What do we think of the Chris Paul LeBacle?
I figure if the NBA is trying to keep things from happening that makes teams too good, that ship has way sailed. But sound off below.
Poll after the jump.

It's stupid
I’m far from a Lakers fan but they won. They made the best offer soonest. If the other teams just want to cry gay and say the NBA is playing favorites, fuck ‘em. It’s bullshit. LA did the right work at the right time and the numbers worked, they should get him. The trade being blocked is more of a farce than if it had been made IMO.

At first I lol'd
but then I had to apologize for ‘basketball reasons’.

Should have let the Lakers make the mistake.
The Lakers thought that filling out a roster with 3 injury-plagued stars and filler was a good idea. I disagree and wish the league had allowed that to blow up in their faces.
Wait you think they made a mistake?
People are really overrating Gasol and/or Odom. You do realize that 3 stars and filler made it to the Finals last year right? Just because they lost doesn’t make what they did less impressive.
This is a terrible thing the NBA has done. To avoid the appearance of impropriety, they’ve actually created impropriety by seeming to placate the most vocal owners. What’s worse is that they specifically attributed it to “basketball reasons.” It’s one thing if they block a trade because New Orleans is taking on too much salary, but that’s clearly not what killed it.
This is a very big black mark on the league and a terrible precedent to set.
And Morey is right at the forefront of overrating Gasol.
I still can’t believe that happened last night.
Hollinger had a smart article illustrating that this trade would have favored Houston and NO more than LA. He explained how Paul, Kobe, and Bynum’s games wouldn’t gel very effectively, and he didn’t even touch on the fact that all three have a history of knee problems.
Gasol, with likely Nene to follow, in Houston would have been a very nice haul for the Rockets.
I doubt NO gets as much back in any future deal for Paul, if they can trade him at all.
It would've been a great trade for NO
he’s way off base on Houston though. That’s an awful trade for them.
Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and 2012 Knick's first-round pick, for Gasol and enough cap space to sign a max free agent.
I’d rather build a team around Gasol and Nene than Scola, Dragic, and Martin. Size kills, and their D would have improved just from the absence of Martin.
You don't build around Gasol.
They already tried that in Memphis. He’s a very good player, but an older one who’s only going to decline from here.
It would have been terrible for Houston. Absolutely terrible.
This is a joke right?
The Memphis team which had ONLY Mike Miller and Pao finished with a record of 49-33. Who else did they have? Eddie Jones in his 3rd to last season, Shane Battier? Their best rebounder was Pao Gasol and their second was Mike Miller who didn’t even start.
The Rockets team with Nene would be exponentially better than that Memphis team.
Pao Gasol will be in a #1 role which will mean more touches for him, and probably around 19-22 Ppg which will be even with his time in Memphis.
Just look at these rosters and think about it:
Chucky Atkins(11.4ppg, 3.0 Apg, 2Rpg)
Eddie Jones(12ppg, 2.5apg, 4rpg)
Shane Battier(10ppg, 1.7apg, 5.3rpg)
Pao Gasol(20.5ppg, 4.5apg, 9rpg)
Lorenzen Wright(6ppg, .6apg, 5.1rpg)
Kyle Lowry(13.5ppg, 7apg, 4rpg) – He isn’t even in his prime yet and had one of the best 2nd halves of any player last year.
Courtney Lee(8.3ppg, 1.2apg, 2rpg) This was in 20 minutes playing time on a new team. Once again, he should improve not only due to increased minutes but growing older.
Chase Budinger(14ppg, 2.5apg, 4rpg) As a starter last year. This will be his 3rd season in the NBA.
Pao Gasol(19ppg, 3.3apg, 10.2rpg) With Bynum and Kobe on the team
Nene(14.5ppg, 2apg, 7.5rpg) He is coming off one of his best seasons.
That’s a playoff team if I’ve ever seen one, I would put this team down for a 4 or 5 seed in The West.
Thank you.
Despite your persistent misspelling of “Pau,” this is a good takedown of brettgardner’s lazy analysis. I wanted to do the same but didn’t have the time.
Another point you neglected, though, is that the Rockets could potentially flip some of their other assets for another upgrade. Daryl Morey has to be pissed right now.
Pau’s a clear upgrade over Scola, they’re probably glad to unload Dragic, with Lowry and Flynn needing his PT, and K-Mart doesn’t play any defense. The 1st rd pick makes it a non-slam-dunk, but that’s why they had to include it.
Yah.. I was in Math Class at the time..
But yes, definitely, he is extremely pissed, it apparently set the Rockets back 3 years. I mean, there would still be guys like Morris, Twill, Patterson, Hill, and Thabeet on that team, they could easily get a back up SG with that. And if they Amnesty Thabeet, they would get an MLE Player.
Lulz
After the boring shitfest that was the lockout, I’m happy to be entertained by the drama. As long as nothing crazy directly affects my teams, I don’t give a fuck and I won’t apologize for not thinking about the big picture right now. I just want to see some basketball!

A new era in the NBA
If you’re not good enough to lead your team to a championship, just take a dump on the city that trusted you, on the fans that cheered for you, on the team that paid your bills. Instead of getting better and making your teammates better, hold your team hostage and demand a trade to a team with another All-Star (or two). Just quit, don’t bother honoring your 8-figures-per-year contract, go where the sun shines or where you can get to see your face in a billboard on a skyscraper. So glad we got Dirk.

That’s me crying under my desk

"I don't want no damn welfare pencil!"
I think so.
We can field a better deal than Brook Lopez for sure.
No we can't.
The Mavs don’t have trade assets that compare to potential offerings of NJ, Boston, LA (both), OKC, etc. Another indicator that Cuban’s right to redirect things.
I was super sad about that
And it sounds like he’s retiring selflessly to prevent Portland from having to pay his amnesty for him to go to another team or pay his salary for him to become a minor bench role player after the doctor said he can never play like he used to. Seems like a great guy and a great player, so I feel really bad for Portland right now. At least he goes out on a good memory for Portland fans with last year’s miracle playoff comeback.

Want to add
Humble players committed to their team like Brandon Roy, Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Durant are a rare breed of superstar these days. Very sad for the league’s future – now everyone want to do the Lebron James.

This makes me even sadder.
He’s one of the few good guy stars and until the very end he’s being classy.
I’ve read around twitter (forgot the source) that there is a possibility he’ll “unretire” next season. Nothing is official yet though.

At first I thought it was a great deal for New Orleans
Then I saw the salary numbers – how does that work? New Orleans would be taking on $15 million more in contracts, while the Lakers and Houston would increase cap space. I don’t blame the owners for not wanting to do that, even if the deal was good enough for the team in their quest to find an owner. I suppose they’d fill the loss of David West’s salary, but still I’d assume they’re increasing over last year’s salaries.
they would have to get rid of Okafor to make it work
the question is though where does he go?
I don’t see the Laker paying 12+ mill for a backup to Bynum(though with his injury history that might not be a bad Idea)
and if he goes to the Rockets, it would kill their ability to get Nene’….
Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Now, if somebody doesn’t agree with that, that’s cool. I also don’t agree with the fact that I don’t have $10 million in my bank account. But the fact that I don’t agree with it doesn’t make it any less true.
