Mavs/Wizards Talks Heating Up

Marc Stein reporting for ESPN:

Sources told ESPN.com that the teams' negotiations only turned more serious Friday on a deal that would send Josh Howard, Drew Gooden and some smaller cap-friendly contracts to Washington for Butler, Haywood and Stevenson.

Seemingly every Dallas rumor for the last few years that has become this serious, and been reported by Stein, has wound up happening, so stay tuned...

Much more later.

that trade = win. (haywood is the prize, not butler)

Washington gets under the tax (+4.5 $mil check) → money win/rebuild. but no talent to build in exchange. ‘headscratch’ & no-no for wiz fans.

pure moneydecision?

I agree

But hey, don’t you think there’s a chance that Gooden is waived so the Mavs can sign him again after 30 days? That would be the cherry on top of this deal. Or they can get a big for the Trade Exception or from the D-League.

Anyway, this is the kind of deal I’ve been waiting for Cuban to do for months.

by mg4tx on Feb 12, 2010 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

This would very nice

Also Bucher reported that the Mavs walked away from Butler/Stevenson because they thought they had a deal for Kevin Martin before things fell apart.

We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.

by sprite on Feb 12, 2010 5:04 PM CST reply actions

Absolutely

Specially since Damp’s contract is not involved, and Butler’s and Haywood’s are not cap-killing contracts by any means. The Mavs’ financial situation would be unchanged.

Sweet
Mavericks appear to have agreed on the major points of a trade that will send Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton to Washington for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson.

The deal is not done. But a source said that the pieces of the trade have been tentatively agreed upon.

i like butler, and i like haywood. i think this deal is better than any philly deal we would've made because of the flexibility with caron's contract. i really hope this move works out, and i think it has a good chance to be just what we need.

he is the second scorer that we need, and i think when he is on the court with dirk and terry at the end of games, it’s going to make for an interesting time. haywood was a necessity of the deal cause of damp, but he’s always been somewhat under-appreciated center in the league. onward and upward.

The best thing about it is

it doesn’t effect your 2010 plans. It would actually increase your odds of getting a big name here, Butler/Damp would be a lot more enticing to teams than Howard/Damp. Actually, Haywood is probably the best thing about this deal, but yeah..

We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.

The only true loss is Gooden (assuming no boomerang, which is probable) but we get a solid starting center

Soulja Boy is slightly overpaid, but is a serviceable defender. And we all agree that Caron >>> Howard.

by mg4tx on Feb 12, 2010 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

Make that grossly overpaid

Apparently, his departure is the only possitive from this trade according to the guys at BF. Mavs taking on his contract is probably the reason why the Wizards are not demanding prospects.

As a Wizards fan

can we make anything out of Josh Howard come draft time….he has a team option…so maybe that’s good for my Wiz?

by DaGribb on Feb 12, 2010 7:04 PM CST reply actions

Depends on many things

What kind of assets you have to assemble an attractive package with him, what your main needs and objectives are, how much other teams need to cut costs and Wizards’ own financial situation.

by mg4tx on Feb 12, 2010 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe a contender's first round pick?

LA will probably opt to pass rather than draft a rookie anyhow.

by bbob on Feb 12, 2010 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

Why would the Lakers take Howard?

Ignoring the fact they traded their pick to Memphis in the Gasol trade, why do the Lakers want a forward that’s inferior to practically their entire rotation of forwards and usually is too injured to be effective?

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

WOW this would really put the Mavs right into contention.

Caron is a Howard upgrade and Brendan can change most any playoff team. defensively.

And if we bring Oberto for the TPE

That means more Mavericks coverage from Argentina. They control ESPN and Fox Sports in Latin America, which includes some little piece of land called Uruguay!

I hear Critteon is coming for the TPE because they don't have a roster spot.

by mg4tx on Feb 12, 2010 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

we will have this deal ...

that will be exciting … when josh was a good player, 2 or 3 years ago i already wanted us to trade him for butler … doing so now, would be fantastic … and haywood can help us … i hope cuban ads some money to the deal so the wizs waive gooden and we get him back

by hugommorais on Feb 12, 2010 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah ESPN's Marc Stein insists Haywood is still in it

Besides Butler arguably in a better shape than J-Ho and the Mavs finally landing a second center that could push Damp to the bench, I like about the deal that it also takes almost no trade options for the summer away. They could still do a S&T with Haywood, or package Dampier with someone if a real all-star becomes available for mostly expiring contracts.

by Norsktroll on Feb 12, 2010 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

The flexibility is probably the best thing of it ...

If nothing works this year, and doing this deal we have a better chance of competing this season, we can still improve on the next season. Butler is a lot better option to package with damp and even maybe haywood on the off season

That he will probably win the MVP of the all star game scoring 60 points

by hugommorais on Feb 12, 2010 11:23 PM CST reply actions

That’s awesome. Injuries are somewhat of a concern with him, he has never played 82 games and is averaging just 67 over his career so far. But his contract is fair for a player like that, and he’s not older than Howard who also has injury issues.

by Norsktroll on Feb 12, 2010 11:58 PM CST up reply actions

From a Wizards perspective...

I am glad to see that someone is benefiting from our pain and suffering . This has been a hellish season but hey… I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing Dirk have some success. =(

I heard somewhere that Stevenson

may be flipped to Milwaukee for Warrick, which would be another great move.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

What does DeShawn do for you?

He can’t shoot anymore.

Warrick gets you a backup at SF and PF with athleticism and at least some scoring ability.

by Zach Frady on Feb 13, 2010 9:38 AM CST reply actions

Because Kidd would love coming off the bench. Nah, Roddy’s not ready to start just yet. I would like him being used more actively as a 6th man.

This deal would be perfect if we could somehow get rid of Barea, then Roddy would get the minutes he deserves. Hope !yahoo isn’t reliable, haywood is a maybe according to them.

by Why on Feb 13, 2010 12:08 PM CST reply actions

I don’t hate JJ, he presents his own style, but it isn’t something consistent that will be effective against many teams. When we have someone better at the same position who just needs playing time to grow, then we should be developing him, instead of relying on someone who doesn’t have a very high ceiling.

by Why on Feb 13, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

but it's better to have him than not

so stop wishing him gone.

"Hang-Dai, Wu...Hang-Fu$&ing-Dai"

by Walter Sobchak on Feb 13, 2010 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

Nah, it’s not. How is it better to have him?

He’s a streaky shooter at best. Some games, he gets praised because he makes a few wide-open threes, the next 4 games he’ll be crap and be on a slump.

He’s way too much of a defensive liability, especially when playoff time comes. He can take charges, but otherwise he gets bullied.

Yes, he attacks the rim, but how effective is he? The athletic big men in this league have an answer for him everytime now. Now all of his lay-ups are either blocked or highly contested and he misses. Just like last season, he was great against the Spurs because he was usually attacking an immobile Tim Duncan. Then, when Denver came around he was a non-factor. He’s probably not even a factor against the Spurs with Blair.

I rather have Roddy used in the rotation when he’s much more effective. Doesn’t matter if I start a new comment.

by Why on Feb 13, 2010 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

hah.

well you’re just wrong. Barea is very useful, and it’s nice to have him available as an OPTION off the bench, not a starter…

"Hang-Dai, Wu...Hang-Fu$&ing-Dai"

by Walter Sobchak on Feb 13, 2010 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

You’re basically saying it’s nice to have a below mediocre player on your bench just in case he comes useful. There’s a reason why there aren’t 12 player rotations on championship teams. You use role players on your bench who will be effective. Barea is not close to being consistently effective, he just wastes minutes. He won’t be back in a Mavs jersey next season at least.
