Dallas Snails
Matt Moore from Hardwood Paroxysm takes a look into Usage and PER. Check it out, very interesting.
Take those stats with a grain of salt, but don't ignore them.
Here are the relevant Mavs stats.
Usage:

That’s a healthy team, right there. Superstar getting buckets, two primary supporting members with high percentages, support team, and the aging point guard keeping his shots to himself. For the life of me, I can’t figure out what makes Drew Gooden consistently push his way to the front half. He did this with SAS last year. Can’t figure out why, though. Barea being the halfway mark is pretty spot-on for this team. Gotta be perplexed by Beaubois here. Rookies should not be outshooting Jason Terry on a veteran-heavy-rotation team. Some shots? Good. That many? Eeeee.
PER vs Usage

JUB-JUB VERSUS BEAUBOIS, THE DEBATE RAGES ON
Throw out Matt Carrol and Kris Humphries/triggerhappy Singleton and you'll see that efficient usage comes from damp, dirk, kidd, marion, gooden, Terry, Beaubois/JJ. Josh is really struggling.
As for Roddy's usage, well, two words: Shooting Guard. Or if you like that better : DAMN ACTIVE.

yep
Well, Josh is not a bad offensive player per se. In fact, this season he shoots 68% at the rim, 50 % from < 10 feet. But those combine only for 3 of his 11.2 FGA. The big culprit is that he is atrocious from 10-15 feet [26.8%], putrid from 16-23 feet [33%] and heinous from 3point range [38,7 % eFG], with the vast majority of his shots at those locations.
The League averages are 60.6% at the rim, 43.8% from < 10 feet, 40% from 10-15 feet , 39.8% from 16-23 feet and 52.7 eFG% from three.
It is perhaps more intriguing to account these percentages into Points per shot. [PPS]
So while the league avg is 1.21 PPS at the rim, Josh scores 1.36 at the rim.
Avg <10 feet leaguewide = 0.87 PPS, Josh = 1.00 PPS
Avg 10-15 feet leaguewide = 0.80 PPS, Josh = 0.53 PPS
Avg 16-23 feet leaguewide = 0.796 PPS, Josh = 0.66 PPS
Avg 3PT-Range leaguewide = 1.054 PPS, Josh = 0.774 PPS
Basically, whenever Josh shoots a jumper, the other teams defense has won that possession.

Fail.
