I really like about the deal that it also takes away almost no trade options for the summer

Dampier is still an attractive unguaranteed contract, and Haywood could be used in a S&T if needed, and they could add Terry or Butler if it nets them a major major player. Butler is averaging just 67 games in his career and has never played 82 so there is some injury concern, but not really worse than with Josh’s ankle. And as a bonus he has the most experience playing LeBron. This deal has next to no downside.

P.S.: Reportedly Cuban also gets a little money from the Wizards in the deal. And there are rumors he is already working on flipping over Stevenson.

Equal To or Better than LA? No, but...

I don’t think this makes them better than LA right now but I think it makes them the second best team in the West. Now, once you get to the playoffs anything can happen, a player turns an ankle and can’t go, someone gets breaks a foot, etc. So, what this does is puts them in a position to beat the Lakers and that’s all you can ask for.

I LIke This Move

a lot, although it’s sad to see Drew Gooden go. I really grew to like him. Nevertheless, you can never have too many quality big men. Dampier, Haywood and Marion are all solid bigs. Now the Mavs need to pull their heads out of their rear ends and play requisite to their talent level. I’m just glad we didn’t have to give Beaubois.

Problem with Gooden is that he is too small to play center on defense, and that’s where he was needed the most. The Mavs had terrible +/- and defensive ratings with him in the lineup.

Gooden could return to the Mavs

if he accepts a buyout of his contract though he will have to wait 30 days.

by inquisitiveman on Feb 13, 2010 7:03 PM CST reply actions

I think there would be a buyout...

but the 30 days goes past March 1st, so Gooden couldn’t be used for the playoffs.

Thanks pookey, to get under the tax

maybe gooden takes the pay cut that he gets w/ a vet. deal with DAL. that could be the final cash to lower the Wiz to under the tax.

They better hope it doesn't does Dampier

might not make it through the season and playoffs, so having Gooden as a backup to Haywood would be essential.

by inquisitiveman on Feb 13, 2010 7:17 PM CST reply actions

Everyone's man Hollinger says

that he liked the trade for both teams unless we (and the Wiz) make another one before the deadline. I guess we need a decent back-up PG who could play defense. I like JJ but, along with our beloved aging Kidd, these guys are turnstiles today on the defensive end.

by turnaroundfadeawaydunk on Feb 13, 2010 7:35 PM CST reply actions

Good move by the Mavs.

I wonder if there is any rumor that they will use their TPE to acquire Oberto from the Wiz to complete the deal. (Saves the Wiz more money this season basically.)

before the break considering how the Mavs struggled and of course that trashing in Denver.

Quietly confident now, but still want to see how they go after the break.

from a Wizards fan in WDC

hey Mavs fans… Im a big Wizards fan, season ticket holder. you should know that almost everyone in DC absolutely hates this trade.

you are getting Caron Butler, who is a great role model, hard worker, and former all star. He’s had a down season this year, but its been due to the new offense the Wiz have implemented…which really doesn’t play to his strengths. I think Kidd iwll be able to get him the ball in the right spots, and he’ll rever to all star form.

Brendon Haywood is the best kept secret in the NBA. He’s a double-double machine. He blocks shots. He has given Shaq, Dwight Howard, and KG fits here in the Eastern Conference…one of the few Centers who can check those guys one on one. He has the size and length to help you against Gasol and Bynum of the Lakers. You’ll love him.

by CVC on Feb 13, 2010 7:46 PM CST reply actions

Sad to hear that man.. but with all the fiasco going there in the Wiz locker room

because of Gil’s antics and the recent slump of both teams, your front office had to make this trade. Just don’t lose Antawn, though…

I’m speaking for myself here and not the entire Dallas Mavs fanbase, but I think Haywood is the most important guy we got in this trade.

by turnaroundfadeawaydunk on Feb 13, 2010 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

haywood

yep, haywood was the best thing the Wizards had going this year. He brought it every single night, grabbing offensive rebounds, blocking shots, and barking out orders on defense (even though he knew we had poor defenders in Arenas and Jamison). He’s got a great personality too. He’ll do a great job for the Mavs, give you the inside presence you need to contend with the Lakers and the Nuggets.

It’s a very, very, very sad day here in Washington losing Brendan Haywood, who came here as a rookie.

by CVC on Feb 13, 2010 8:05 PM CST up reply actions

Why shouldn't the Wiz not let Jamison go?

The guy is getting old with a huge contract with 2 yrs left. If anything, they should’ve found a way to trade him first as they’re cleaning house anyway.

by inquisitiveman on Feb 13, 2010 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

actually I was just saying that

because I hate to see a Jamison going to the Cavs! haha. To be honest, I think he’s the only vet in there which holds the team together.

Good Move

Cuban has once again proven why he’s a good owner: he has the ability and willingness to spend money. I agree with the sentiment that this doesn’t propel us into Lakers territory but it certainly gets us closer. 2 things stand out: 1) Haywood gives us some additional versatility. He’s just a TAD more athletic than Dampier and is a better all around player which means we can stick him out there and still play our preferred “small ball” style and run run run much more effectively 2) Can’t agree with Hollinger that Howard and Butler are essentially the same player. They’ve both had down years but Butler is tougher, has a higher ceiling and has a much better chance of returning to his all-star form. GO MAVS!

by Ross Dwyer on Feb 13, 2010 7:53 PM CST reply actions

why he’s a good owner: he has the ability and willingness to spend money.

The Wizards were over the luxury tax on an awful year. They, too, were willing to spend. Paul Allen had those couple of seasons before the Jailblazers period when he accrued all the high-price problematic veterans, Oakland Raiders style, and it fell apart.

It ain’t all checkbooks. Cuban is shrewd.

as long as he doesn’t have skillets hands like Dampier I’ll be thrilled.

w/r/t rebound rate

dampier is slightly better than haywood, but they’re both top 10 in that category. the issue is will carlisle use a traditional lineup or will nowitzki still play a lot of minutes at the five. at the very least, carlisle has the option to stay with a big lineup and match-up with taller frontlines.

butler is a fine all-around player. i think kidd will make him more productive.

2010-2011 Cap Situation

It looks like Cuban doesn’t mind losing more money next year. Barring anymore trades, it looks like Dallas already has about 68million committed to only 8 players next year.
Dirk, Butler, Kidd, Marion, Terry, Carroll, Stevenson, Roddy. Just to get to the league min of 13 will require signing 5 more players. Even if those are all scrubs and rookies your looking at 78 million. If you want to resign Haywood it’ll probably take at least the mid-level for 5.5 million so it seems like the roster could top 80million next year. With the salary cap going to to around 63million it looks like Dallas will be subsidizing a lot of other teams with luxury tax payments next year.

upgrade in every aspect

the 2 obvious is caron is the offensive boost and haywood gives them a real center but I’m intrigued with stevenson, he fell off the planet this year but if he brings the defensive intensity and knocking down open shots like a few years ago that would be huge having a reliable swingman off the bench. great trade, hey we didn’t have to give up roddy either.

by LGlyde on Feb 13, 2010 10:58 PM CST reply actions

Stevenson is a legendarily bad offensive player right now

Washington folks tell me consistently that Stevenson’s shot is broken since his injury. His PER right now is, let me just check…. Yes, it’s the lowest number in the league among anyone who’s played 250 or more minutes. But whaddaya know, the Wizards got back Quinton Ross, whose number is comparably awful. That’s…. really kind’ve bad.

I agree, though, on a winner he’d be able to play his role defensively, and that’s worth having around if you’ve got a spot for it.

How did Haywood and Gooden get into this deal??

The Wizards seem to have expanded the initial Caron-for-Howard core deal to include Brendan Haywood, a reasonably legitimate starting NBA center who cranks out double doubles, and what they got for widening the scope of the trade was a $3 million salary savings next year on the difference between DeShawn Stevenson and Quinton Ross. Otherwise Haywood and Drew Gooden are both expirings….. They even seem to have sent money Cuban’s way for the privilege.

Ouch. Does $3 million for one season seem to be equivalent to the value of an NBA center?

Dallas said no deal if Haywod wasn't included.

Dallas may have known the Wiz had no other trade partners, so the Wiz got desperate and said yes.

"Desperate" was the only word necessary

It’s painful. That one word alone would serve to characterize the Wizards front office right now.

You’d think they would have needed Haywood to sweeten whatever deal got Jamison’s contract out the door, but now they’ve still got those couple of years in hand too. Youch.

Jamison's also 34,

and has two more years after this one at $13.3 million and $15 million. If they’re seriously trying to rebuild, they ship him. Before this deadline, they ship him.

This may save the Mavs’ season (if the Mavs were headed for an uber-collapse in the first place).

you are going to love Haywood. I’m excited to see him play for an actual team, he’ll probably start to get the credit he deserves for his D. He is a great communicator on D, getting people in the right spots, and he plays great one-on-one defense.

And to think Howard was once considered the future of the Mavs after Nowitzki.

Miss Gooden’s scoring and his intensity he brought sometimes, but excited to see Haywood and Butler. Puts the Mavs definitely right behind the Lakers, we’ll have to wait to see how close the gap is.
