Here's a Name That You Haven't Heard In a While
A brief update on Nick Calathes, the 6'6" point guard from Florida who the Mavericks own rights to. Apparently he was in the States to watch Games 5 and 6. When a 2nd rounder goes to Europe, you may never hear from them again (Shan Foster, anyone?), but from the sounds of it Calathes may be ready to head to the NBA in a year or two.

im stoked about the draft in next week..
hopefully the mavs can draft a good power forward. or make some moves to bring Jimmer Freddette :-p
looks like a 6'6 chris quinn
what i like though: head always up, uses his size well, gets easy layups vs small pgs
J.UST E.NJOY T.HIS S.HIT
Let's compare
Late second round pick
Over 6’6’’
Played overseas for a couple of years before joining the team that drafted him
Manu Ginobili!
I like.
If JJ is going to be resigned, and with the coming of Calathes sooner or later, Roddy will have no spot on the probable future plans, unless he unleashes the beast next season (if there will be any).

It's surely interesting
Because JJ is not a traditional Point, but works as a backup. Roddy in my eyes is too small for a 2 so he has to develop PG skills. But don’t judge him just yet. Stephen Curry, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook and Roddy are all 22, have all played their second season this year and all of them are more Scorer than Point. Deron Williams and Chris Paul (25 & 26, both 6 seasons) are way ahead in that regard for example. It just takes time.
Interesting indeed.
Roddy is not the only sophomore player who experienced a slide this season and he was injured in a huge chunk of the year unlike those other 2nd year players. I’m thinking it could only get better from here. Let’s see.

this may be my own ignorance shining through
but how is JJ not a traditional point guard?

I think he’s more the dynamic backup off the bench, who can make plays for himself and not so much for his teammates. You have to ask yourself if you want him to run a team for, let’s say, 35 minutes? Don’t know. Too many times he fails to get the ball to Dirk or even Marion in the post where you initially think: “Kidd would have managed to do that.”
I will say he's improved in that area
he used to be a turnover machine (or so it seemed… I was corrected on that stat, it wasn’t as bad as we all thought) but he’s getting smarter.

more of a shoot first guy
the “traditional” point guard I suppose is the pure point guard archetype, like Kidd/Stockton.

shoot first...
IIR, he dribbles for about 45 minutes :)
I love the guy, and I think he’s a pretty normal PG he just happens to be the right size for a high school bball team, not the NBA.

Our ideas about each position and what skills those positions should possess are in need of some change, I think. I would argue that fans, media members and sometimes even coaches get too caught up in such preconceived notions. Point guards should all pass, centers should all block shots, etc. The truth is it’s fluid game and so labels that attempt to rigidly define who does what are at best pointless and at worst a distraction. As long as the five men on the floor have a diverse enough skill set to compliment one another adequately, that’s all that matters.
As you mention, Russell Westbrook is a scoring point guard, but as we saw in the playoffs the presence of a guy like Harden, who plays the 2 but has passing skills and makes great decisions with the ball, can equalize things. The pairing of Harden and Westbrook was no accident, of course, as GM Sam Presti saw a similar backcourt as an assistant with the Spurs in Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.
If Dallas decides to try and build with Roddy in the post-Kidd/Terry era, it won’t be the worst thing in the world if Roddy doesn’t develop into Magic Johnson. They’ll just need to find someone to share the backcourt with him that can be his Ginobli or his Harden.

Agreed
I think the presence of JKidd over the last few years has warped Mavs fans’ impressions of what a traditional point guard is. I like Kidd quite a bit, but most traditional point guards are not going to give you more assists than points.

Nick can shoot a very good replacement for any of the guys who might leave.

for what it's worth
he was named to 1st team all-defense this past year, and he won the Eurobasket Most Improved Player award, also

just to clarify
Nick Calathes wasn’t “sent to Europe”. He was pretty universally considered a first round talent who chose to go to Greece before the draft combine, as his brother was playing there and his Greek heritage and dual citizenship presented a unique personal opportunity.
And he’d be a senior right now had he stayed at Florida.
I’ve said before that I think buying him out and letting Barea go is what I’d like to see happen. Especially since as a big guard with point skills that can check 2’s, he’s the ideal compliment to Roddy and can switch defensive assignments with him, like Kidd does.
I see JJ
Leaving as someone is going to overpay for him, Chandler should and will be our first priority.
gagree. this guy and Roddy would soften the JJ blow if somebody overpays

what were Nicks
numbers like? i would check but our IT guy is a web nazi. If Chandler stays we have a really good shot at a repeat, i dont think the young guns in the west are ready yet and the old guard is just too old. Happily my Mavs fall inbetween.
According to Wikipedia
7.8 points , 3.2 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in 19.9 minutes last season. He has won national titles both years with Panathinaikos and he also was member of Eurobasket.com All-Greek A1 League 1st Team, Eurobasket.com All-Defensive Team and won the title of Eurobasket.com Most Improved Player of the Year. Sounds promising, but you never know…

Don’t be too optomistic about FAs. As champs, Mavs are targets, and not just from NBA teams. If there’s a lockout we also have to worry about European teams making offers JJ, Tyson, Caron, or D-Steve can’t refuse. What if Barcelona offers JJ a nice, full season salary to be Ricky Rubio’s replacement? That would have to sound better than half season or less in a newly hard-capped NBA.
I think the NBA will lose 4-6 FA’s to Europe for every month of lockout. If it were me I’d certainly be open to getting millions to play in a good league and hang out in the Mediterranean.

I dont know about any of the current mavs leaving for
Europe Mabye Peja, but i dont see him coming back next year anyway. Anyway hopefully a new cba get ironed out quickly like the NFL did theirs.
I don't think it's that easy.
Younger players coming out of college can go to Europe because they won’t have wives or children to care for. I don’t see guys like Tyson Chandler uprooting their families just because the NBA might miss a month or two.
Your 2010-11 NBA Champions... the Dallas Mavericks
doubt it since the team are this years nba champions..
from the looks of it i think their going to stay. the team turned into a core that no opponent could beat. the players i could see leaving are peja, roddy, or maybe brewer. other than that JJ has already planted himself for los mavs franchise. cuban will still be able to sign players if there is a lockout.
If I remember right, we have Brewer on a multi-year contract
Roddy will definitely be around, too. It seems like JJ and Peja are the most likely to go. As much as we love Barea, the Mavs have three young guards coming up (Roddy, Dojo and Calathes) and they will not be able to overpay him when he is so close to being replaced.

heh, JJ is going to stay obviously...
word out in the street say him and dirk are best buds. so, no bro. peja might retire since he is aged and has a ring. dojo isnt even ready to play yet unless it is the texas legends. mavs are set for point guards. roddy is a great trading chip. which could help bring in a good power forward or guard.
oh and i had to throw this in. since los mavs won a championship.

lol, who is calethas?
he isn’t a world champ like our 2 guards (kidd and JJ) he can stay overseas… for now.
actually he is
A two time Greek League champion and Euroleague champion.

“word out in the street say him and dirk are best buds. so, no bro.”
I think lots of us were saying the same during Nash’s free agency. Cuban doesn’t need to overpay in free agency for a combo guard right now.
My point is that most reporters are saying the CBA negotiations are looking ugly. If the NBA has a partial season, that means partial salaries for every player. Panathaniakos, Barcelona, and others have lots of money and can pay these guys full salaries for a full season. Money talks.
Besides that, within the NBA many teams will have more cap flexibility than the Mavs. And we don’t know how restrictive the new CBA will be. I’m concerned about Chandler and JJ. We can’t take anything for granted.
alot of players just get stashed
in europe to mature. i dont see 4-6 guys leaving to go there. Possibly 4-6 total go.
seems that way...
but Josh Childress played there for a couple years, and Kristic just signed with a European team. This lockout could be seen by a couple European teams as a huge opportunity to bring in talent and notoriety.
I could certainly be wrong, and I hope I am, but this could be a huge factor this summer.
