Rudy Fernandez
Portland wants to trade him,and the Mavs should get him. He's one of the best three point shooters in the NBA. The Mavs could really use Rudy Fernandez, and his ability to hit the three pointers late in the game. Since the Mavs really struggled with the three pointers late in the game, and this is why they were ousted by San Antonio in the first round. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

We need him
But the process of getting him and then getting him playing time will be complicated. We would almost certainly have to ship JET out somewhere, and I don’t know how likely that is to happen.

We need to find away.
Others team don’t respect the Mavs three point shooting, and that’s how the Spurs beat us in the playoffs by double teaming Dirk and making everybody else pay the price.
I hate to break it to you...
but I don’t think that even if we had the likes of Ray Allen and Kyle Korver on the wings people would stop doubling Dirk. I don’t think there’s any amount of potent three point shooting that could change it. Not doubling him is certain death and I think everyone in the league knows this. Hell, Dirk still beats the double team from time to time…

But what does Jose Juan Barea do for us?
I’d rather Rudy any day.
Wellnot that much yet...
But I think you have to consider him a work in progress. If Kidd can teach him a little more and he gets some experience he could be a hellacious point guard. I just don’t think you ship off a guy with that much untested potential unless you really have to.

It's not a matter of stopping people from doubling Dirk.
That’s always going to happen. But you need someone to make those shots that come from the double-teams, otherwise the team’s offensive efficiency is down across the board.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Yup
We really need shooters on this team. Part of me was hoping we could have gotten either Korver or Reddick, but the money they got was probably too much. Hopefully, someone like DoJo can start to pick up the load.

Yeah now we're getting somewhere.
Rudy Fernandez is a logical choice. He’s a three point specialist, he can help in the running game and he’s a decent defender. Having depth at three point shooting will help our half court game as well.

I don't think Portland really wants him.
They already have Jerryd Bayless to take over from Andre Miller, and even Patrick Mills is better than JJ.

ok
Dallas gets: Ken Kesey’s corpse
Portland gets: Cormac McCarthy
Actually, I take that back. Can’t trade Cormac. The man’s a national treasure.
As for Rudy, don’t see why or how it’d happen. Blazers are a savvy organization, they won’t trade him simply to do so. He’s very cheap, talented, and a crowd favorite. If they really wanted him just gone, they could simply buy him out and let him go back to Spain, which seems like something he’d prefer over a small bench role in the NBA.

I don't agree,.......
Portland wants him. I think they’d trade him. He’s just too valuable to the team right now.

Given the right compensation.
I think a trade could be reached. I’m not too keen on your comment he prefer Spain over the NBA. I also believe he’d be a good fit for the Mavs, who’s in desperate need of a legitimate outside threat.
If Mark wasn’t so preoccupied with a certain auction right now. Maybe we could get a top FA like Rudy to maybe consider joining the Mavs.

re:

I think it could be, too…I just don’t think Dallas is a very likely destination for him to come via trade.

That’s not exactly what I said. I said it seemed like he prefers the idea of going back to Spain, where he’s a star and a national celebrity and will accordingly be given star minutes, to having a small role on the bench in the NBA. This has been widely rumored for a while now, even going back to reported tension stemming from last year. He has clashed with McMillan at times in his brief career, and given the Blazer roster, he doesn’t have much of a chance of carving out more than 25-28 minutes a night, and even that might be optimistic, considering he lost playing team this past season. I couldn’t say I blamed him if he went back to Europe. He’s a big fish there.

Well, there’s the rub. Fernandez isn’t a free agent, and won’t be until 2012 at the earliest(unless his contract is bought out, which I’m betting would be done with the understanding he would go back to Europe).
Also, while I like Rudy, how much time would he really be able to get on the current Mavs roster? I don’t think you can assume he’d win a starting job, given his defensive limitations, and the fact that he doesn’t really create for himself. He’d be looking at about 25 minutes a night here, just as in Portland.
My premise is he brings a need the Mavs have to fill.
I understand your apprehentions. Whether FA or just plain available for a trade Rudy would cover a need I see the Mavs have to address very soon. I just think the Mavs are not helping the themselves by not going after players who covers obvious weaknesses.

I don’t think there’s anything that’s been printed suggesting the Mavericks don’t have interest in him.
But it’s hard to keep a phone conversation going when you don’t have the right pieces to barter with.
OKay,.........

That's what worries me.
Right now I’m not sold on what Donnie Nelson is doing to the team. Maybe his plan will work in time. I don’t know ,…… I hope.

not sure
what you’re referring to by “front sports page”, but most reports say they are entertaining offers, which is a little different than trying to trade him.
Regardless of what is reported, unless he’s done something really awful from a clubhouse chemistry/PR standpoint, I can’t see why Portland would actively want him out of town without getting back a substantial return via trade. Young, cheap players who produce at a high level aren’t abundant.
That front office is smart enough to take logical course of action: wait for a knockout offer, and if they don’t get it, either keep him or buy him out and let him go back to Spain.
