My Notes from Summer League, Game 3

Once again, same drill. I took notes as I was watching, and here they are, unedited. Not a recap, mainly a running commentary while the game was going on. I tried to focus on opinions, and stuff that you can't just find my reading recaps and play by plays. If someone badly misses a shot, if a pass is almost thrown away, if he could have got an and-1 if he did this...that's what I tried to write down.

Now, I missed portions of this game. I saw a lot of it, but I missed the entire 3rd quarter. I'm posting what I have anyway, but if there was something you were looking for and its not here, that may be why.

Great win, glad we aren't going to lose them all.

By the way, just a quick note for people planning on watching the next to Mavs summer league games (Thu and Sun at 7 Central time), they are both freely broadcasted on ESPN 3. Good to know. I watched our first game on ESPN 3 and it was great quality, hardly any lag at all. Very impressed. Much better than ATDHE.

Rodrigue Beaubois: 15 points, 6/14 FG, 3/5 3PT, 0/2 FT, 7 assists, 8 fouls, 1 steal, 6 turnovers

Good job by Roddy there, running the pick and pop well. He drives past the screen, then sent the ball back to Mohammed Faye for a high school trey.

Jones to Roddy, who is cutting along the free throw line. He doesn't have a lane, but makes a nice side "shove" pass to Giddens, who nails the shot.

Roddy with a nice downcourt pass on the money to Samhan, who leaked out after a rebound for a easy layup.

Yeah, Roddy bumped knees, twisted an ankle and face planted into the ground. He's a man, though, he's still out there.

Roddy definately has the "his team" mindset right now. He's come up shooting the past four times he's found a little room, knocking down two jumpers. That's good, because this should be his team. I mean, if its not his, whose is it? Mohammed Faye? How about no.

Roddy, again, jacking it up there the first chance he gets. I'd rather see him drive it a little. Its not the "my team" mentality, its the "my team so I can take heat checks like LeBron" that needs to change a little. His strength is his ability to drive even more than his jumper, so why is he going away from his strength?

That's a very nice job by Roddy. There was a defender closing on him, and so he pump faked once to keep the defender on his feet. Then he rises for the jumper, when his defender is flat footed and unable to contest, and gets an open look, nailing it.

That's EXACTLY what we want to see from Roddy. A pullup mid range jumper. Great shot! The mid range will be important for Roddy to develop, and right there, that's exactly what we've been wanting. Clutch, too.

Star-divide

Dominique Jones: 9 points, 3/12 FG, 0/0 3PT, 2/4 FT, 4 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers, 2 blocks

Jones looked confident trying the mid range, with a baseline stepback, but it missed pretty bad, short and wide off the front rim. That right there is what he's going to need to be able to do. People who can only drive don't typically do so well in the NBA.

Jones had room for a mid range, but hesitated, and instead tried to step through a double and bank it in. Couldn't hit the layup, and it makes you nervous when he doesn't trust himself to rise up and knock down a 10-12 foot jumper.

Jones looked confident there, with a fadeaway stepback on the wing off the dribble. Rimmed it out. I liked the attempt though, just has to hit it next time.

Dominique was able to drive and easily got under the basket. Wrapped around to Faye, who got fouled. Then, he drives and kicks to the corner to Giddens. Next play, he drives, stops in the lane, and shoots a turn around jumper. Had good arc but missed. I like the shots he's taking but he's eventually going to have to hit them.

Oh, wow. Jones's pullup after the whistle was way, way long. No rim. His jumper really is mediocre.

DJones came flying in to swat away the 3/4 quarter court shot away, by the way, at the end of the game.

JR Giddens: 16 points, 7/11 FG, 2/3 3PT, 4 boards, 1 assists, 1 steals, 1 blocks

Jones to Roddy, who is cutting along the free throw line. He doesn't have a lane, but makes a nice side "shove" pass to Giddens, who nails the shot.

Oh, boy, wow! Giddens just hammered one thanks to a beautiful lob pass from Roddy on a drive. Nice play from both players.

Haha, Giddens got the alley oop lay-in to tie the game! Wow. That's awesome. Beautiful touch on that shot. Not a bad pass by Roddy either.

Its the JR Giddens show! Nice job, pump faking and stepping in and draining a long 2.

Jeremy Lin: 8 points, 2/5 FG, 1/2 3PT, 3/3 FT, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers

A nice tip rebound by Lin to Josh Mayo.

Lin steals, goes the distance, and puts in a Roddy-esque layup and one. The steal was very impressive. He just swatted it out of the hand of the Buck player. That was beautiful.

Another steal by Lin. He came down, very quickly, and just tapped it out of the hands of the post player. Hit the floor, too, to make sure he got it. Very impressive.

Everyone Else

Faye just rimmed out a 26 foot jumper. His stroke looks nice. That surprises me...didn't realize he could do that.

Foster almost threw a simple chest pass into the stands.

Tiny Gallon just lowered his shoulder and shoved Seck aside. Definately needs to bulk up.

Omar Samhan misses a foul line jumper, but he shot it without any hesitation. He trusts his shot.

Nice pump fake and jump stop by Samhan to get open under the basket. Roddy almost traveled on that play, because he lost the handle on the ball but he gathered it up and threw it out to the top of the key. Quick reflexes, though ideally he doesn't lose control in the first place.

Faye just pinned a shot at the top of the shot box on the back board. Very pretty. I remember his first game he didn't really stand out to me. He's stood out to me a lot more the past two games. He's been agressive, for sure. I'm not saying he's going to make the Mavericks, but maybe a D League candidate. <!-- / message --> <!-- sig -->
