Mavs won't have cap space for 2 max contracts next year.
Why do people think Cuban can get both Deron Williams and Dwight Howard? According to Hoopworld, Dallas has $37,968,577* already committed to players in 2012-13. They could knock $8.3mm off of that by amnestying Haywood or Marion next summer, but then they'd only be $28.3mm* below the likely cap of $58mm (which assumes league revenue will be steady). That's nowhere near enough to sign 2 stars. According to the new CBA guidelines 7+ year veterans can get 30% of the cap. So, Deron and Dwight could get a little over $17mm per. I don't see two free agents each leaving $12mm (over four years) on the table.
For those that dream of Dirk giving another discount to make this possible, Dirk is due $20,907,128 in 2012/13 and $22,721,381 in 2013/14. Splitting Dirk's salary with both FAs would bring the per-player salary up to a little under $17mm, and I'd be pleasantly surprised if Dirk forfeiting $10mm he already has under contract.
That said, I'll be ecstatic if they get one of the marquee guys. One player to take some of the pressure off of Dirk as he ages would be unbelievably important short- and long-term. I think the most likely to be available is Deron, if NJ strikes out on Howard. Also, if you're curious, here's the full list of other free agents for next summer.
Also, could we quit talking about Dalembert signing now? The Mavs can only offer min deals since they've dealt their exception, and a center like Dalembert won't go for that. If you think the Mavs should get him, use the trade machine to figure out how it would work on a $10-11mm deal. We're looking for guys that are unlikely to have large offers elsewhere.
*edit: I forgot to subtract Rudy and Brewer when first posted. Also, Vince Carter's 2013 and 2014 salary is partially guaranteed, so that will eat up a little cap space, too. Further clarification on potential star salaries was also added later.

It wont matter anyways
Nets are about to acquire Howard. There goes our chance to get either one.
you're going to assume that deal's done?
After the last few days, I’m not buying into any signing or trade until I see the player in a different uniform.
You’re right that Dwight to NJ would likely kill the availability of both he and Deron.
Even if the signing of a star doesn’t happen, there are some other nice players that will be available, and the flexibility will be very useful in other ways too.
cap space
Kidd and terry are free agents next year…. amnesty haywood…. buy out lamar odom.. they just traded fernandez and brewer.. that leaves somewhere around 36 million in cap spacec

$43,844,385 doesn’t include Kidd, Terry, or Odom. You are right, though that I hadn’t subtracted Rudy or Brewer. That would leave $37,968,577. Amnesty would bring down to a little under $30mm. So about $28mm in cap space (assuming league revenue stays pretty level). Two stars would have to take huge paycuts to fit under that.
Not huge
each takes $13 million each year. That’s about $2 million less than the max.

Not for 7+ year veterans, which Deron and Dwight would be:
According to the new CBA guidelines 7+ year veterans can get 30% of the cap. So, Deron and Dwight could get a little over $17mm per. Plus, Dirk is due $20,907,128 in 2012/13 and $22,721,381 in 2013/14. I don’t see two free agents each leaving $16mm (over four years) on the table, and Dirk forfeiting $16mm he already has under contract.
(adding this to the main article, thanks for pointing out it needed clarification)
Rudy and Corey make up about 6 million that's gone from that 43 number.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Just remember that in the new CBA teams are allowed to renegotiate contracts down.
Dirk would never be the reason we don’t get Howard and Williams.
Don't the trade exceptions work in our favor?
the 3 mil and 2.2 mil from Rudy and Brewer?
Let’s say we use those exceptions in this – one to acquire Deron or Dwight in the middle of the season, and the other to acquire a tradeable contract to be signed-and-traded or whatever at the end of the season, creating a larger exception?
What I’m saying, is that there are front office minds that know a lot more about the numbers than what you’ve posted. You’ve got to think they are fully aware and we are not.
But let’s say Deron goes for XX million; and a 4 year deal (we can’t offer a 5 year deal and they’d have to sign-and-trade him, which Jersey may do, but I won’t count on it). Either way, he has an option at $17.8 mil next year. So plug $17.8 mil in for Deron.
Let’s say we sign-and-trade Howard mid-season (or within the next few days, if he forces the hand and we find a way to pull it off). Howard’s got an option in his contract for $19.54 mil next year if he doesn’t opt out. We can sign him long term, and use that number for the cap for next season. So plug in $19.54 mil for next season.
$30 + 19.54 + 17.8 = $67.34 mil. Use the $3 + 2.2 = 5.2 trade exception, and we’re at 62.14 mil. The cap will most likely be at $59 to 60 mil. What contracts are we going to trade in a sign-and-trade? Probably Roddy, who is on the books for about $2 mil, which puts us at $60.14 mil. We’re close.
My point is, I think this can work with a roster of Deron, Dominique Jones, Shawn Marion, Dirk and Dwight Howard; the question remains: how do we fill out the rest of that roster?
Maybe we have to shed Marion in this process; maybe we have to get somebody to take less money; maybe we have to sign a bunch of league minimum players – and I don’t have an idea how that works. And I don’t know how we get under the cap, then get back over – is that legal? To take the hit again to fill out the roster once we’ve secured Howard and Deron? But I think we can make this work…not that it WILL work, but it’s possible.

I admit I'm not a full-fledged cap expert, but I haven't heard one expert say Mavs could fit 2 max players.
there are front office minds that know a lot more about the numbers than what you’ve posted. You’ve got to think they are fully aware and we are not.
I agree with you there, but then you go on to guess at ways that the Mavs could finagle a system you, by your own admission, don’t understand. Until Donnie Nelson, Mark Cuban, or someone else with a strong understanding of the cap says that the math works for 2 max players next summer, I’m not going to even consider it possible.
Larry Coon is the best salary cap journalist I’ve found. Here’s what he says in his excellent Salary Cap FAQ about the trade exceptions you are trumpeting: “There are some common misconceptions… teams cannot use a Traded Player exception to sign free agents; it can be used only to acquire existing contracts from other teams. For another, teams cannot combine a Traded Player exception with other exceptions (such as the Mid-Level exception or the 125% plus $100,000 margin from another trade) in order to trade for a more expensive player.” So, you can wipe that 5.2mm out of your calculations.
Also, do think it’s realistic that Dallas will be able to trade for Howard? Did you see what Orlando just turned down? Cuban would have to fleece and 3rd and possible 4th party to make that trade happen.
a potential silver lining...
in case deron or any other highly coveted PG become unavailable to us next season, i honestly would hope that an effort is made to get NASH back in the family to split minutes with kidd for next season…not only does the whisper of such a reality ensure that it would be a major crowd pleaser just for nostalgia alone, but you would have the two best point guards of the last decade (undisputable FACT) which automatically makes the mavericks the team with the highest IQ and on-court leadership ability…hell, you would even see a mass exodus of fans from every other team tuning in to watch them play together with dirk, people who otherwise had never thought of watching a mavs game…have kidd handle the defensive situations and put in steve when we need brilliant playmaking or clutch shooting…sounds like a smart business move to me!…will it happen? haha, no…could it happen? i dont know, but im willing to bet that nash’s “sun” will set a few months from now…its just a matter of those it would concern not thinking its a ludicrous suggestion that could only be born from the ignorance of a fan.
