World Cup 2010 Thread

It's here. After waiting four long years and sitting around watching other, less popular sports (I'm looking at you Moose Climbing), La Copa Mundial has arrived. Let us delve into the tournament of football, the most popular sport on this planet we call, Earth.

The first match today will be the host nation South Africa vs Mexico at 9AM Central on ESPN.

A very anticipated showdown will take place on Saturday at 1:30PM Central time. The teams?

United States vs England.

Wowie wow wow! It's the American Revolution all over again. This time, it's personal.

Group A- South Africa/Mexico/Uruguay/France

Group B- Argentina/South Korea/Nigeria/Greece

Group C- United States/England/Algeria/Slovenia

Group D- Germany/Australia/Serbia/Ghana

Group E- Netherlands/Japan/Denmark/Cameroon

Group F- Italy/Paraguay/New Zealand/Slovakia

Group G- Brazil/North Korea/Ivory Coast/Portugal

Group H- Spain/Switzerland/Honduras/Chile

Times of matches and a link to a printable schedule. I have mine all ready to go.

Here is some very nice info and pictures on the cities and stadiums where games will take place. South Africa looks lovely this time of year.

Finally I will tell you which teams I'm rooting for and I hope you do the same as well. Let's get some competitive spirit going.

1. Mexico- Because I am Mexican.

2. United States- I was born here, it's my home!

3. Germany- Well you know obviously...

4. England- I visited merry old England two years ago, it's fanTAStic.

5. Spain- My grandpa told me we're of Spaniard descent.

6. Australia- I have a few friends down under, their women are pretty hot and I want to visit one day.

I LOVE the World Cup.

Mexico is going a great job of attacking.

Two scoring opportunities, neither succeeded.

by bruce182 on Jun 11, 2010 9:21 AM CDT reply actions

Read up on the rules bud, the keeper was off his line, there was only one guy on the line, so it didn’t matter. Vela was past the keeper, in an offsides position when he was played the ball. Great call.

by Why on Jun 12, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

2nd half.

Keep attacking! Score damn you

by bruce182 on Jun 11, 2010 10:09 AM CDT reply actions

I survived game 1.

South Africa 1-1 Mexico. Good job coming back Mexico. You need to work on some things though.

by bruce182 on Jun 11, 2010 10:57 AM CDT reply actions

Have them. World Cup is important so this is fine.

YOU need to either get into this or get off your high horse! Watch footie damn you.

It's all good man, nice effort.

I’m a big soccer fan too, but I don’t care about Mexico. Actually, this thread is awesome compared to those at iamthe12thman.com. It already has three commenters! Beergut is famous for his many lonely threads over there.

by horns129 on Jun 11, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Ha, I've read a lonely thread over there, it is sad.

Buckets will probably drop by and deliver a few nuggets. Stop by whenever, we can yell at the tv.

Oh Bruce

some of us work during the day and can’t sit through entire games… :)

Korea up 2-0 on Greece.

R.I.P. Mitsos. I might be absent today for USA v ENGLAND, I’ll be drinking it up and whatnot. GO BOTH TEAMS!

by bruce182 on Jun 12, 2010 8:34 AM CDT reply actions

shame...

I’ll probably be watching that one.

by LJRotter on Jun 12, 2010 8:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Greece was absolutely awful, I’d fire their coach among picking new players.

by Why on Jun 12, 2010 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

The Japanese are playing rough, yo.

I forgot I made this thread, crazy weekend. I’ll post all the leaders later and who’s what, where and when for why and how. Talkin’ it up, on MavsMoneyball.

Not really on topic but...

Goes the blonde chick with glasses in the germany pic look like Hayden Panittiere(Sorry for bad spelling) to anyone else? I just checked this post for the first time, as i was scrolling its the first thought that popped in my mind..

On a brighter note, the WC has started off great the first few days. I hope England can bounce back and win some games! Show them your stuff Wayne!

Uruguay Uruguay!!

How about that ass-kicking? First time I see my country get a win in a WC. Absolutely brilliant performance. Those guys Forlán and Suárez can play, eh? Also, how can Parreira blame the ref when Luisito Suárez almost got killed out there and Fucile was injured by a southafrican with a criminal tackle and had to be taken out of the game? Actually, the ref was trying to make it close in the 2nd half. And the PK was the right call. Man are dirty those Bafana Bafana.
By the way, I guess we will hear a lot less vuvuzelas now that SA is done. You’re welcome, world.

We need every goal, man

It’s a tight group, goal average can decide everything. You don’t want to be 2nd and face Argentina, do you? I know I don’t. Though it’d be pretty sweet, taking those obnoxious assholes out. Yeah, I hate argentinian soccer.

by mg4tx on Jun 17, 2010 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't like the draw

If Mexico beats us and France beats SA, we’re out.

Anelka sucks

He was offside so Ribery was forced to keep the ball and got trapped, then the ref bailed him out then Anelka couldn’t get the FK past the wall. He sucked against Uruguay as well. I thought he was going to kill us. Put Henry in, dammit! I don’t want a pumped up Mexico in the last game!

by mg4tx on Jun 17, 2010 2:20 PM CDT reply actions

Yo, I'm here.

Mexico was getting some bunk ass calls, that ref is teh gay.

France 1 point 2 GP 0 W 1 D 1 L -1 GA

Uruguay 4 points +3
México 4 points +2
France 1 point -2
South Africa 1 point -3

México-Uruguay will be one hell of a game. They’ll play to avoid El Gordo Droga and company.

Germany lost 0-1 :(

and now USA is down a goal. Tim Howard just froze on a strong kick by (slovenian player). If the US goes down like Germany then England needs to win.

GOOOOOOOOOOOL!!! Bradley! The ref took away a 3rd goooool!

I call Gerrard for the first goal, that’s my boy!

by bruce182 on Jun 18, 2010 1:38 PM CDT reply actions

USA won't get past Uruguay

IF they get past Ghana, which I think they will. Uruguay is the best team in the competition by far (I must confess I thought we weren’t going to get past the first round, thanks France). Lockdown defense and two monster scorers. And El Ruso and Egidio! Donovan would get his ass handed to him if he faced those two.

Also, México, please beat Argentina. Pretty please, with sugar on top.

by mg4tx on Jun 23, 2010 9:35 PM CDT reply actions

You have to be kidding, that’s like me predicting the US will win the world cup because of their heart and determination! Get out of fairy land. Uruguay is a mediocre team in this tournament, probably a little better.

I’d put my house on the line if Brazil plays Uruguay. Lockdown defense? Uruguay had the weakest group pretty much. France is god-awful(And they should have beat you, they just didn’t finish), Mexico is young and almost as good as Uruguay, and South Africa is terrible obviously.

Best team! What a joke, I’d say they’re in the middle of the pack.

by Why on Jun 23, 2010 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I never said we will win it. Actually I think we don’t have a chance. We are the best team SO FAR, because the favourites haven’t come to play yet. They will evetually. Or not. Argentina’s been good, but they got the easiest group. Same with Brasil. We struggled to qualify so I didn’t like our chances before the WC started. But we got there, and we made it look easy. We kicked ass, that’s why you think it was easy. For us, it was. It really was a surprise for everyone here. We didn’t allow one single goal. We made the overhyped Mexico look average, we silenced the vuvuzelas. We have heart and determination, we’ve always had that. But now we also have the team NOBODY wants to play. I hope the US and A makes it past Ghana so you can see what a real team looks like.
