.

Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
