ah, drew gooden, everyone's second choice. he and carroll will swap some crazy stories, i'm sure.

I mean, I guess it would just be a guy who you know, grabs bananas and runs. Or, um, a banana that grabs things. I don’t know. Why would a banana grab another banana? I mean, those are the kind of questions I don’t want to answer.

Shitty deal

but fairly good signing, I suppose…if he has better hands than Damp. Then again, that’s not very hard.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

Okay... getting a little nauseous now.

Quick, someone convince me this is a good idea.

It’s not that he can’t play, because he can. With Marion and now Gooden, the offense is looking championship caliber. I just get this “I never give more than just enough” vibe from the guy.

I think if you put two of my best seasons together it wouldn't come up with the numbers he's going to have at the end of the season. -Troy Aikman on Tony Romo

by Big D Bam Bam on Jul 26, 2009 7:10 AM CDT reply actions

I don't get that from him

I get the “I’m a little crazy in the head” vibe, which is missing on this team. Now we have Marion and Gooden to bring that component

In other mediocre news, Sarunas Jasikevicius extends with Panathinaikos Athens

This means a lot less minutes for unsigned Mavs draft pick Nick Calathes behind Greek-standout Dimitris Diamantidis and Jasikevicius. Both are tall players who can play both guard spots, like Calathes. And on SG there is also Drew Nicholas and Vassilis Spanoulis.

It’s a bit of the same problem that Jennings had last year: He selected a team that is too good.

by Norsktroll on Jul 26, 2009 7:22 AM CDT reply actions

I think

this signing is mostly because we needed another center to ensure Damp’s minutes don’t get above the maximum amount he can play without guaranteeing his contract for next season.

He has his warts but he’s still serviceable and at the price paid he may be worth and I don’t mean just on the court but in a trade come Feb. Great signing if he helps out our team then good if he sucks underachieves then he’s another expiring come trade deadline. But make no mistake his name still has value alone once you package it with one of our assets in my opinion.

I don't see this as a bad deal

although Gooden has never been on of my favorite players, he’s capable of taking over Brandon’s spot. 6’10" vs 6’6" makes a lot of difference. Don’t get me wrong….I LOVED Brandon but was he really worth a 3 or 4 yr contract at $18mil+? I’m not so sure about that. Gooden is capable of scoring double digits on any given night and career wise his numbers are better than Brandons. I don’t think he fit in well with the Spurs system and was depended on too much by them. Gooden will help here, but won’t be the go-to guy. A MAJOR plus also is this is just a one year contract. And hell, the MAVS don’t even have to keep him that long if he ends up being a bust. After December they can kick his ass out the door if they so choose. This signing still gives us flexibility this off-season to sign someone else and still helps us to be players in 2010. While Gooden certainly wasn’t my first choice (I would’ve been happier with Harkim Warrick), Gooden is certainly not a bad choice either.

by Cynthia56 on Jul 26, 2009 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

I like this.

A lot better than the alternatives, anyways. Leon Powe was my guy, but he’s hurt for several more months. Gooden can score a little and rebound, plus he’s an extra body down low. If Nivins works out, great – if not, we’re fine in the front court for a few months until we use the Buck Shot, if that’s the case

One other thing....

David Lord @ dallasbasketball.com is reporting that they are chasing a story about an “unnoticed surprise” in this deal regarding agents, money and connections. So as we get more info this deal might look better and better to all of us.

by Cynthia56 on Jul 26, 2009 12:47 PM CDT reply actions

Well ... Good signing ...

Unless we wanted Magloire here and all that … He is a still young guy, who will not need to have a big role. Just go out there and play 25 minutes a game or something like that. He will be another expiring contrat in February, and if he is not trader by then he will be on a contract year, so maybe he will play a little harder. He can be a double-double guy and is a fairly good replacement for Dirk and someone that can play the C in front of our fantastic Dampier. I don’t see the minuses here, Bass was good and all, but he was basically a 6-7 player good on offense and really bad at Defense, Gooden is good on offense too and is 6-10, maybe he can take some big guys that Bass couldn’t on D.

We are really improved this year. A lineup of Kidd, Terry, Josh, Marion and Dirk to finish games has a lot of flexibility on both offense and defense, specially with Ross, Dampier, Gooden, Hollins and Barea coming off the bench.

by hugommorais on Jul 26, 2009 12:52 PM CDT reply actions

I wouldn't say Bass was bad on D

he owned Tim Duncan, and that in its own right is pretty admirable

Like it...

Don’t care about money on a one-year deal.. It’s irrelevant…

He’s a guy that can do some things offensively with his back to the basket and should play well paired with Dirk.. He rebounds well, he’s fairly physical, and he doesn’t have to play a ton of minutes or carry much a load…

He’ll contribute and he brings an added asset as a decent sized expiring contract if the Mavs decide to make a trade later in the year…

a post up player who can sit on the block and has to be guarded. He is 3rd or 4th scoring option in crunch time. I think it’s a great 1 year deal.

by srdmad on Jul 26, 2009 9:22 PM CDT reply actions

They are playing different positions. Not that I think it’s a bad deal. But this team is short 1 center, unless you want to see Kidd, Terry, Howard, Marion, Nowitzki all the time (which is probably often the lineup to end close games, but while he doesn’t get enough credit for his rebounding Dirk has some trouble against physical big men).

by Norsktroll on Jul 27, 2009 7:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Gooden's deal more valuable than initially thought

Rotoworld breaks it down nicely here

Drew Gooden’s one-year contract with the Mavericks is only partially guaranteed for about $1.9 million, according to DallasBasketball.com. Essentially, the Mavericks have structured the deal to give themselves maximum flexibility and value. They can trade Gooden for up to $5.7 million between December 15th and January 10th, and the team who acquires him will be able to “waive him, take the cap relief and not pay a penny of salary.” The Mavs might not trade him if he’s filling a valuable role in the frontcourt, but at least they have a few outs.

dallasbasketball.com has the full story.
