Around SBN: Heating Up: Miami Evens Series; LeBron, Wade Take Charge

Oh you Dallas Mavs...

I was young, maybe 7 years old?  I, like every other Texas boy, was too young to start playing football.  My parents decided that the next best thing was soccer.  They put me in the closest YMCA soccer league, and hoped the best thing I can learn from soccer was teamwork, footplay, toughness and I could apply that to my very first football season.  I became good enough that I was able to venture to the Reunion Arena for the youth sports championship, in which the champion would get the rare chance to meet Tatu of the acclaimed Dallas Sidekicks.

I didn't get that chance, and as a disappointed kid, I hung my head and ventured off of the astroturf.. a young kid not getting the shot to meet his hero...  As I left, I met a giant, a man that towered above me and said "dont worry about it, you'll get them next year kid".  He had a basketball jersey on and was getting ready for shootaround.  He was unrecognizable to me, I mean who cared about basketball in Dallas?  The Mavericks were a Dallas team by name, but they were more a filler between the Cowboys' seasons.  They hadn't even pulled up the turf yet to let him feel the hardwood beneath his feet.  He practiced his shot on the same fake grass that I had just gotten embarrassed on, "you'll get them next year kid".   That moment, that very second, Rolando Blackman made me a MFFL.  I realized that even though my jumpshot resembled JJ's one footer, my heart had shades of green and blue.

I watched, in pain, as the Mavericks struggled and fought, sometimes with each other, as they strung together makeshift teams trying to fight the greats and claw their way into a chance for greatness.

And as I realized that my hopes were dwindling, I threw my hands up and kicked every piece of electronic equipment when the Dallas Mavericks traded Robert "Tractor" Taylor, a dominant force, for a German high schooler, someone that's English was suspect, and toughness was on par with that of a Swedish quilt maker.

..and then I fell in love.  This tall, lanky, awkward looking 7 footer showed me something I'd never seen in a Dallas Cowboy, a Texas Ranger, a Dallas Sidekick, my hero,  I saw a kid that wanted nothing more than to compete with the very best in the world's most competitive league, and to prove to the world that he is capable of true greatness.

I've seen the Cowboys win Super Bowls.  I've been up at 2am when the Stars have won the Stanley Cup.  I've seen the Rangers fight bankruptcy to go to the World Series.

...but I've never been drawn to tears like I was last night when a Dallas team gets "that chance".  I've never looked at every person on a roster and said "that guy deserves it".  I've never looked at my girlfriend/sister/wife and as she looked at me, there weren't any words to be said, because we both knew that this team, for a second, made life make sense for just one time.

I want to thank the MMB community for being such a torrential force.  A clan that can be hysterical and genius at the same time.  Jon and Marie reminded me of "back in the day" when there were only 10 of us on this thing arguing back and forth how the Mav's could finally become champs.

A shout out to Wes, who brought a lot of us here and kept us interested.  And credit due to LJ and her him minions for the incredible job on keeping masses that be in the faith.

-A dumb 7 year old that wondered why those guys in the ugly green jerseys were stepping on the Sidekick's floor

BTW.. JJ still sucks..

I can never thank enough for the mavs..

Giving the one person that gave me interest in basketball for 16 yrs Jason Kidd his Championship. All the puzzle was in place, and they knew it.

I agree on on your killer motto… JJ sucks.. :) but this sucker was the best help we had.. and WE won it all. Somehow the hate on JJ went to him, and the little fella proves he is a worthy teamate to our beloved mavs. SO thanks to you.. JJ sucks and JJ knows it.

I love you

Seriously, we had some good times when we were such a small group, lovingly bitching about Stackhouse, Damp, pizza hands Bass, Josh Howard, Devin, and many other players that deserved our collective wrath. It was this group that taught me to hate the Spurs (being an Orlando resident, I had no idea I was supposed to hate them) and made me feel that the Mavs were my team and didn’t consider me an outsider looking in. So, many thanks to Wes (wherever he is) and everyone else for being so awesome, and I’m glad that the MMB community is growing so that more people can appreciate how wonderful (and wonderfully infuriating) this team really is.

I’m feeling all nostalgic now!

Those were so great

Our blowout loss to the Suns is still my favorite game day thread, though…make that my second favorite, since Sunday’s post-game thread is now on top of the list.

How can I forget to mention THE GEORGE up there…

Unlike the Madden Jinx

This might reverse-jinx the 2K franchise and bankrupt it. I approve of this cover

I am one of the LJ babies (or whatever you may call that)

I only got here at the time that Lisa was just beginning to manage the blog, with a different username, due to the fact that I had no fast and stable internet until only around 2 years ago. I also didn’t know there is some kind of online Mavs community that exists out here.

As a Dirk and Mavs fan since my elementary school days, the championship alone is a very huge reason to be happy, but the feeling is much greater when I know that there are people out here, whom I haven’t even met personally, that shares the same joy and shed tears like I did. I’m so glad I discovered this blog. I love you guys.

It was a different day, less people, more opinions..

As go the Mavs go the Mavs’ community. We all are in it together and share the glories and the past defeats.
#TEAM.

I was an MMB lurker since 09 and just joined this blog around January 2010 with a different username as well and a bunch of Homer Simpson avatars.

It’s amazing how you guys grew from a 10-something group to what it is now. You guys are great and totally deserve the long wait for the ’chip.

I think I joined around Wes' last moments, then LJ took the reins

But I dont care, my love for the Mavs remains constant. From the days of them being the bottom feeding team from the 90’s that you take down first in the old NBA Jam game, to the heartbreak of 2006, to my numerous curse filled rants from getting beat in the first rounds afterwards, to the triumph of today. Thanks Mavs for breaking the glass ceiling, for getting a lot of deserving players their first rings, for taking down a great evil, for giving us all something to believe in. And thank you Mavs Moneyball for if anything, putting up with my goofy ass.

I can still remember Wes' goodbye/turning-over-to-LJ post which was the first post I read in this blog.

After which I was one of those craving (demanding? complaining?) for more articles/posts here. Of course, Lisa and the crew delivered. Good job.

ha

I think you mis-remember… philip was the manager for a time before my ex took over (for like a day and a half) and then he handed it over to me.

I did saw a Wes' goodbye/turnover post though.

I’m not really sure about the exact events. I was a little inactive back then, just browsing on the articles. I can’t even remember my first username. Ha.

I don't know why Wes hasn't shown up yet.

He’s still hanging around Big D Soccer, something tells me he needs to be summoned for old times’ sakes…
