Recently I was watching something on NBA TV where they were talking about the Mav's season. They started talking about how talented Roddy is and then they said he could be put in the starting lineup. Leaving Caron and Marion to compete for the starting 3. I think this is an intriguing topic. Now if Caron accepted a bench role the Mavs would definitely have the best bench in the league to go with a very talented starting unit.
Are the Mavericks better with Caron Butler coming off the bench? I personally believe they would be. Caron's natural position is sf and he is more effective there. Roddy is a rising star and for him to become the guy Mark Cuban and others are drooling thinking about, he will need playing time. Playing 25-30 minutes a night most of which coming from sf, Butler would be the first guy off the bench. He would be the top option on the second team. Playing with Jason Terry and JJ both great scorers and shooters, the floor is spread for Butler to do his thing, and he'll have a bunch of open looks.
What second team can compete with the Mavs who have 3 starting caliber players off the bench? Coach Carlisle has a lot of flexibility and he can use the great depth to mix with lineups and keep teams guessing. What is the game plan going to be for other teams? How can they stop all the threats on this team?
The Mavs could have two 15 pt scorers off the bench. I like Butler off the bench because of his versatility. Also his size is an added bonus. I just didn't like having 3 undersized guards off the bench. You have Roddy, Jet, and JJ all bunched together on the bench. Butler makes the second unit much better defensively and also he adds toughness and good rebounding.
If needed the Mavs can switch Butler and Roddy anytime.
