Re-sign Chandler, Butler and Barea for 2012 blockbuster Trades

First step to the blockbuster is signing the talent before it gets away, by biting the bullet and re-signing Chandler, Butler, and Barea. We have to make sure the salaries won’t kill the deals by being too high or too low. Also, picking up Cardinal and Stevenson will help us fill out the roster without too much expense. Stevenson probably wants more and we shouldn’t pay more since we won’t have the CAP to do it.
First blockbuster would be based on Chandler and Butler for Dwight Howard during the next year before Orlando loses any value for the all-star, and Howard likes Dallas. This improves our front court and removes the conflict at SF, Marion gets to start again, which worked out very well in the finals. Of course building up Butler’s value during the season before the trade, is important.
Second blockbuster would be based on Barea and (either Roddy or DoJo) for Deron Williams, who also likes Dallas. This trade will need more and the Nets have been willing trading partners in the past. This gives us our starting PG going forward and let’s Kidd retire knowing the team is in good hands. Stevenson could sweeten this deal if we are able to sign him, but most likely we will be dealing with picks and cash to make it happen before the summer.
After the blockbusters, the Mavs have Howard, Nowitzki, Marion(Butler), Beaubois(Jones), Williams as the starting lineup, with Haywood, Cardinal, Brewer, Terry for 2nd string, leaving us a hole at backup PG unless a draft pick steps up to perform. Another option here could be to pick up Steve Nash, summer 2012, for a year or two so he can end his career in Dallas where he started, like Kidd. But until the summer we will need someone from the draft or FA to fill the PG or G backup role, shifting Terry to backup PG if needed, or sharing the role with Beaubois(Jones).
Lastly, filling the rest of the roster may be approached the same as this past year, find past 1st rounders and international players that are available for the minimum or a bit more. The Mavs will look to be a contender for the next decade and could win many more titles. Go Mavs!

Orlando Trade:

Where does that leave Orlando after the trade? Chandler is going to have a ridiculous contract, Butler is going to have a big contract too. It’s Rashard Lewis all over again. They have no superstar and aren’t going to win games with the trade. Trade away the person you are building around to win a championship for Overpayed Tyson Chandler and the 3rd scoring option on a Championship team? Makes no sense. Remember they made the Finals before, sure they got beat, but they made it. They need another superstar to pair with Dwight, he said it himself. They’re not going to try to trade him, they’re going to try to build around him.

Nets Trade:

Give away the best player on your team, that you pretty much unloaded your whole roster for, and in return get an unproven Youngster and a Midget who might be skilled at basketball, but has no IQ? If Donny calls The Nets and asks for that, they will hang up immediately. No sense at all.

as much as I want Howard

and I REALLY want HowardDallas would be better off simply clearing some of the more expensive deals(looking at you Marion and Haywood)and then simply going after Howard as a Free agent….

Not to mention the fact that IF you are trading for Howard, Orlando most likely will demand that you take either Hedo/Arenas or both…and trust me, you don’t want either of them….

Surprised you don't attack the reality that the trade would never happen

We’re way too over the cap to think of going after Howard when he’s a free agent. I don’t think we can trade those contracts, and I just don’t think Howard wants to play here. (Then again, he does want to play in LA with an aging Kobe)

If you could somehow get Howard for that cheap price listed, but have to take a talented, but costly and sometimes lazy player, I think there’s no question you would do it because if that kind of team built chemistry, there’s a great chance for another ring.

Tyson Chandler is great, but Dwight Howard is an absolute monster. He’s a reminder that there used to be great centers in this league that could score and be a defensive presence.

I agree with this
Tyson Chandler is great, but Dwight Howard is an absolute monster. He’s a reminder that there used to be great centers in this league that could score and be a defensive presence.

Howard would Definitely instantly Improve Dallas and give us a player that could consistently give us 20 pts, 10 rebs, and 2-4 blocks….Not only that but given the fact that he is also younger than Chandler would be a great player to transistion into the “post Dirk era” assuming that actually occurs that is….

The key thing that Howard need to think about is this…as a player that is entering his prime what team not only as the players that can help him win now, but also in the future…If you look at Dallas’s Roster and the players that are already here, Dallas becomes the obvious choice….

Obviously there is Dirk, who would free Dwight from double teams. But then you can factor in Roddy, Jones and Brewer, plus the two players that Dallas will be picking up this year in the draft, then factor in the fact that Kidd has already stated that he wants to continue playing for a few more years and is willing to take a bench role…

and as far as our "cap situation is concerned here is Dallas’ situation as it stands now:
Cap is set at ~53,000,000….
2011/12- ~61,000,000
2012/13 ~41,000,000
2013/2014~41,000,000
So if the cap stays where it is at, then Dallas will have ~12,000,000 in “cap room” in the two “key” years that Howard may become a FA
Now bear in mind that this does not include Chandler/Butler/Berea/Stevenson re-signs so that number may decrease
However Chandler and Butler may be the Key to trading for Howard….
Assuming that Chandler gets the max extension of (going off of what Camelo Anthony got from the Knicks) around 20 million per year that puts him as a prime piece to trade for Howard….Now we would have to include a young Player(Ian Mahinmi) plus multiple picks…..

the thing would be taking on either Arenas/Hedo’s contract. Hedo’s could be fairly easily absorbed(Terry will be a great asset here…)but Arenas would be a killer unless Cuban could convince him not to exercise his 2012/13 player option….

Sorry for the long reply, but Howard is my second Favorite player (after Dirk of course) is any chance that I might see them on the same team…why that is almost as good as this

My Thoughts...

I have been thinking about this a lot, and I can’t come up with many attractive scenarios that would work for Dallas.

As far as who to re-sign, I believe that we need to or should re-sign Chandler and Butler. I truly believe Barea is gone, and he really needs to be. I wouldn’t mind him in his current role, BUT somebody is going to pay him a decent amount of money. He should never be the starting PG for the Mavs and his niche is exactly what we saw in the playoffs, but we cannot pay him what somebody will offer him. That being said, we do need to find another PG and pretty quickly. Kidd isn’t going to last forever and after getting the ring, he may feel “mission accomplished”.

If Butler can come back and be what he is or was, we’ve already improved. We cannot expect Marion to be our 3 anymore…we need a real scoring threat from the 3. Butler can do that and has a defensive presence. Actually, I do want Stephenson back also.

If we do nothing, but bring back some of our guys at decent prices, we have a chance to be competitive again, but we can’t lose too many of them. This “TEAM” of individuals won this Championship…it can do it again, without focusing on the starters, bench rotation, or adding a superstar.

I don’t believe we can get Howard unless its through free agency, and that’s another year away. Chandler is a key to getting a player like Chris Paul, but our stable of role players are not going to be as good on another team as they were in this system. We don’t have the trade chips, to be honest…at least not in my opinion.

What we have if we bring back some of our guys who can make a difference at a lower pay-rate:

C: Chandler, Haywood (I would take that tandem in a heartbeat) (French dude can play back up C and PF if necessary, to provide Dirk with sit down time on the bench)
PF: Dirk, Cardinal (I like him defensively and he can hit a few shots, but there isn’t much more to him…this has to be addressed in the next couple of years)
SF: Butler, Marion
Guard Rotation/Mix n Match: Kidd, Terry, Stephenson, Roddy and Corey B

We still need a penetration PG to break down the defenses and some solid shooters running around or spotting up. Time to work Roddy and Corey in.

In this draft, I just want a solid shooter or solid, but not great “all the tools” kind of bench player. Not much else out there.

I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2008.

Is this a troll?

Let me summarize this: We’d get Dwight Howard for average to good NBA players and Deron Williams for role players, and then we’d sign Steve Nash as our back-up..

You do realize this isn’t NBA2k11 or whatever.

I Agree Howard and Williams are Great But Dallas’s cap can’t take getting two more all stars.

I would be happy with just Howard myself....

I know isn't it?

think of that starting 5-

SG-Wade
SF-Lebron
PF- Dirk
C- Howard
PG-…Jones?

ok maybe not the Fab 5…..I tried to get Chris Paul….but 60+ million in contracts without Butler or Chandler available for trading was too much…..

Thanks for the responses!

Sometimes being heard is about your own ideas and sometimes it’s about provoking thought. If you think dreams can come true, then there is a whisper of hope to finding a way to make any deal happen. Trades can be complex and ideas to make the hard ones happen comes from hope, that there is a possibility. If you find a possibility in the ideas posted then you are dreaming, and I like that. If the ideas posted here just get you to thinking about how could it be done, what could make it work, then I’ve done what I set out to do. If you disagree, and think dreaming is bad for the sport or the trade machine then you are welcome to your opinion, just like I’m welcome to mine. I believe hope and research are the keys for getting trades done, instead of negativism. Find-a-way, instead of that-won’t-work, attitudes! Allbeit, finding-a-way is hardly possible without identifying the roadblocks. Note: I really do like Howard and Williams and think they could be the core of multi-championship team and of course, I want Dallas to have that chance. So again, thank you! Keep dreaming and Go Mavs!
