My Notes from Summer League, Game 2

So during our two preseason summer league games so far, I thought I'd take notes of what I thought about the game as a whole. So what I did was skimmed through all the notes and copy pasted everything I wrote about the 5 players that are getting attention this summer league (Roddy, Jones, Samhan, Lin and Foster). Everything here was written as the game was taking place, and though some of it is just play by play, I also tried to give opinions throughout.

Rodrigue Beaubois: 28 Pts, 12/20 FG, 2/6 3PT, 2/3 FTs, 4 boards, 4 dimes, 4 TO

Roddy looked bad there on his drop down help d to the post. He came down, but wasn't able to go after the ball, so just kind of stood there as Hill made his move.

Good job by Roddy, twice in a row, by just flicking the ball to the rolling big for a wide open look. Gets rewarded by a Samhan trey. And then Roddy, on the fast break, with another circus shot...you'll see that one in the highlights.

Roddy finally hits something. However, three perimeter players, including Jones and Roddy, missed a wide open Samhan under the basket. Perhaps he was not as open as I thought, but he appeared to be totally unguarded.

Roddy just got caught up on the screen, again. No harm done though.

Roddy blows by a defender...well, more like gets a step...but misses the finger roll high off the glass. Roddy then drains a three, with his classic pretend to drive past a pick, but really kind of hesitate to see if they'll get stuck behind it. Well, they did, and he made 'em pay.

Roddy with exceptional speed there. A missed free throw off the front rim that got deflected away, and even though one Houston player is closer, Roddy sprints, grabs the ball, bursts downcourt flicks off no look to Jones. He pump fakes ones, then goes up and draws the foul. Then, Roddy gets an open look outside the 3 point line, but decides to pump fake and drive, getting a relatively easy layup. I'd say that's progress. And here we go again: Roddy drives, but pulls up at the free throw line and gets the roll off the front rim. He's looking really nice today. Really nice to see a mid range game, which he's going to need to utilize in the NBA.

Roddy comes off the screens, sees just a tiny bit of daylight at the high school 3 point line, and swishes the shot.

Oh, Roddy with a nice split of the pick and roll, but throws it away. According to the commentators, though, Giddens should have been filling in down there in the corner where Roddy threw it.

Roddy with a nice, hard, quick drive on the fast break, just laying it up and over the defender off glass.

Roddy went to the pull up again, just barely missing off the front iron. He looked confident about it, though. Then an and-1...nice touch while taking contact.

<!-- / message --> <!-- sig -->Nice and-1 by Roddy. His body control, hanging in the air while adjusting to get the shot off, was quite impressive.

Roddy and Lin just botched a simple hand off. That's a bad turnover.

Roddy? How about another and one. Picks up the ball, brings it over his head to split the double, then gets a nice scoop shot off the glass to go. He's looking as lethal as he should be looking.

Roddy just blew by everybody for the layup in the fast break. Did anyone ever mention he's fast? And then he did it again, this time in the half court. Game's pretty much over, though, with mere seconds left in the 4th and Houston leading by 8.

Star-divide

Dominique Jones: 10 Pts, 2/6 FG, 6/10 FT, 4 boards, 3 asts, 2 TO

Dominique Jones went past a pick, and drains an open free throw line jumper. He has to be able to do that consistently.

Three perimeter players, including Jones and Roddy, missed a wide open Samhan under the basket. Perhaps he was not as open as I thought, but he appeared to be totally unguarded.

Dojo's 3 ball was very long. Heck, I thought he was going to bank it in.

Dominique twice tried to drive by simply lowering his head with no results. Guess that's not going to work so well up here in the NBA.

Jones tried to kick the ball out off a drive but it got deflected. He should have made that pass.

D-Jones? Splits a double and bowls over Hill, who came too late to draw the charge. Two more from the line.

Jones with a nice pull up jumper that created a lot of space from 8 feet but missed off the back rim.

Dojo with a sleek drive, just gliding down the lane and gets the roll.

Dojo picks the ball up without a target in mind and gets trapped by two players. Lucky to not turn it over, as the ball was deflected as he tried to throw it back.

Jones tries to split the double, but gets stripped.

Jeremy Lin: 4 Pts, 1/2 FG, 2/3 FT, 3 Reb, 1 asts, 2 TO

Lin is in. I'm going to be watching him closely, as should we all.

Lin, on the pick and roll, made a good decision to reach around the defense and try to get the ball to his big man, but he passed it too long and it was at his feet resulting in a turnover. He needs to execute that pass.

Lin, again, with great defense. It was intended to be a handoff from the big to the guard, but Lin got in there and disrupted without fouling, even though it did not result in a steal.

Lin with a nice wrap around. He didn't really get the step he needed on his man to put up a shot, but was able to get the ball to Watkins under the basket who bobbled the pass. Still, we saw that wrap around pass two or three times yesterday.

Lin with an and-1. Samhan kicked to him, he was able to get the step on the oncoming defender, and banked it off the glass. He then makes an underhanded flip pass to Giddens on the fast break, who missed, but was followed up by Samhan. It wasn't a fancy pass, but it should have been an assist and a score.

Lin drives and kicks to Foster, who rims out the corner trey. And the next trip down the court, he's able to get into the lane again. Then went to the floor after a loose ball, gets a jump ball. He plays hard, and he drives hard. He plays smart, though, he doesn't have a bowling ball approach. He's got a real shot at a roster spot, I think, if he keeps this up. If not, the Mavericks will at least be interested in getting him to play with their new D league team.

Roddy and Lin just botched a simple hand off. That's a bad turnover.

#35 just airballed a three, but Lin comes flying in and throws the ball off the Houston guy, resulting in the Mavs getting the ball back.

Shan Foster: 2 Pts, 1/4 FG, 0/2 3PT, 1 asts, 1 stl, 1 TO

Foster just airballed a jumper, short and wide. He tried to pull up from 20 feet, but the defender came flying in and made him adjust his shot. Whenever you have to adjust how you shoot a 20 foot shot, bad things happen.

Foster makes a nice hard drive (looked like it was Jones at first) and finished with a reverse layup.

Shan Foster misses a three. For a guy whose supposed to be a shooter, it was a good look.

Lin drives and kicks to Foster, who rims out the corner trey.

Omar Samhan: 17 Pts, 8/12 FG, 6 boards, 3 steals, 2 TO

Samhan with a nice turnaround jumper, although I'd almost rather him just go up with it with a half hook. He had really deep position and the turnaround just takes him further away from the basket, nullifying the advantage of getting so deep. Samhan then strikes again, this time with a nice tear drop.

Good job by Roddy, twice in a row, by just flicking the ball to the rolling big for a wide open look. Gets rewarded by a Samhan high school trey.

Samhan again decided to give up good post position, and instead tries to turn and shoot a turnaround jumper which misses badly. However, he proceeds to drain another three pointer (once again a high school one, so in the NBA its just a 19 foot jumper).

Lin with an and-1. Samhan kicked to him from the post, he was able to get the step on the oncoming defender, and banked it off the glass. He then makes an underhanded flip pass to Giddens on the fast break, who missed, but was followed up by Samhan.

Offensive foul, Samhan. He has seemed to commit a ton of fouls so far this summer league. I know he has 5 fouls in the 1st quarter last game (though he didn't commit any the rest of the game)

Samhan, mistaking himself for Roddy, tries to pump fake and drive but travels in the process.

Once again, Samhan gets the ball rolling to the bucket, but he decides to turn and fade away, missing the shot, rather than going up strong like I think he should have.

Good job by Samhan saving a rebound back in bounds. And then, somehow catches a pass from Roddy through two players and gets a wide open layup because of it.

Jason Terry: No statline

JET's being interviewed. He admits that "the Mavericks are one or two moves away from being a legit contender." He also says that they need a post presence. For a usually optimistic guy, that's not sugar coating it at all. Of course, he also says Roddy reminds him of himself. He says that they "are still gunning for" the Heat because of what happened in the Finals.

Great piece man

I dont know about you people. But we need a post on Al Jefferson. I was so excited about getting him. Now the Jazz seem to have traded for him. We better make a hell of a deal, losing Jefferson is big!

So Foster seems to be looking like a wasted pick. Hope he enjoys Europe!
