Maybe a dumb question regarding Dirk and Al Jefferson
If we trade for Al Jefferson, could we possibly have Dirk play the three? I'm not the most knowledgeable basketball fan, but a lot of his skills would seem to translate well.

I think the Mavs would only be able to get away with it in short bursts
and the matchup at the 3 would have to be a taller type 3 whose quickness wouldn’t be so great as to guarantee that our defense would fall apart. Regardless, I don’t think that would be something you would see if Dallas acquired Jefferson since even the Lakers bring Odom off the bench rather than playing all three of their big men at once.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
In the long run,
no because that would be an absolute nightmare defensively. Sure we’d be pretty much unstoppable on the offensive end, but that’s not what wins championships!
Definitely not a stupid question, but it probably wouldn't work
Dirk really wouldn’t fit at the 3. A 3 needs to be able to not only drive with the ball (which Dirk is okay at, but usually only after a shot fake) but he must also move well without the ball (which is not Dirk’s game at all). Remember all of the great cuts that Josh Howard made in his heyday and then imagine Dirk trying to do the same thing. Having him, Jefferson, and Hayward on the floor at the same time would also create a serious defensive problem, since one of them would have to cover a SF, and none of them can come close to doing so. Jefferson could be a fit for this team, but he would have to come off the bench. I’m thinking he would get 20-22 minutes behind Haywood, and another 12 behind Dirk.

I can’t imagine Dirk guarding a guy like Carmelo Anthony at all.
Before you ask why I'm a fan of both the Cowboys and Jets, I'll just say the answer is complicated and that it just turned out that way.
I could and it would be pretty funny looking.
