Mavericks chances at Dwight and Deron
The Mavericks obviously have an eye towards the future, as their moves this offseason would dictate. You have to ask yourself the question, will it all be worth it?
Looking at the Mavericks salary situation, following this year, assuming they amnesty Brendan Haywood and buy out Lamar Odom, they will have somewhere around 37 or 38 million dollars of cap space. If Deron Williams and Dwight both become free agents, the Mavericks should have enough cap space to sign both players. Is the fact that we have Dirk here in Dallas, enough to draw these two free agents in? Then there is the question of, will Dwight and Deron even reach free agency? It would appear that if the Nets or lLakers aquire Dwight in a trade, they will be able to offer Dwight a 5th year that the mavericks could not give him in free agency. This could be serious incentive for Dwight to resign with the team he was traded to. Will the Nets be good enough to convince these two players to stay in New Jersey, or will they look else where? Are the Lakers with Kobe Bryant more appealing to Dwight then a potential Dirk - Deron - Howard trio in Dallas? What do you guys think?

yeah
I think Deron may end up staying on the Nets until the end of this season. Dwight I think will be traded, but is it definite he will sign an extension? There’s no way to really tell. The 5th year obviously makes it more appealing to resign with the team he was traded too, but if Dwight feels he can’t get it done on the Lakers or the Nets, he may test free agency, and at the point anythings possible.
mavs aren't sweating on either player.
although yes, they do have cap space available. still wont hold my breath on it.
There's a very good chance it happens
The Nets gave up too many assets to trade for Williams only to trade him again this year, he will hit the open market.
The question mark is Howard, but can the Magic justify trading him in a year that they open a new building and host the all-star game. They are still a playoff team and by amnestying Arenas and trading a couple of young players (Nelson and Reddick) they can clear enough cap space to bring in a Deron Williams or Chris Paul and resign Howard. I think they may take the risk and hope that they can pair him up with an all-star point guard in Orlando will be enough.
The thing to keep in mind is this, only Dallas can afford to take on 2 max contracts and have a championship roster already built around the super stars. We can go over the cap to bring back Terry and Kidd. I am not sure about the Lamar Odom and Vince Carter situations with their non-guaranteed deals but if Dallas can hold onto them as well the team can smash the 72 win record….
Good points...
Until Rudy was traded today, I thought there was no way that Terry would be brought back to Dallas after this season. Terry believes he is worth a big extension here and I just do not agree that he is worth it. I like your scenario and I HOPE it works out according to the supposed plan.
It would be hard to smash the 72 win record....
I am just saying you would have to go 79-3 or 80-2 and that it aint happening.

Why would you ever amnesty Haywood's contract?
I actually believe he is good enough, compared to the rest of the centers in the league, to be someone who could be traded instead of having to amnesty his contract. Teams need centers and his contract is cheaper than Marion’s…just a thought.
In fact, a trade may be more than necessary to build a bench worthy of a championship contender….he might be able to pull in some much needed filler at that point.
possible
yeah definetly, if they can get a trade for him then by all means do it. Keep in mind though, you need Haywoods contract wiped out in order to make room to sign both guys, so you would have to get back something thats extremely cheap money wise. In order to do that the team your trading with can’t be over the cap or else they have to give back close to the amount of salary were giving up with Haywood. If the contracts we get back are one year deals no problem, it does somewhat limit our options in a way though.
My plan was looking at how it stands now, and i havent really heard anything about Haywood being moved yet.
