Will the Mavericks regret losing out on Harris?

Obviously, it's already too late. Devin Harris will likely never return to Dallas within his prime. But I'm just wondering how many of you out there would have pulled the trigger for Harris. Giving up Caron Butler is huge, but it's still a question whether or not he's returning this year or not. Dominique Jones might be a career role player. And the first rounder, let's hope, won't be that big of an asset come draft time.

Im shocked they didn’t pull the trigger. Holding onto Butlers expiring contract + his injury. and a First for a previous all star that helped get you to the finals. He’s 27 too.

Doesn’t make sense. Perhaps the FO was being too stubborn to show the Kidd trade wasn’t worth it or something.

This would have freaked out San Antonio.

I’m leaning toward the fact that we’ll regret this. Unless Butler becomes a productive mainstay in Dallas for years to come. Thoughts of Harris, Beaubois, Dirk and Chandler gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. With that lineup, I can live with Marion/Peja at the three spot.

Butler+DoJo+a 1st Rounder?

Is it just me or does this seem like a pretty high price for Devin Harris? Butler or DoJo, but not both.

by Why on Feb 24, 2011 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

I didn’t think so. Especially since we’re trying to win now. DoJo looks like a career role player. Devin Harris would give us more length and size at the 1 or 2 spot. Given the fact that our guards are Barea, Terry and Beaubois, that would be an attribute that required a premium. Especially for a productive PG.

Injured Butler with expiring contract. Why are you all leaving this fact out??

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

Not ignoring it, but people seem to be focused on the thought that Butler, DoJo and the 1st rounder was too much to send for Devin Harris.

Because he still has some worth to us for this season

Since there’s a decent enough chance he’ll be back, he still has some worth to us for this season.

I wouldn’t be upset at this trade really, just wondering if they couldn’t have found a better deal.

by Why on Feb 27, 2011 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

No because I don't think the Nets would have gone through with it

until they knew they couldn’t get D-Will. So, I think even if we had given the Nets the go ahead that they would have just turned around and gotten the Jazz deal done anyways. I don’t really feel like we lost anything.

but the offer was on the table and the mavs said no. It’s not hypothetical.

Hmm....

No. The longer you think about this, the less likely it is that NJ would have confirmed that deal if Dallas agreed. Butler, DoJo+pick are nothing compared to what Utah had. If i’m NJ, i’ll drag it out and ask for more (similar to DEN), trying to drive the price up between Portland and Dallas, esp. before the deadline.

NJ got pretty much max value for Favors+Harris, even if they are uncertain if they can bank on D-Will’s staying.

And for Dallas, Harris doesn’t really fill a need. That’s because of Carlisle and the JJ thing. And a little Rodrigue, too.
I like Devin, but him, Kidd, Jet, French Jesus and Barea(coaches darling) at the backcourt guards? Crowded.

Now granted, Dallas tried to use Harris as a flippingstone to get Williams later, as Bryan mentioned and Stein reports. Utah acted faster. Nobody expected the Mormons Miller to make up their minds that fast.

i am on the trade for no other PG except D-Will or D-Rose wagon

so, if Harris was a means to get D-Will, then tough luck for the Mavs that Utah went straight to the supplier and bypassed a projected retailer.

Agree, NJ might just start a bidding war if Dallas took the bait.

I think I was the first to suggest the flipping stone idea for Harris back in January

but it was to get Rubio and Beasely back in this post
http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2011/1/10/1926118/mavs-looking-to-bring-back-harris#56583305

But if the Mavs made it a four team deal in the melodrama……who knows. Maybe a five team deal would be better, sending Harris to Minnesota and bringing Beasley and Rubio to the Mavs.

and then again here

maybe
they just want Devin to trade for someone else

but I don’t really count like BG and Stein

I still say no

I just don’t think we need him and I’d still rather take my chances at holding on to Butler over seeing if Harris is as good as the hype at this point.

your SF’s are already playing well. Why keep a 3rd SF whos injured with an expiring contract when you can bring in an All star to upgrade at PG from a 38 year old to a 27 year old?

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

by Spurs Yoda on Feb 24, 2011 1:16 PM CST up reply actions

To me it's like this

Yes, our other SFs are holding their own but none of them really have the consistent scoring potency of Butler. We need as many scoring threats as possible. Even with what we have now we still sometimes live or die based on whether or not Terry has a good night. I will admit that this analysis was mostly made before Peja was really in the mix but all perimeter shooters get cold sometimes. I’m still a bit nervous relying on him in a playoff situation.

As for the PG upgrade, I’m not sure that Harris is really as special as people make him out to be. I think it’s quite possible that Roddy or JJ could surpass him fairly soon and we already have them so we don’t risk giving away more than he’s worth.

This may be true if Butler is health.

Harris helped bring the Mav’s to the finals, Kidd has not. Also, Harris is 27, Kidd 38. Roddy may have potential as a combo guard, but JJ is beyond streaky.

by Spurs Yoda on Feb 25, 2011 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

To suggest Kidd wouldn't have brought similar results

in the year the Mavs went to the finals is speaking too high of Devin Harris. The NBA was just not full of talented teams. When you compare the talent on playoff teams this year to then, it’s a whole lot different.

I just don’t think we were looking for a PG upgrade. If it was for an SG or SF who could have an impact, it would be a different discussion. I wouldn’t like Harris playing the 2 either.

by Why on Feb 27, 2011 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

with the addition of Peja,

I think the biggest reason Butler is missed is because he’s a two way player and Peja is limited on the defensive end. But Caron has been known to have some really big games on the offensive end, though not consistently.

by young guns on Feb 25, 2011 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

No doubt, the biggest thing we miss from Caron is his contribution on the defensive end. We have enough weapons, especially with Roddy B and Peja, to make up for the offense. It’s just the defense. You can see it in the numbers, our defense has slacked off since we lost Caron.

I agree with this

I would do either Butler + first rounder or Butler + Jones….

But all three is too much to be giving up….

I think even Butler + Jones is too much

1 player and the pick, maybe. I still don’t think Harris is all that and I’m glad we didn’t lose anything. I would have been ok with Terry for Harris even up and not much else.

by elbow greater than face on Mar 1, 2011 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

Utah made out like bandits

I’m guessin it 2011 and 2013 first round picks. This years Nets pick is almost for sure a lottery pick, plus Favors. And Harris who they could re-trade before the deadline if they want to. That’s what I’d do, either to Minnesota or Portland.
And Williams would’ve probably left in 2012 anyway

by young guns on Feb 23, 2011 10:39 PM CST reply actions

All I can say is

hindsight is 20/20. I’ve learned to stop giving a shit about these kinds of discussions (no offense to you or these points, just these general discussions) because it is too easy to look back and say “they should have done this” because, well, it was in the past.

Things are different in the heat of the moment. Look at the Titans for example. Drafting Young seemed like a great idea, and had errbody fired up. Look at them now.

I get what you’re saying. But I, personally, enjoy the hypothetical or what could have been conversations. Probably because I would love to run an NBA team.
