Donnie Nelson: "Pierce was the safe money; Nowitzki was the smart money"
General Manager Donnie Nelson talks about growing up with the Mavericks' organization, the entrance of Mark Cuban, and the decision to draft Dirk Nowitzki over Paul Pierce.
With Dirk, it’s almost like a kid from American suburbia. Yeah, he has skill and the mindset but still, you have to be patient for two years. And you’re going to get your butt handed to you until this kid matures. That was the last thing Dallas wanted to hear. They hadn’t made the playoffs in like 10 years and we’re preaching patience. What flashed in my dad’s eyes that draft night was that Paul Pierce is a ready made, here and now product from right up the road. He was the sure fire thing. The safe money would have been on Paul, he steps right in. The smart money is on Dirk because he is 7-feet and Paul is 6-6. They are both great players but it is so incredibly hard to get size and skill in this league. People kill for it. They both are 1 and 1A in that draft. Believe me when I say we were just happy to survive with Dirk [laughs]. People put their necks on the line. Dirk first and foremost. He could have played in Europe for another two or three years. He took the majority of the risk. But there were a lot of guys in that draft room that put ‘em out on the table too.

good find
but
1. this belongs into a fanshot so that nobody sees or reads it ²
2. will then be put up on the FP so that everybody sees it but nobody reads it²
3. and then it will be tweeted around so that everybody reads it but nobody sees the irony
² according to Multiple Sources.

and then...
you waited until after it was moved to the fp to post your PGQ’s so that it would knock the post lower where nobody will see it hence making it resemble a fanshot.
Easy
I was the one that moved it to the front page, not him.
I can’t control the timestamp. When Lisa gets a chance, she can change it.

gut swooped in on you
he doesn’t even read fanshots. that’s hardcore.
i had opinions all typed up and everything, but they got jumbled, and i didn’t know where i was going with them.
donny is a good guy, but good guys should still be fired if they don’t perform to expectations.
that's none of your damn business and i'll thank you to stay out of my personal affairs.
I apologize
I looked in the wrong section before I posted it.
And I do read the fanshots…I just looked in the wrong section.
Again, I apologize.

ahhh
he did the wrong thing by not making it a fanshot and you did the right thing by fanshotting and fp-ing.
Ofc, he also did the right thing by linking and you did the wrong thing looking in the wrong section. So, yeah, there’s only one suitable solution…

Rocks in shoes have to be one of the most annoying things ever.
Fuck off rock, I’m trying to walk. JJ blows goats for fun.
Why insult your franchise player and compare him to being as effective as Paul Pierce
with the only difference being size… Good thing he didn’t say this pre-season or Dirk’d be in Chicago or Miami.
I think he has a pretty good handle on his relationship with Dirk...
and I think Dirk is humble enough that he probably views Pierce’s game as the same level as his.
Dirk>Pierce
What I find so unique about Dirk is that he’s a 7 foot shooter. He has one of the prettiest archs in his shot. the fade away is unguardable. Paul pierce is not the phenomena here, Dirk is. Are there any 7 footers who can shoot and easily replace Dirk since the draft? Nope. Paul Pierce? Lebron, Carmelo, D-Wade, the list goes on. I’d rather wait for the sensation than the safe bet
Fortunately the risky choice to draft Dirk paid off, because he is a once in a generation talent
Thankfully, he developed to what they thought he was going to be and not some like cheap rip-off like Andrea Bargnani.

the thing is in 20 years
who will be the standard? Paul or Dirk…..

Depends
on what you consider a “standard” I guess. Hard to call a player with the rare combination of size and talents a standard. I think phenomenon is more applicable in this case, Pierece would probably be the “standard” just because of his more conventional size and style of play.

Here's that Phillip dirt you were after. Reading some of the douchey comments by douches still makes me mad.
Diggler still posts but mostly at Lone Star Ball.
I forgot how many people we had posting here at one point. Oh well, root out the non-believers and leave only the truly blessed.
that was a fun little Sunday read
before my time. thanks to you guys for not hating me so hard when I showed up… and waiting until I was firmly entrenched :)

I totally forgot that Gershman took over due to all that stuff happening.
Then you divorced him and took his stuff. Typical woman.
that was all for you, loverboy.
JJ is not a contributing member of this organization and I will not grand him special favors just because he is an NBA Star.
