Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The burning question: Is a monkey in a diaper better than Rick Carlisle?

This is the one thing I've seen little or no mention of so far in this off season: do we need a new coach? I'm sorry if this offends you but I personally think that Rick Carlisle is not qualified to coach an NBA team or anything beyond high-school b-ball to be honest. He could only come up with one lineup change vs. the Spurs and he ran it way too much. Small ball is fine and dandy but you don't do it all the time, period. Haywood played an inexcusably low amount of minutes and Caron Butler was grossly underused as well. It was harder to see during the regular season but after watching him in a series against one of the best coaches in the league (Greg Popovich) his weakness became far more apparent. A man who is more dumbfounded by the "questionable" foul call on your team than the player who it was called against is hardly a man you can expect to rally and/or focus a team that needs to be reigned in and directed when the chips are down. He's never shown me anything that indicates he's good enough to run our team and Jason Kidd, even being the great floor general that he can be, shouldn't be our one and only "authority figure" or team leader.

Feel free to leave your feedbac, call me an idiot or make cheap joke about coach Carlisle, it's all welcomed and appreciated!

Rick certainly has made his mistakes..

I’ll name a few

Playing the names over the moment. Meaning, he would take out Roddy, or Barea, or even Terry when they were hot to put in players that have bigger names, but weren’t necessarily having a good game. He especially did it with Josh Howard, taking out hot players to get him in there, and lose us the game. He was the WORST about this in the 4th quarter in the playoff series. He would take out the successful lineup and put in the starters in late close situations…

Not making adjustments. When opposing teams go small(for example) you don’t want to fully change your lineup. That will kill your players confidence. But you also cant stay the complete same if your team isn’t having a good game. I remember games where both teams are playing poorly, but us a little less badly. So we had a 5ish point lead. Theo the other coach adjusts by putting in an extra guard and a small forward and rick does nothing. It wouldnt kill to maybe switch 1 guy out to adjust when the other team subs in 3 different players. The other team drops a total of 1 foot in size, adding a lot of speed, so it wouldnt kill for us to sub just 1 guy in or out to maybe go 3 or 4 inches shorter and be faster. Nothing huge!

Over or underplaying our superstars. When a few guys get going in late 3rd quarters, ride their streak! Don’t keep Dirk and Terry in there(guys who can create their own offense) rather put in a solid defender and let the already hot other guys keep scoring while you play better defense too! Instead we keep our superstars in, they get tired, and hey! we develop a 7 point lead, but next thing you know its early 4th quarter and Dirk, Kidd, and Butler have all played 10 of the last 13 minutes and are exhausted! Also, when they get in foul trouble, its not the end of the world. If we NEED him(or any player) in a situation, they have the responsibility to not foul. Watch a guy liek Phil Jackson. If Kobe has 4 fouls with 5 mins to go in the 3rd, or 5 fouls with 5 to go in the 4th, he keeps him in. Just like you should keep Dirk in. Dirk’s smart. if we dont need him take him out, but if we do, keep him in ffs!

There are more but ill stop. I won’t say whether i think we need a new coach or not. He’s not terrible. Ill say that. Not at all a terrible coach, just maybe not the right one for us. Maybe he is though. I obviously acknowledge his mistakes, but if we fire coaches constantly after 1 or 2 bad results we can never hit a groove. Its not good to keep trading out players or coaches. Id liek a new one but there isnt much better out there. At least none so much better its worth losing the chemistry he might have

I Hate Carlyle

He was outclassed by Greg Popovich in the first round, and the Mavs are a continued laughingstock of the NBA. We were the 2nd G/D seed in the west, and we were sent home in 5 games. Pathetic.
The best illustration of his incompetence is how he played (or didn’t play) Roddy Beaubois in game 5. Roddy got us back in the game and he sits him the whole 4th quarter. Cuban should have fired him after the game.

Greetings from the Humungus, the Ruler of the Wasteland, the Ayatollah of Rock and Roll-A. I laugh at your puny plans.

I don't know if the diaper is necessary for the monkey to be better than Carlisle

The man has been an absolute embarrassment. He’s not only turned an incredibly talented team into a round-one loser, but he’s managed to hamper the development of our younger players at the same time. Good job, coach.
