Rick Carlisle is a smart, charming, lovable, funny guy. He really is.
He also has widespread interests. [It is rumored that he graduated.] Be it playing table tennis (ping pong)....
or the piano - he is multifaceted, just like Dirk (was).
He also is quite full of himself (at least in some areas of public perception, most notable DFW media). A sarcastic schmock, incapable of fullfilling all of their needs, walking with an aura of being the smartest asshole in the room. "A sucker in my book" - to paraphrase Jerry Stackhouse.
Where does this go? Jump out of the window to find out.
Rick Carlisle loves to use the phrase " our undoing was the ___________".
What does that even mean, "undoing"?
UN-DO-ING
Pronunciation: \-ˈdü-iŋ\ Function: noun Date: 14th century1 : an act of loosening : unfastening
2 : ruin; also : a cause of ruin <greed was to prove his undoing>
3 : annulment, reversal
Ok, whatever, i continue to view it as an euphemism for "we sucked hard at".
He probably mentioned it after every loss, but here are just some blatant examples (that i have linkable proof of).
Mavs vs Cavs | November 28th, 2009
DALLAS HEAD COACH RICK CARLISLE
(On Mavericks defense): "We needed to be better defensively. Simple as that. You give up 68 percent field goal shooting in the first half, you’re going to be behind. And, we were fortunate to be 13 (points) down at that point. We were better in the second half, but when we got some stops, we weren’t able to convert on offense, so, hey, our undoing was the first half when we just didn’t do the job we needed to do defensively."
Mavs vs Rockets | December 31st, 2009
COACH RICK CARLISLE
(on the game) "Our undoing was a sluggish first quarter. Houston hit us with early transition points and three’s. The rest of the game was about even. With a team like this you have to come out with energy early or you are in trouble."
Mavs vs Raptors | January 17th, 2010
MAVS HEAD COACH RICK CARLISLE
On the second quarter … The second quarter was our undoing. When they scored 34, we scored 18. [Captain Obvious speaking here] Turnovers led to uncontested shots. We went through a drought. When you go through a drought, you have to stop them. We didn’t do it. The end result is a loss.
Mavs vs Sixers | January 22th, 2010
MAVS HEAD COACH RICK CARLISLE
"Our undoing was our inability to get anything consistently going offensively or defensively. We had small spurts, but we never sustained it. The end result is a loss, which is disappointing."
This undoing thang is driving everyone insane. It's terrifying. The universe stops for a second when Rick pulls it out. The french call it "La petite mort", the little death.
Here are some reactions.
Coach Carlisle mentioned your undoing, what do you think?
Ey JKIDD, did he just say it?!
Hold me Dirk, i fear he's about to say it!
Hmpf, they play no defense and let Josh figure out the offense.......Time to pull the undoing card...
Even opposing coaches fear it. And rightfully so.
[No Caption necessary. Really]
And of course, everyone's favorite Owner gets disturbed by "it", too.
WTF, is this a bad dream?
And, to paraphrase our very first and last commenter.....
What can i say ? I can say: Make sure to check back, because the undoing movement [pause] ...will continue. And you can bet all of #5's BBIQ that i will update this post when it happens. Gambling restrictions prohibit me from taking a significant wager. Low stakes, it's called.
Update:
And sure enough, after a nice little trade + winstreak, the Undoing is back
Mavs vs Celtics | March 20, 2010
Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle
"With the exception of the period in the fourth, we were playing from behind for most of the night. That made it tough. We got a seven point lead. You’ve got to be able to get some stops. We didn’t get stops. That was our undoing."
Mavs vs Hornets | March 22, 2010
Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle
On the game: "The first quarter we were extremely aggressive and were guarding them (the Hornets) well. Our undoing was clearly the second and third quarter. Also our turnovers, when you turn it over 25 times for 35 points, it’s going to be hard to win a game. The Hornets took advantage of the forced turnovers they created. I just have to give credit to a good team, they drop five in a row and came here tonight ready to play."
Playoffs Appearances:
Game 4 vs Spurs
When asked what Dallas has done well these past two games - "I thought we played hard, we battled. Again there are a number of plays that we have to be the aggressor on and we didn’t do that tonight. We didn’t shoot well early, but we were very aggressive and very strong willed. The other part of our undoing was the third quarter. We had 7 or 8 turnovers and shot 27 or 28% then the Spurs got on a run that we needed to stave off sooner."
Game 6 vs Spurs
"The first quarter has been a big story in this series," he said. "It was our undoing tonight."
